  • In todays video I am prepping some ground for laying plastic mulch on raised beds for our vegetables by spreading some fertilizer and getting it disked in. I also get some more sweet corn planted. Was hoping to get some plastic laid before the rain.

U have a great channel. Thx for the videos.
For the areas that u r putting mulch on, do u find any issues fertilizing the entire field insted of just down the row u will b planting. Its something ive been reseaeching for my own future farm. It just seems so inefficient since your adding fertilizer to many areas that wont get crop. Any thoughts on this or tools u have seen to only apply the area thats gwtting mulch?

Thanks Eric! So it may look like I’m wasting fertilizer by broadcasting it, but when I lay the beds, the bed shaper/mulch layer is pulling all that dirt and fertilizer into the bed itself. The dirt in the walkways between the rows that is getting left behind is only about one foot wide. However, the layer does have an optional fertilizer attachment that can put the fertilizer right in the center of the bed underneath the plastic, I just have never purchased it mainly because of the amount of times I would have to stop and fill it. The capacity is only a few hundred lbs and I’m broadcasting about 3,000-5000 lbs. Hope that makes sense. Some years we will have one ton of composted chicken liter broadcast per acre on the field instead and obviously then that is our only option. Just let me know if you have any other questions.

@@wishwellfarms I never thought about how much soil the unit pulls from the areas between the rows. Makes perfect sense.
I'm guessing it doesn't get mixed in too deep when u run the disk over after u spread.

@@suave47 even if it is disked in pretty deep, the mulch layer gets it all because it shapes the bed from as deep as the soil is disked...at least 5-6 inches, otherwise there won't be enough soil to fill the bed and bury the edges of plastic.

One acre of what? Each vegetable crop we plant yields differently.
