As a Portuguese-speaking person, the drunk Russian speaking Spanish trope actually made you say it more accurately than before hahaha
Surprisingly russian and portugese languages sound pretty similar to those who speak one of those languages. It's like you hear something in the distance and you guess it's your language but you can't hear the separate words

Man finally I see some people mentioning this. I once sat in an airplane to Lissabon and when the security announcement came I genuinely thought they were speaking Russian. It sounds so similar. Although, every time I mention this to a Portuguese or Russian speaking person, they laugh their asses off.

I notice it every time I see a Brazilian trying to speak with a Portuguese accent, they seem like a slavic person that happens to know some words in portuguese.
The languages are completely different but i can see that can sound pretty similar.
it has happened to me several times to hear someone talking, oh it's portuguese, only to find out a second later that i couldn't understand a single word.
Portuguese language stereotype is based on the accent of about 5% of the speakers. Great.

I’ve come across at least two books that says the people who were banished to the island of São Tomé (or Saint Thomas as the literature at times calls it) are some of the REAL j e w s that were chased / sent / exiled by the Caucasian Portuguese who were forcing them to denounced their beliefs and convert to Christianity
Definitely a country with a special place in my heart! I've been to São Tomé in 2018, without a doubt my favorite country on earth, much love from Portugal "Leve Leve" 🇸🇹

Quick introduction to the Portuguese R:
If it starts a word or if there are two RR together, then it sounds like the French R
(e.g Roçais and Forró have the same sound)
If it is by itself in the middle of a word, then it sounds like the Spanish R
Foro (forum) ≠ forró (race)
And if it finishes a word then it sounds like the American English R
(most verb endings)
Of course, it varies greatly with different accents, but that's a quick and generic overview

Worth noting that in Brazil it sounds different, still French r but much closer to just h
For English speakers, treat RR as an h. This is Brazilian but is basically the main accent

I was fortunate enough to visit STP last year, as the last country in my quest to visit all counties with an "&" in their name.
First things first: the people are some of the friendliest I've ever met. Everyone smiles and I felt very safe, day and night.
I loved the food. These people know how to grill a fish!
I don't speak Portuguese, but my Spanish is bad enough that it can pass as Portuguese, so I got by with Spanish and French.
The nature and landscapes are stunning. It is definitely a place I'd like to return to.

About the relationship between STP and Portugal, one of the reasons it is so close is because, although there was an independence movement, it operated in Gabon, and there was never a serious armed conflict.
And it is true that Portugal sends a lot of expertise to São Tomé, not only military. If I can recall, my Geography teacher told us that her husband, who worked on the Merchant Navy, was sent there to instruct and help them develop their own shipping activity. And we in Portugal also love São Tomé - it’s like Cabo Verde, but Tropical.

Before my family moved back to America, when I lived in Taiwan I attended the same school as the Daughters of the Ambassador of São Tomé and Principe. I didn’t realize this until 2 years after we moved to America and I became a Geography/History Nerd.

Got discovered by the Portuguese (but they didn't stay so the French took over), volcanic, a lot of mixed ancestry people, microclimates and so on and on. But Réunion decided to stay French (no independence movement). While kinda "comfortable" (the island is well developed), it's also very unknown.

Seaker It has to do with the change in the show format. Back in the Brazil episode, there were no guests or cohosts, meaning it went by faster, as well as new segments being added like the animal segment and the music segment.
Plus, I think there are stated plans to go back and redo early episodes once they finish up the Original list.... Personally I think the need to Republic of China before the renovations, but that's just me.

Sao Tome is one of the countries that had diplomatic relations with Taiwan, received years of financial, technological, agricultural, and medical aids from Taiwan, but was bribed away by China with a single stroke of a pen. Nothing against the people, but the government is despicable.
The same bs happened to my country Dominican Republic, the corrupt only see their own gains, not the improvement of the people they are meant to serve, the government abandon a fellow democracy for a totalitarian regime known for their disdain for even the most basic human rights, being pathological liers, having a big propaganda machine to nearly the point of brainwashing and undermining every country they touch overtime with their debt traps, all just for money 😔😔😔.
Such a lovely video about Sao Tome, and you focus on a 5 second excerpt about their relations with Taiwan. China essentially did the same thing as Taiwan, paying for support through investments. Except China is much wealthier so it can offer more.

Olá, sou de São Tomé & Príncipe e gostei do vídeo...
Just some feedback: Keith has to do a better job of pretending to know what he's saying, instead of lazily reading his script with his eyes fixated nowhere near the audience. He sometimes sound uninterested which also makes me uninterested in what he's saying. Barb and Noah for me are the best presenters. Clear in what they're saying with excellent rapport with the audience.
I agree, that whole "not giving a fuck" attitude is not that funny. I still like Keith, but the best episodes for me are the ones where there's only one native guest in the episode, which have a bit more serious tone, like Russia was.
I agree. He seemed more passionate about this at the beginning, and more genuine also. I think your feedback is important for the series.
