  • BOOM: China has launched the first batch of broadband satellites, challenging Starlink, as it begins constructing a low Earth orbit (LEO) mega-constellation of 14,000 satellites. LAUNCH at 0644 UTC of CZ-6A from Taiyuan with 18 Qianfan Xingzuo communications satellites. The satellites are similar to the V1 Starlinks, with flat-panel morphology and a mass of 300 kg each. This 'G60' constellation is planned to eventually have 14000 satellites.
Liftoff at 06:44UTC on August 06, Long March 6A launched the first group of 18 G60 satellites from Taiyuan. This is China's first launch of LEO mega constellation. 6 G60 launches planned for the year.

A total of 648 satellites by the end of 2025 to provide regional coverage. 1296 sats to provide global coverage by 2027. The final constellation will be formed by ~14,000 sats. #chinaspace #longmarch6A

With the Long March 6A, it would require 36 launches to meet the 2025 goal.
That's really slow-going and very expensive.
China needs a SpaceX style reusable vehicle with a much larger lift capability to make this project feasible within a shorter schedule.

Which is what at least 5 private companies are doing right now

That's assuming all of them will be launched by LM6A. They may use other rockets with larger payload capacity.

Not just Starlink, they might challenge oneweb, project kuiper and at least one other Chinese satellite internet constellation project. Nice work there, POV. Prompt and informative.
