"Anchors Aweigh" is the fight song of the United States Naval Academy and march song of the United States Navy. It was composed in 1906 by Charles A. Zimmermann with lyrics by Alfred Hart Miles. When he composed "Anchors Aweigh," Zimmermann was a lieutenant and had been bandmaster of the United States Naval Academy Band since 1887. Miles was Midshipman First Class at the Academy, in the class of 1907, and had asked Zimmermann to assist him in composing a song for that class, to be used as a football march. Another Academy Midshipman, Royal Lovell (class of 1926), later wrote what would be adopted into the song as its third verse.

this is a late question but what makes the navy the "only Constitutional Branch of the armed forces"?

Si Wi in article one of the constitution one of the enumerated powers of congress is to provide and maintain a navy. The constitution grants the government the ability to have standing armed forces but the navy is the only branch specifically required by constitutional law to exist.

@@andrewboaz1098 as the Army was already in existence and was not abolished, I find this reasoning laughable.

Congress has the power to RAISE and SUPPORT armies for a term.
But PROVIDE and MAINTAIN a navy.

Jesus that is a great song! Go Navy!!! Thanks Bulba Blin .... whatever on the quality - someone is just being cheeky .... should we say something about the Brits and the RAF and the time the Local Defense Volunteers went to the wrong island? All good - I wish the best for us all during this time.

This is the "Anchors Aweigh" that I learned. The "current" version was written by MCPON Hagen back in the mid 1990's. Hagen's version was based on a version written during World War II -- "Stand Navy Out to Sea, Fight Our Battle Cry" or something like that, The Navy has the best service song precisely because it was originally written as a Football Fight Song.

A little annotation the four chimney cruiser in the pic- clip appears not American to me, it is more likly a German larger cruiser like Yorck Scharnhorst or Gneisenau.
I would tend to Scharnhorst or Gneisenau, because of tropic painting in white and ocre.

If I’m not mistaken, the cruiser is actually the USS St. Louis. Definitely a part of the US navy at that time.

@@randomguy601 Your are absolutely right my apologies, did not take notice of the slim foremast .
The Scharnhort has had a much broader one.
