Why do things get smaller the further they go?

In this video, we talk about an interesting topic that we encounter everyday but dont talk about. Why do things get smaller the further they go? An Example of that is the sun! Why is the sun smaller than a penny? I mean it obviously isnt, its just very far away right? But so what if its far away?
