- Punk in Belfast 1978. Broadcast on Monday March 6th 1978, the show was called "Review" and this edition was known as "It Makes You Want To Spit" It was to feature Rudi and Stiff little fiingers. But due to some behind the scenes dirty deals it ended up with SLF, Victim, Pretty Boy Floyd and The Gems. This is not a broadcast version of the show, I had a friend who worked at Ulster TV and The tape was acquired from there 30 years ago on a studio grade VHS tape.

Amongst the troubles punk rock turns up and disinchanted working class kids from both sides of ulster came together. Punk was and still is one of the greatest forms of protest musical genres.
Not just working class. Punk scene was full of middle class and upper-class. Outcasts come to mind form the malone road! Not that it matters that's what punks about
Punk in Belfast in 70s and 80s broke down the religious and political divides and give the youth a shared identity and friendships , many of which survive to today .
Thanks for watching and commenting Terry. I hope you managed to see many of the bands in and around Belfast at that time.
The second wave of punk was more real with more anger and energy. The likes of Stiff little fingers the Ruts etc moved punk onto a new level a more reflective form of punk. The generation that grew up to this new wave of punk were true punks they embroidered the spirit of punk. Look at the music scene and the charts in general and how we another punk revolution now.

THE TINOPENERS from Co Antrim playing a C/W bar in was it Bundoran in Co Donegal in 1978 and giving as good as they got there-thats punk rock and what a great band they were.
Great footage. Punk as it should be, way before mohican hair cuts and tartan trousers ruined it all.
So true. If the story of punk in ulster was remade for a movie, it would be all mohawks etc, to fit in with the stereotype. Thanks for watching and commenting.
