- Good quality audio of a fine show.
Oct. 23, 1993. Pro-recorded radio broadcast. Prior recordings I'd heard of this same show aren't nearly as good quality as this recording.
Many thanks to mazzystar.free.fr Forum member "jamband" for kindly sharing a copy made from his Sangatte Records CD which is where this audio file comes from.
A CD was issued as part of a "20th Annniversary" collection of Black Sessions recordings/radio broadcasts by Sangatte Records. On the face of it, it appears to be an authorized release, however, according to discogs.com 's research (thanks go to mazzystar.free.fr Forum member dyerseve for the link for this at: www.discogs.com/label/65782-Sa... ), it's
a bootleg, not an authorized release. Anyway, the good news is the audio quality's much better than versions I'd heard before. That's the important thing.
Track Listing:
01 Mary Of Silence, starts at 0:20
02 Ghost Highway 8:45
03 She Hangs Brightly 12:25
04 Bells Ring 19:09
05 Halah 24:33
06 Blue Light 28:02
07 Ride It On 32:54
08 Into Dust 35:52
09 Give You My Lovin' 41:12
10 Blue Flower (Slapp Happy cover) 45:04
11 So Tonight That I Might See 48:51
12 Hair & Skin (Green on Red cover) 58:30
13 Rock Section (The Colours out of Time cover)* 1:02:39
* Rock Section is usually cited as a cover of the 1981 single by The Colours Out of Time, but there are reports another band, Skin Patrol, first played it as early as 1979 at the London club, The Bat Cave.

Her voice is so analog. No one bends a note so brilliantly.
This is one of those rare bands that actually sound better live. You can feel that magic, like they're all connected to each other as higher sentient beings...and Hope, she's such an amazing vocalist, her ephemeral voice will haunt you in a delicate and sweet way. This is natural talent at it's very best! -In my humble opinion.
very well said Sally, RIP dave robach 🌠
Rocky and Kimmy Phillips
I think at least 50 of the views are me
David Robach was Mazzy Star .. Hope is always the best choice
Yes it certainly is a mesmerizing voice that you have to hear over and over again. It's like, "Wait a minute, what I just heard was it real.??
@@dankreiling2913and the rest are probably mines. God bless & God jesus what voice! Sweet Mary of silence.
RIP David Roback
What a pity, I just got the bad news, my heart is broken :(
No one can hold a candle to Hope's angelic voice. This is hauntingly beautiful music
I don't have a particular affinity for Mazzy Star and I didn't even know they existed back in the 90's when I was a teenager, really all I knew of them came years later when I heard Fade Into You for the first time. But I have a great appreciation for good music and good musicianship, so one evening while letting UA-cam just play random music in the background and this live performance began to play, it immediately got my attention. I''m no stranger to hearing bands perform live and I say this with absolute sincerity., this just might be my all time favorite live performances by any band. It's excellent from the first note to the last and doesn't have a weak point at any point in between and each song just flows perfectly into the next as if each song is one part of a larger overall musical journey.
I've discovered Mazzy Star at76' in 2023!!! What a good surprise for me... Absolutely excellent... The leader is dead... Sad... From France.
Hope's voice is hypnotic and soothing
Mazzy Star and Hope Sandoval escaped my notice in the 90's, but it's such a pleasure now to discover this amazing psychedelic/ Doors/Lou Reed/Velvet Underground/dreampop/shoegaze/ sound. Not only is Hope's voice PERFECT in all ways but the musicians behind her are absolutely Top Notch, and this audio is excellent. Thank you very much for this upload. I will be back often to trip on this. .
and the Cowboy Junkies.
Sadly we didn't have youtube back then so missed a lot of good music.
@@MrMikadelicYes!
Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval, and Black Sessions recordings are a 21-century master class.
when we listen to it, we are literally and figuratively transported elsewhere.
I like...
Hope Sandoval literally brings hope back into my world. Mazzy Star is real. Precious.
God How I Love Her Voice ❕✌😴
ah! les Black Sessions de Bernard Lenoir sur Inter .. me faisaient des nuits plus belles que le jour! ça manque!
The QUALITY IS INSANE!! Great gig awesome selection of songs.
Devastating
that's cause it's a Black Session, a radio show, rather than a regular concert
Good not great sound quality in the instruments. Her VOICE is great!
My Name is Herman and I Know that
My GOD Is IN CONTROL. HE KNOW S WHAT HE DOING. HE MAKES NO. MISTAKES
love this band and Im old.....
me too - to both parts
This is brilliance.
Thanks to everyone all along the signal path for making it possible here.
Hope it stays up for a while -- and that the artists get a piece of it; it's only right.
smartalek180 When I upped the recording, yt's computers scanned it & immediately ascertained who copyright holders are. Any ads appearing are all beyond my control, & the ad revenue goes, not to me, but to the copyright holders, which should include the artists/writers which, as you say, is only right! Although, it always seems to be intermediary companies that are named by yt as copyright holders. Presumably, those must be ensuring the performers & writers, Roback & Sandoval, receive their royalties.
@@Bobjb999 Said perfectly :)
It's nice to read there are still people discovering Mazzy Star only now - thanks to internet, youtube ...
I have been listening to their music from the mid-90s, I discovered Hope from MTV "sometimes always" with jesus and mary chain. Back then it was really difficult to find information about a total underground band believe me.... I was the only fan of Mazzy Star, none of my friends had ever heard of them😅.... I have shared tapes back then... And my mom asked me for a tape when I left home.....
It made me quite desperate back then that they were not known at all (at least not in Germany), I mean I cannot even say "totally underrated", I 'd rather say totally unknown.... So better late than never - I am glad they finally get the attention they deserve.
The killer awoke before dawn,
He put his boots on...
Excellent comparison
Back here again....it's Hope's voice and Roback's psychedelia that lures me here. Ty Mazzy Star :):)
The provider of this music is an instrument of Deity. Hope is like the voice in my head...
Love it ! Shes female Jim Morrison !
this is really great music indeed (: !
What a complete Angel, Hope is!
Mazzy star is amazing its just bad that I'm finding out about them now 😔
The vocals and the sounds. Coming out of the band. Are next to unbelievable! The sound is so f____n GREAT! Gosh, makes me a fan like right away.
I'm absolutely loving this
Farewell David Roback. Hope now carries on without you...
EXCELLENT .
Wenn ich diese Songs höre, fühle ich mich in meine Studentenzeit vor nunmehr 50 Jahren zurückversetzt. Starke Frau mit einer Wahnsinnsstimme. Klasse, an Velvert Underground and Nico erinnernde Mucke!
Dude, you're awesome for this.
*THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE*
Merci, merciful Mary of silence...
Miss you DR.
this is fucking awesome
I really love this performance.
Thanks for uploading this gem - so great to have!
Beautiful stoned song...
I really love her shy approach to the mic. Looking down with the occasional eyes looking up at the audience. It makes her so adorable & hypnotic with her haunting voice. As a front woman no one can accuse her of stalking the stage but somehow she OWNS it regardless. Love her & she’s my age!🥰
really awesome to stumble upon a good quality recording of this - thanks so much for posting
Thanks for posting this, definitely much better sound quality then others posted of this performance. Awesome!
Amazing! Played this so many times and still amazing! Thanks.
this is excellent. thanks for sharing .
Thank you for this gem!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing this....fantastic.
that last song at 1:02:40....woooweee. Amazing stuff by an already amazing band. You can't go deeper than this.
OMGosh - - - Perfect ... ! ^n that's perfect raised to a very large number
Incredible stuff. The Doors influence is strong for sure but there are shades of country as well in places. I don't think much came out in the nineties that matches the quality of this band in that period. Hope's voice is to die for and working with her band mates they really put you in the zone. Very few bands do that for me in the way Mazzy Star do.
Failure is a band that I would put up there with mazzy star.
@@hazeleyes8178 Thanks Erica. I will investigate them immediately.
I've always loved Mazzy Star
Thank u!! Loved it!
Incredible recording. This is a gorgeous band
Esperanza, Amor, Libertad y Paz .. Hope Love Freedom and Peace
Une Perle . Merci de tout Coeur
Ahhh the memories.. this is as sweet as it gets.. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
There has always been this intrigue about Hope because she was so mysterious, young, aloof, brilliant and unique.
Doors sound with Hope instead of Jim Morrison...
This song makes you feel like being together and working the sweet ranch.
They were awesome in Ventura this year (2018). No drop off IMO, which is amazing. Voice of an angel still, and David was on point. Not sure who the other guitarist was, but he was a definite highlight of the show. Mazzy Star in an intimate venue: bucket list item checked off for sure.
Did they play Hair and Skin?
@@marcosr666 No. In fact, I had never heard that song until hearing it on this recording. Great cover though. Radically different (musically and “feel” wise) than any of MS’s original songs, IMO.
Beutiful. I can see Julliet Lewis on stage. Strange days.
I really enjoyed listening to this. Lots of influences, like the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, Patty Smith... but Mazzy Star brings their own game to the table and it's all Aces.
Beautiful critique
@Hytham Hammer Doors surely
Dont forget the other obvious influence the Doors. Clear as a bell with the keyboards
Nicely stated man! 😎 👌
I hear an echo of the Cowboy Junkies.
I love her !!!!!
gracias, buena artista
How not to be a star and be a godness. How to be dark and not pretend anything ugly.
Amazing!!
whoua ! je decouvre ce groupe, gros fan des wharlocks et du BJM, je pouvais pas rêver mieux !
I wonder if Ray Manzerek ever heard this album. We should play it for Krieger and Densmore and see what they think
This is good stuff, Maynard...
ride it on baby!!
23:23 cocteau twins w/ mazzy?!?! Hoooolllyyy shit! If I only had a time machine!
Mazzy Star in Paris like a Trip without Drugs, i like it , Hope Sandoval why you are older now 🥲 incredible nice psychedelic Rock with a very special Lady😘 .She s Like the Sister from Jimmy. this music i like in my car 🚙for long trips or if i work in my office to kill the hours
NICE SOUND QUALITY
Great show, great quality and the final track 'Rock Section' is a stoner monster of a track
Man, these early tracks are good! Some of them sound like the Doors !
This is just a beautiful recording. Would love to have seen the live video too.
et merci bernard lenoir
EU pensava que tinha imagem! De qualquer maneira dei um gosto e ouvi!
I thought it had image also anyway I gave a thumbs up and listened to it!

Dreamy ..
Lucky enough to own this. One of my favorite cds
So there is a cd of the Black Session? It must be hard to find because I haven seen it
@@dankreiling2913 It is very difficult to find but it does exist.
If CD is impossible then Vinyl would be a gift from the 90s gods!
@@1607trojan I agree.
@@jk-nl3jsI would love to have a copy of this can you possibly share a way to get it
Genial
fab
The"Door" vibe 😍
Angel of Hope.
C'est bizarre que les Francais esteme les meilleurs groupes Americain en avant qu'ils sont apprecies aux Etats-Unis-- Pixies et Mazzy Star, especiallement. Francais n'est pas ma premier langue, evidement, but I love all the French fans of Pixies and Mazzy Star and good American music that Americans don't get till like 10 years later. Sorry for my bad French w/o accents...
all my favourite people, Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine), Will Heggie (bass), Elizabeth Fraser (vocals) Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil and David Roback, Hope Sandoval and Kendra Smith of Mazzy Star/Opal all in one venue at the same time .. that would be bliss
This session and the 2012 Hope in Spain recording are the only recordings that are uninterrupted. Allows for theta waves to set in at night. I miss CD's.
I think here's 1st time I've ever witnessed an admission of sum1 longing for that ancient old medium that is the “compact disc”. I still own abt 2K cd's, & haven't yet felt any yearning 4 em ... Yet. Although, I do miss cassettes & vinyl.
Hope Sandoval was the embodiment of an old soul, way back in 1990 somethin.
@@NazPhura2why wouldn't you miss CDs when they aren't compressed like this recording?
The music reminds me so much of The Doors, far more psychedelic rock than grunge as a genre. And probably the reason why it went largely unnoticed in the early 1990s. Its exceptional....
Fabulous stuff. Echos of early Velvet Underground but with better musical competence.
Hope and her voice really kinda break my heart
The back ground makes me think of the doors...
It's too bad they never covered The End (Doors) They would have been awesome on that!
she did however do a cover of another Doors song, 'Indian Summer' live once or twice!
My latest project at fan site mazzystar.free.fr is I've collected & posted text from 25 vintage Mazzy Star articles/interviews from 1990 to 1997, here:

Hello Hermesacat,
I do really appreciate your enthusiasm and contribution to Mazzy Star and similar side-projects.
I am a Mazzy Star and Hope Sandoval fan for many many years owning the complete discography.
Nevertheless, I was not able so far to obtain a copy of this awesome CD.
At the moment, since it is about an unofficial release, Discogs does not permit sellers to list copies for sale and either on Ebay or MusicStack there is no copy for sale.
Have you any idea where to get a copy?
Thank you very much in advance for your assistance!
Kind regards,
Apostolos
I don't know about the CD. I don't own the CD myself. I just have an audio file in lossless FLAC format (CD quality) ripped from someone else's CD. You can download the audio file from a file hosting site where I upped it, here: drive.google.com/file/d/1igMsjDMVHZBZdnN-ARXtGIdI5MB9D-P_/view?usp=sharing
Thank you soi much!
