Excellent tutorial on planting berry trees! Shalom
Thank you. I’ll have a few other videos up on growing blueberry cuttings over the winter starting a small orchard.
I LOVE your slogan. I use to teach art and it was my classroom slogan. Think outside of the box and make it work to make it happen!
You my friend get it! Growing Out The Box is all about trying things or looking at things slightly different. Not being afraid of being 1st because you might be wrong. The lesson is in the experience. We learn even from wrong answers often by process of elimination. That’s how we grow…. My life is built on roads less traveled. 🙏🏽
"Can't emphasize enough "Bruh" ..the presentation..also the step by step narration..makes for a great "tutorial"..on the care..and upkeep.. of the blueberry bush"..learned many things"!!

INCREDIBLE work my brother! No one can doubt you because the proof is all around you. Thanks for sharing and stay blessed fam!

Yes Sir…. All this growth is from the end of May. All of my blueberry plants fill out this way. It’s the soil mix with spraying them with whey. Whey is also why I never have powdery mildew. You can use it on everything.
I found this very interesting! Just stumbled across you!!! Im in western Washington so the cottonmeal, late spring application? And im curious about the whey. Is it the supplement we take? Thanks!@@growingoutthebox
@@lindamurns1245 cotton seed early spring and late summer. Whey is the protein that you mentioned but I make it from milk. The whey separates from the curds when you seal milk in a jar and place in a warm location. Strain and mix 50/50 with distilled water. It creates a barrier against fungal infections and feeds. Spray it before your squash gets powdery mildew weekly and you will have no issues.
@@growingoutthebox thanks so much!!!!!!! I'm definitely trying both. Have a wonderful day 😊

First time seeing your channel and instantly subscribed after this video. You’re living the blueberry dream my man! I’m in Utah zone 7a and everyone says it’s very difficult to grow them over here, but i’m determined to make it happen. I for sure will pick up some pine bark nugz. I’m assuming they help with the acidity. Thanks for this awesome video.
Let's be the 1st to have those beautiful blueberries and of course, "bragging rights" lol. Mini pine bark nuggets has a pH in the 4.0 range and yes, this will give your blueberries a very acidic mix along with the peat moss and compost. You also want a wide planter. Not to concerned about depth and at least 2 gallons of water a week until frost.
You have a great setup and your plants are looking great.
I really appreciate that. A bit of cold weather is headed our direction so I will be harvesting and crossing fingers .

Blueberries are one of the super foods. One of my favorite plants in the garden. Thanks for commenting.
I like how you said it even makes you squeamish to cut the bottom, but that’s what you Gotta do and it makes the plant happy because it gets to grow instead of choking itself to death

Hey Mike. Thanks brother. I appreciate you stopping in.
Thank you for this tutorial. I have a couple of bushes to plant this weekend. I have a few questions if you don’t mind. 1) What size bags of peat moss and nuggets are you using? 2) I have a 36” round planter, is that large enough? And 3) when do you add the berry tone, when the berries first begin to form?
My kinda gardener. "Blueberries" lol.... The easiest way would be to use a 5 gallon bucket for measurements. 1. For every 2 buckets of peat is 1 bucket of the mini pine bark nuggets and 1 bucket of compost. 2. As far as planters are concerned you should be ok with the 36". I make the 48" planters because I am thinking of the plant at full maturity. I have southern High bushes for the most part and at full maturity they should be 4 to 6 ft tall and about 4 ft wide. With the 48" planters I can conveniently cover them for frost protection when they bloom early and we have a late frost. You will lose your first harvest on my early bloomers if you don't protect the early bloomers. On the mid and late bloomers it won't matter as much. So you need to be aware of when they will bloom. 3. If you have new plants this late in the season I would not fertilize. I use cottonseed meal mid September for the last feeding so they don't put on new growth in winter which could destroy the plant. Soil acidifier is really not necessary until Spring of next year and it is strictly for maintenance because the mix you just put together will be perfect for them. You will see growth like crazy! .... Here's the hard part.... DON'T ALLOW THEM TO FLOWER THE FIRST YEAR. lol.... Anything else I can help with please don't hesitate to ask. It keep the info fresh in my head when I type it out, so I don't mind.
Post some before and after. I would love to see. I will even post it on my community page.
@@growingoutthebox Will do and thank you so much!!!
Ok I'm gonna have to get me that variety I get pink lemonade and tff and one other variety
It’s not the soil acidifier if that’s what you are thinking. It’s the grow medium. The soil acidifier helps maintain the low pH. Save yourself a lot of headaches by using the mix. It makes growing blueberries far more enjoyable and rewarding when you see how they respond.
What grow zone are you in? I’m in Georgia zone 8a and the Sweetheart is my favorite.

We planted blueberries for the first time this year and they don't look as lush as yours. As someone who knows almost nothing about blueberry plants or soil amendments I'd like to hear your thoughts on this...I've heard that bark or wood chips in soil can suck up nitrogen, so is that why you add cottonseed meal to replace it....or is it not an issue for you? Hopefully I'll follow your lead and have lovely plants next year.
Good day and thanks for the questions. Wood chips should not be mixed into the soil as you have heard, doing so will tie up nitrogen. Mini pine bark nuggets on the other hand, for acid loving plants acts to keep the pH low in the soil. Pine bark nuggets have a pH around 4.0 …. Blueberries require a soil pH of 4.5 to 5.5 in order to properly uptake nutrients and thrive properly. Most native soil is closer to a 7.0 which is neutral and where most plants will do well. Not so for blueberries and is why using planters is a better idea in my opinion. You need a wide planter because their roots are closer to the surface and spread rather than dive deep.
Follow the tips in this video and I would be willing to bet that you will see a noticeable difference for the good.

I had very few of the Japanese Beetles last year for the 1st time. I used this WHEY on lots of my plants but I was so focussed on keeping the Dear out the garden and not paying attention as I should have. @@growingouttheboxwow, thanks bro 😎
We have little brown bugs that eat our blue berry buses end of summer. Sprayed but they still eat them. Anything else can be done do you know
Thank you in advance
What I can tell you is that I spray WHEY on my plants and I don't have insect issues.👍🏽 Click the notification bell.
Just a suggestion. You may want to consider spraying with Whey everyday during the season that those bugs strike. See if that helps.
@@pcburke2 I always say prevention is the best practice 👍🏽
when you grew your navy beans did some of them leaves start out yellow and slowly turned green?
Not during the summer. This time of year yes.
I was wondering if I could still plant some BBs. Where do you get your whey? Have you ever used diluted milk for the same job? cheers!
I’m in Georgia zone 8a and we still have a few weeks to plant blueberries. The whey is very easy to make. Just take a clean glass jar, fill it with milk, seal it and place it in a warm place until the curds separate from the whey. Strain and use as needed. Mix 50/50 distilled water and whey.
@@growingoutthebox Awesome! Thank you so much. I'm right down the road in FL, Zone 8b, so should have a little time to get them in the ground. Cheers!
@@KarlKarsnark Sweetheart, Hello Darlin are good choices for your grow zone. I would love your to see your progress. You should post as you start planting.

@@growingoutthebox Thanks so much. I need to deplant my blueberries. Our area has an outbreak of a very invasive weed and its choking everything.
Can’t understand what u said. Can u share the link or words for your spray for blueberries plz?
Whey…. Yes, whey. lol…. Sit a clean jar of milk out in the sun for a few days. The whey will separate. It’s the liquid on the bottom. Curdle and whey. Like little Ms Muffet that sat on her tuffet.

@@Mrsmetamorphosis2012 My pleasure
I have 3 blueberry plants I think I need to replant. They are in the ground and about a foot a part. I have had them since 2021.I get a few berries but they have not grown. What time of year should I dig them up? I am thinking using a galvanized band and filling like you did. They were recuses from the clearance area. I and 9a NCFL. Thank you.
Hi Lawana, Thanks for the question and yes, I do believe it would benefit your blueberry plants by repotting them. Blueberries are one of the few bushes in the garden that will do better in planters if you don't have acidic soil. The galvanized bands sound like a good option. You would want 42 plus inches in diameter as blueberry roots tend to spread close to the surface rather than going deep. You want to try to have them moved right about now so that they can establish the roots before winter sets in. Follow the steps in the video and I would almost be willing to bet you will see a 200% change in your berry production next year.
Have a "Berry" good evening 😁
@@growingoutthebox Thank you for replying. I will work on repotting them ASAP. I will update when I do. Thank you for all the post you do.
@@growingoutthebox Also how deep are your containers and do they have a bottom?
@@lawanacroskey7994 I really do it for you. 🤗
How do you get whey for your blueberry bushes? Is that just a whey protein powder?
Would like to try that but not sure I understand.
Hey Shelby.... Just take a clean jar of milk and sit it in a warm location for about a week. The curds will float to the top and the WHEY will be the liquid at the bottom. Strain and mix 50/50 with distilled water. This is also a powdery mildew deterrent.👍🏽 Click that notification bell.
Thank you! I'll try that!
How do you build those little metal beds?
less than $10 total cost per bed.

Can you propagate blueberries in the fall?
Yes but the cuttings need to be kept in a warm location with good indirect lighting. I just bought a few cuttings inside after a few days of low 40s and I’m hoping I didn’t cause any permanent damage. I’m starting a few more cuttings today as a matter of fact so look for that video. I’ll show how I make my organic rooting hormone, grow medium and dome for the planter. Make sure to click the notification 🔔🤛🏽
Like whey protein powder? Also what do use to keep your soil ph low I can't get mine lower than 6.2
It’s not the soil acidifier if that’s what you are thinking. It’s the grow medium. The soil acidifier helps maintain the low pH. Save yourself a lot of headaches by using the mix. It makes growing blueberries far more enjoyable and rewarding when you see how they respond.
@@growingoutthebox ok that makes sense. I been chasing it trying to lower my ph 😭 all year long I'm gonna have to get the mix cause my kids love blueberries. I'm thinking 🤔 about repotting my 2 year bush it's big but no fruit. I may put it in the ground.
@@urbanharvestdfw Personally I think planters are better for blueberries. Try repotting with the mix I’m showing and next grow season they will take off. The correct pH can’t be overstated. 4.5 to 5.5 …. It would take at least a year to see a difference by adding the soil acidifier and you will still have to fight to keep it low. Mini pine bark nuggets alone has a pH around 4.0 to 5.0 and at least a gallon and half of water every week. When they are flowering never allow them to dry out.
@@growingoutthebox I think I may need. Little umbrella for them to cause in the summer it's brutal

What are you spraying on them ? How often ?
I spray my blueberry bushes with whey... Take a glass jar with a cup and fill it 3/4 with milk and seal it. Sit it outside or in a warm location in the house for a few days. The curds will separate from the whey. The liquid remaining in the bottom is whey and where all the proteins and nutrients are. It really is that simple. The beautiful part is that you can use milk that is out of date.🤩
@@growingoutthebox wow , I’ve never heard of this before. How often and when do you spray them ?
@@etxhooligan5026 Spray whey on squash and you will have no powdery mildew. the key is preventive. Start before you see any problems. I do a bi-weekly but I'm sure you could go longer.
I tried breaking up the root ball on some blueberry plants I bought in the summer and I ended up killing the plants 😭
What exactly did you do?
@@growingoutthebox I bought two pink lemonade blueberry plants and I’m not exactly sure what I did to kill them. That particular variety isn’t really suited for my zone to begin with. Maybe I let the root ball dry out at some point. I honestly don’t know what I did that killed them, but when it happened right after I broke up the root ball. I probably shouldn’t have done that much damage to the roots in the dead middle of summer too.
Where do i buy waite?
Hey and thanks for the question. “Whey”…. Like, Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet eating her curds and whey…. Just sit a clean jar of sealed milk outside for a few days until the curds separate from the whey…. The whey is the watery liquid that settles to the bottom. Mix 50/50 with distilled water.
@@growingoutthebox blessings to you and thanks. I am in 6b and i have moved 2 baby blueberry bushes inside because of low temp in 40's but there is an older one on about a year old on the back terris. All the leaves is red and some yellow.😕
@@honeybee6674 The red is signaling fall and then dormancy. Depending on the variety, it needs to go through a certain amount of chill hours or you lessen the chances of flower buds/fruit. I grow southern high bush verities. Chill hours can range from 150 to 1,000 chill hours depending on which plant. Chill hours are temperatures between 32 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Do you know the names of your blueberry bushes. I could tell you the chill hours needed. The chill hours will determine when and if your blueberries will fruit. They have to go through it.
@@growingoutthebox 1. Plants that Work In the Kitchen Northern Highbush (Duke # 12 ) atleast that is what the card says.
2. Also Legacy Northern Highbush 4 plants in 2 each 3lb black grow pots. Thank you. Should i sit them back outside now. The four plants are a foot tall. I have a meyer lemon tree about a foot tall. I take all four anf lemon tree plant out in the day and bring they in at night. However, i can sit the four blueberry bushes outside now with the Duke that is about a year old. I will have figure out jow to trim the Duke because i want it to spread like yours but for now it is in a 5 gallon black grow pot container. Thanks!
@@honeybee6674 Both Duke and Legacy are good selections for 6B. 800 - 1000 chill hours so taking them inside is not the best if you want them productive. You may want to try leaving them on the patio but you definitely want a wider planter as blueberry roots spread more so than dive. Mulch heavy. I use mini pine bark nuggets in the mix and as a mulch.
