I'm always impressed when someone "discovers" Franzl Lang, an excellent alpine yodeller from Bavaria, Germany. He was born Dec 1930 and passed in Dec 2015. He truly set the pace and was THE most recognized yodeling expert. As a professional musician for +50 years, I followed Franzl'a music for many decades. I'm happy his music lives on and can bring joy and smiles to anyone who cares to listen to it. My favorite Franzl Lang tune is: "Wenn Ich Auf Hohen Bergen Steh" (When I On High Mountain Stand). He sings a duet with himself - one yodel part breaking low/high and the other high/low. ENJOY!
I've been listening to Franzl Lang since the mid 80's. Found an album in a box my German teacher in college had of German music. So many of his songs are very beautiful.
I was once in a taxi in Austria. You get chatting to the driver as you do. He was good enough at English to have a decent conversation with, we were there to snowboard. His main hobby was yodelling and he wasn't shy about it. Que the last of the taxi ride with our driver yodelling his head off. Always remember that.
Nah, I taught myself to yodel in 2018 in like 6 months. Its not that difficult, just like singing, you simply mustnt be afraid to sound off or bad. Just do it, learn and improve. This song right here is one of the most difficult yodels though - I still cant nail it perfectly.
I literally just watched this video and tried yodeling/singing for the first time. The best mistake of my life. My suitemate is a musician and producer, and now I'm getting taught how to sing better as well as making money from songs with him.

I’ve watched a lot of your videos to date and the *roar* at the end of the intro still gets me every time. Thank you for reacting to this, I always get confused looks when I claim that yodeling like that requires a lot of skill and technique. ‚That bushy thing‘ on top of the hat is a ‚Gamsbart‘ and made up of hair of a chamois (a goat-antelope from the Alps). It was part of the traditional garb of men from the alpine regions. What he’s wearing though is more like a Disney-field version of traditional clothing as Parton his act.
I agree that the strength and clarity of his head voice is maybe his most distinctive trait. Obviously his control is impeccable and perhaps unmatched but that searing falsetto is truly something else.
Beth, the way your eyes widen at 0:54, and all the subsequent expressions are priceless! That’s pretty much how I reacted when I discovered this man earlier today. 😃
Franz "Franzl" Lang (28 December 1930 - 6 December 2015), known as the Yodel King (German: Jodlerkönig), was an alpine yodeller from Bavaria, Germany. Lang also sang and played the guitar and the accordion and appeared in several German films. Lang's genre is German folk music; he typically sang in the Bavarian dialect of the rural Alpine regions.[1]
Beth, I have listened to this gentleman since I was a young boy. My father was stationed in Germany from 67-69. I have a vinyl album of his that I got from my dad when he passed away. Franzl is amazing.
I love yodel!! The joy it brought to your face is the true joy of the yodel. Every one smiles!! Its so bouncy and happy. Franz lang is the king of yodel!! I learned to yodel on my own by listening and practace. Any one can do it. But its vary hard to teach. As a little girl i asked my Oma to teach me and she said "no, you know how to yodel, all people do you just need to do it" I droped the idea until i was 20 and over one year of yodeling in the car on my commute i can yodel with ease! The most important things to remember is: 1) smile! 2) every ones yodel is different, the "brakes" in each peraons voice are at their own points of notes. So each persons yodel is unique! So much fun. I love to yodel!! My favorate yodel song is, " I like to yodel" by Sourdough slim
Wow! Those amazing melodic runs are the most musical yodel sound I’ve ever heard, and his absolutely virtuosic control is breathtaking. First yodel video I’ve ever watched and thought ‘wish I could do that!’
Sofia Shkidchenco, a teen from Ukraine, is mixing the fun and joy of yodeling with a variety of music genres. She is a gifted singer who is using her talents to help refugee children.
Hi Beth, as you were talking about the little "hatbrush" - its called "Gamsbart". Its made of chamois hair and weared in the alpine (bavarian & austrian) area as traditional object. It will be inherited within the family. They are handmade and depending on the hairlength of the single hairs of an Gamsbart, they can become really expensive. So such Gamsbard in the length of 20 cm (7.8 inches) can easily cost 10000 € or even more... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamsbart
Her reaction seeing him and his pitch was my reaction seeing someone yodeling this fast and controlled despite being German myself..... Man's The Greatest That Shall Ever Exist...
Utterly and absolutely AMAZZZZING!!!!......and alongside that tremendously silly hat.......this is both hysterical and priceless!....Everything music should be.....musical talent with a dose of levity that strips away the oft mundane and darker shades of life......to replace it with laughter and tears of joy.........that goofy hat!!!!......damn.....I can't stop laughing
For anyone who's curious the hat brush is called a gamsbart (literally translates into goats beard and yes is made from goat hair) and worn in a tyrolean (the hat he's wearing). Also thank you for this, as someone who grew up listening to this stuff it makes me happy to see new people exposed it my culture :)
Raised in Munich, Lang trained as a toolmaker. He started playing his trademark accordion at the age of nine. His greatest hit was his 1968 recording of Karl Ganzer's composition "Das Kufsteiner Lied". Throughout the 1970s, he was a permanent feature of musical variety shows on West German television, especially on the ZDF program Lustige Musikanten. Lang has sold more than 10 million recordings; he has earned 20 gold records and one platinum record within the German recording industry. On his 70th birthday, he performed for the final time.
Thanks to your Patreon member for get asking you to react to the incredible Franz List. King of the Yodellers Beth. I've seen a few of his videos. It would be great if you could react to Melanie Osesh of family band Oesch De Dritton singing their own song Yodel Time. While Franz may be King. I feel that Melanie is one of the best female Yodellers, if not the best that I have heard. She has one of the best tongue techniques I've seen. Franz uses a different technique. His technique is more open mouth. Uses his lips more.
you know i am somewhat of a bathroom singer myself. i wasn't really into yodeling, ever. but the first time i heard Franzl Lang, i was astonished by the incredible vocal range, speed, accuracy and consistency of his vocals. i'd say he must be possessed, this seems too good to be true. i also understand why lots of people think this must be funny. however, just like throat singing, try this yourself and see how insanely difficult joddeling is and then listen to what Franzl Lang manages to pull off (seemingly) effortlessly. so next time someone asks: who is the best singer to have ever lived? Franzl has got to be on that list, wether you like yodeling or not.
And the award for best diaphragm in history goes to... It’s hard enough doing octave jumps on wind instruments (I play piccolo). Franzl Lang makes it look like child’s play

When you come to think about this, " Schon ist auf der welt " where " Auf und auf voll lebenslust " was taken from in 1987 came pretty late in Franzl Lang's wonderful carreer ! He began in 1955 with the realease of a first EP with the record's label Philips for a try and put and end to his career forty years after in 1996 with the album " Aus Freud am lieben " ! He has a wonderful career, but I think it was the death of his beloved son in 1995 due to a blood's illness that made him stop everything. Even though his close friends like Carolin Rieder the famous tv host was like " hey Franzl ! You should really do a come back " but he was too ill...
Fun fact: If you spend some time, listening to yodeling, you might spot a difference between the german, swiss and austrian way of yodeling. Some say, that the german style is straight in your face, the swiss way is very melodic with the break and the austrian way is more legato and melodic with a "sweet note to the yodeling - licks". I suggest you listen to Austria: Margret Almer - Scheibenjodler, Swiss: Oesch die dritten, Reden ist silber and Germany: You already found the best - Franzl all the way :)
Franzl Lang will always be my ringtone. Your reaction to him is priceless. I don't know how I found him years ago, considering that I don't exactly just listen to yodelling. I never did before, that is. I can't figure out how he has room in his lungs for so much air. If I ever need to grin and smile for any reason, I go to Franzl.
Haha I really had a good laugh watching your reactions ;) I come from Tyrol and this is our traditional music more or less :D Sadly what we see is a playback performance.
There's a rumor that yodeling was a form of communication in the European Alps, like morse code, back when people didn't have telephones and couldn't see the smoke signs due to bad weather. I'm Austrian And no, it wasn't, although the idea is hilarious. XD It can be used to get avalanches going, though.
