- So, just how badly can I break Dr. Mario using the pill manipulation script? Let's find out.
Unlike either of the previous movies, this one starts at level 20, and just goes downhill from there.
Like last time, this movie is tool-assisted, and uses the lua script that lets me change the next pill to whatever I want. The goal is to use huge and complex combos to break the game as much as possible, to test the limits of the buffer overflow glitches. A secondary goal was to attain 9,999,999 points, which was accomplished after 6 levels.
Level 24 repeats itself infinitely when beaten. Also, the score wraps around to 9,000,000 after 9,999,999 is achieved. Also, I had to cut out about 30 seconds of freeze-time to get it under the 11-minute limit.

Whatever pill drop triggers the glitch also causes the whole column of germs to be nuked.

So I guess combos aren't supposed to be absolutely insane in Doctor Mario
Keep in mind that, for this video, I cut out some of the "freeze time" to make UA-cam's 11-minute limit.
Sometimes, when the game freezes, the score will go up in the middle of the freeze. The first freeze at 8:32 is unedited, see that for an example. (The second one is edited, though.)

No, it's tool-assisted.
To tell you the truth, I'm actually not that good at complex combos when playing in real time. I can't think in all those dimensions so fast, and half the time I screw something up by flipping a pill the wrong way or something.
But, I will say that just making this video taught me a heck of a lot about spotting opportunities for advanced combos...
Are you able to break what you see down in slower time? It’s so difficult lol but this is awesome.

Yeah, I know (I saw it a few other times; 6:20 was just the first time I noticed it.)
I still say you should submit it as-is, though.
And that is why I don't play against people who can set up combos that well. I'd just be destroyed if I was ever on the recieving end of these...

Ironically enough, I lock the game up just about every time I play. My biggest question to you is how were you able to "unfreeze" the game after a monster combo? I've tried everything which includes rubbing the controls and buttons as fast as I can as I was told sometimes this will unfreeze the game, but it hasn't worked so far. I've lost many really good games because of the lock up.
I clear the softlock by mashing buttons on player 2's controller. It may require L+R or U+D though.
@@Strakester Ah ok. I think that's what I've been doing wrong. I couldn't remember if I was supposed to mash the buttons on player 1 ctrlr or player 2 ctrlr. I was doing it with the player 1 ctrlr and nothing would happen. I'll have to test this theory and see if it works. Thanks!

So how does this script work exactly? Could this theoretically work on an actual nes?
This script works by directly changing the memory values of the colors on the next pill based on inputs to player 2's controller. It would only work on a real NES using a Game Genie, or if some arbitrary code execution exploit were discovered.

Could someone really play like this? As far as getting the combos i mean
You can do some good comboing on Low speed in real time, but this movie cheats to give itself perfect pill colors. Normally they're random and unable to be manipulated. So unless you get seriously lucky, it's not gonna happen.
The glitches are kinda the whole point of the video...
You should seriously just submit this to tasvideos as-is and see how it works out.

+EnragedSephiroth Um... beat Level 20 of Speed Hi and you will get an "ending" cutscene that shows the viruses being abducted by a UFO. Search for "Dr. Mario ending"
Strakester Yeah... I played this when I was like 7, couldn't beat it. Although I accidentally hit the NES and triggered that scene with the tree and the UFO. Been wondering what the heck it was ever since.

It really isn't that hard. Of course, you are better off waiting until about half the screen is cleared first. Then you have more time to think about it. But don't just make combos...make virus combos. Who cares how many pill combos you make. You can easily get 20+ virus combos with one pill.
