The way they protected the child actor from the "venom" during the filming gives me soo much respect for the filmmakers. Thank you for letting him enjoy his childhood.

I am addicted to this film. It is brilliant. Essie Davis was superb along with the rest of the cast. Jennifer Kent is a genius. This film has to be a cult classic by now.

This is one of the most beautiful and most intelligent film and scenario written in a very very long time (and I am over 40).
The symbolic is absolutely amazing and so well directed . I must admit i prefer the short film (monsters ) maybe because of the B&W mood and the doll (because if the kid made the doll himself then he might have as well created his own monster) which i liked better than the book.
We all have our babadooks our dolls , we all have a past and demons and if we let the past and those demons in, then they invades us control us and can force us to commit horrible things and eventually even take our own life.
I really liked the end . Though she thought the kid was the problem and she even liked her sister and friends over her kid, a kid who never stopped loving her, she finally realizes that the shallow relationship with her friends and their lame life and even with her own sister are nothing compared to the love of her child. I am also sure that the lovely neighbour symbolizes the mother , because eventually your mother and your kid's love is the purest, realest and most unconditional and irrevocable love one can experience . That is why they are the only two constantly repeating to the mother that they will always lover her no matter what .
But you can never really get rid of the babadook because you can never really get rid of the past. And the cellar is also a metaphor for this past and for a part of her brain where she can lock up and keep the past and demons. The only way to get rid of one's past is to commit suicide but she chooses life , and she will feed her demons worms because she can't kill them but she can learn to live with them as long as she controls them and not let them control her, she still feeds the monster but she feeds it with worms . Meanwhile she is back to life, she doesn't need shallow useless friends and family relations , she will do well at work , find a better school for her son and things will progressively get better .
Now as a veterinarian i was horrified when she killed her dog , because if there is one other form of pure and true love it is the love of one's pet, but they are also sadly the weakest ones and the ones who always pay the bill first.
I think that this film resonates a lot with the single mothers or single parent(s) in general , because hell knows this is one of the hardest situation a woman or a man can face , especially when there is not much money in the bank . That is why i liked the washing up scenes so much . She could escape her demons by destracting herself with TV or trying to socialize and get out of the house, but she is alone at the sink washing her shit and trying to get rid of all the filth (both metaphorically and concretely) then she can't escape the past and escape the present . This is even more explicit in the original short film "monsters" when we see her doing the washing up but filmed from the outside of the house with the barres on the window, making her look like a prisoner . This scene was beautiful, just like the allusion to Repulsion by Polansky with the lamp hanging from the ceiling and the mother going insane , and other references to other great films.
There are so many more symbols and metaphors in this masterpiece just like the obvious daytime nighttime light and darkness contrast, combined with the birthday deathday of the child and husband, but i can't write forever .
I absolutely adore this movie and Monsters , i think both are sublime and exquisitely well written , directed and performed.
Now if i could meet Jennifer Kent i would love to ask her why does the mother pulls out her tooth right after murdering the dog, what is the symbolic behind it .
I do understand the symbolic of both mother and child grinding their teeth but pulling it out right after the mother , i don't get it and i feel stupid about it .

e1n2 a1n2 I think it's supposed to represent how those feelings of resentment, rage, and grief were still bound to the mother's subconscious. She could never fully do away with the emotions that the babadook embodied, but for the good of her relationship with her son and her own happiness, she was left no other option but to use all her inner strength to rein it in and keep it it under wraps. It basically shows that you can move on even if you can't get rid of all that pain completely, I guess!
"You can't get rid of the Babadook."

    • @enan-vr2pv
      @enan-vr2pv 9 років тому +2

thanks but i still think its wrong keeping a demon inside the house. and you can get rid of the babadook by believing in our Lord Jesus Christ . :)

e1n2 a1n2 It's not a demon. It's her depression that she wants to rid but can't. The worms represent the medication she takes to alleviate the depression.
Believing in the guy (Jesus) that would be the one responsible for the death of the father doesn't seem like the best option. Especially since it's the same guy that creates us as sinners then commands us to change. The same person who will torture you eternally just for not believing in him (belief isn't a choice - you can't choose to believe anything if it's sincere belief).
Jesus also created demons. And saying "I think it's wrong..." is judging the characters, Jesus told you not to judge.
Thank goodness the movie as well as your God are fictitious.

i will only say this. The Lord created us as immortal Human beings. He gave us Free will but He ordered us not to eat from that tree. its our own fault we die but the soul never dies.and The Lord doesnt send you to hell . you choose to go there..The Lord doesnt need you or me or anyone else. its your responsibility to accept Him and be His humble servant. He doesnt place heavier burdens than we can carry .if you care to listen to a few more words . check Christian Orthodox Saints. on youtube . youll find a lot of important Information. and if you swear on His Name dont .because why do you swear on something that according to you doesnt exist. if you say that He doesnt exist then you must have all the answers of the World. how can someone WHO was born only a few years ago can say that 2000 years of history doesnt exist .i now you must be angry by now because anger and hate is an atheist. and Love and Humbility is a Christian . i will say no more because i know your not willing to listen . you choose to go downhill because its a fast and easy way and because almost everyone else does it. you are a coward because you think you go with the majority but whoever follows The Lord is with the majority.you choose to go to hell. The Lord wants you to go with Him . every Human life is as important as the whole World.
