  • Long before Netflix came around people would rent movies from a video store. This was a huge part of our culture in the 1980s and 1990s. In this video we will take a closer look at some of the video stores we loved that no longer exist!

Me too! I still have some VHS & vinyl for the nostalgia and because some of it will never get released on disc or streaming. I even still like flipping through those big old paperback movie guides. I don’t always really care to read what someone under the age of 30 thinks about an older movie. I still buy streaming stuff that I love or don’t have yet if I can find it on sale, mostly in case there’s ever a fire. I started buying DVDs in the summer of ‘99 & Blu-rays in 2008, so I’d never be able to replace everything.

Now I go on quests at the Goodwill. It isn't the best though. Most of the well taken care of vinyl is stuff like Lawrence Welk or Mitch Miller. The classic rock gets snatched up almost as soon as it's put out.

I worked at a small town Blockbuster from 1995-2000. 2002, I got pulled over for speeding, but the cop recognized me from Blockbuster and let me off with a warning. From 2009-2018, I had moved to the next big city over, but as soon as I moved back, as I'm filing my change of address form at the post office, the postal clerk recognized me as "the Blockbuster guy", almost two decades later.

I'll always remember Myra. The lady who worked my favorite mom n' pop video store in the 80's and 90's called A&B Video. That store introduced me to a myriad of video games and also something called "Wrestlemania". lol
One time my Mother almost called Myra when I told my Mom that she allowed me to rent "Faces of Death" without her permission. I finally folded under pressure and admitted to my Mother that an older friend had picked it up for me. I couldn't burn my bridge to Myra. After all, there were several times she would hold NES and SNES games for me!

I'm old enough to have experienced both renting from the video store and working at one. Another sad loss from rental stores disappearing is it was a great way for teenagers to dip their feet into the job market.
Here in Northern IL, we had a local shop called Video Unlimited. From the mid-1980s until around 1998, it was a Friday ritual to go there, rent a couple movies and games, then go next door and pick up our Little Caesars pizza.
Sadly, Hollywood Video moved in across the street and it was over for Video Unlimited by then.
Last movie we ever rented from the local shop was Starship Troopers.

I was in college in the early 1990s, and it was a wonderful ritual of Friday or Saturday evening, heading out with friends to the video rental store to rent (sometimes buy) rent a bunch of videos. New Releases were too expensive to rent, but we could choose from old Black&White classics from old Hollywood; foreign movies from Asia (China was a serious art film powerhouse back in the early 90s! People forget), Europe, or Africa; Gritty Cult classics from the '70s and '80s; '60s Italian Giallo, French New Wave....boy it was an amazing time to be newbie film buff. Pretty soon I noticed that local public libraries and bookstores were building up their own video collections too to compete with Blockbuster Video and other franchises.

The best thing about physical video rental stores is a lot of them had older or harder to find videos that you just don't see on streaming services. You could find some really odd, niche, and cult shows and movies back in the 90s at your local video store. The closest we came to it in the recent 2000s was when Netflix actually rented DVDs and had lots of hard to find movies. Last I checked a few years ago Netflix still rented physical DVDs and still had some of those rare movies, but as the DVDs were progressively more damaged from use they just stopped replacing them so even that era is coming to an end.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  Рік тому +1

I had no idea that Netflix had still been sending out DVD's. The concept was great but DVD's do get scratched and damaged easily. If the mini disc sort of format had come in then it would have been much better. But that was squashed as it would mean that people wouldn't be buying as many copies. I do miss those old rental days and finding the more obscure movies as you described. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!

The small scale stores were always the favorite. Partly because it was these Video stores that had those "Special" sections usually in the back. Those of us who were underage always had our plans to sneak into those sections. And just looking at the covers was enough. Then we celebrated becoming 18 so we don't have to sneak into those sections anymore. Another type of Video store that's an endangered species is the Adult Video Stores. The last time I recall renting a video from a store, was in the late '90s.
By about 1997, the local public library had begun carrying movies.
And so I started getting them there, because they were free.

I worked in video stores for 12 years when I was younger. I remember when people would sometimes damage their tapes and scream bloody murder when we told them the cost to replace it was $79.99. It's true, though, that's how much new video releases would go for back in the day. And if people rented a few movies and they were 3 or 4 days late, they would charged "additional rental fees" (just a different way of saying "late charges"), and it would cost them $20, 30 or more. Those were the people who never came back, after refusing to pay. And how about membership fees just to be able to rent them at all? The first store I worked at charged $35; but the store down the road cost $75 for a "lifetime membership". Whose life? None of those stores even exist anymore.

We had a local store called Circus Video that, while it wasn't as cheap as Family Video in terms of rentals, the place felt like the lobby of a movie theater in how they decorated it.
This also reminds me of a story about a dog I had named Odie. Odie was a dachshund, and he loved attention. One spring day mom took my sister and I to the Video store to rent movies (and for me games) when we kept hearing a car horn go off and people were gathering at the front of the store, laughing.

In the store it looked like a passageway for employees, but one day sitting at the traffic light out front I glanced over and saw the letters high on the wall that marked the passageway. At first I thought that a store calling itself "Family" and having an adult section was a contradiction, but then I realized that adults are part of the family, too. Incidentally, I had my first Marco's Pizza last night and it was very good. I'd never bothered with it before.

I never knew about that section so that is interesting. I do think it's interesting how these Family Video stores started selling CBD oils and lotions and now here in Oklahoma they are all full fledged marijuana stores. I have always wonder if that is the business they transitioned to since they owned the store properties. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of Family Video!

Part of the fun in going to these places was being there with your date, having physical merchandise to look at, and running into friends from the local area. I miss the days of the video store. I remember going to the store and renting a VCR and movies. The VCR used to be encased in hard plastic to protect the machine during rental from damage. Made it heavy. That was before we got a VCR of our own. Loved to go to the video store and spent an hour just looking for movies to rent. Sadly the last local video store closed in my home town about 5 years ago. I miss those days that are gone forever. Love the videos you put out reminding those who remember those days you highlight.

We had a place called PS Video in Wisconsin in the 80s and like you said new releases were always out. I'll never forget some of the horror VHS boxes as a kid which scared the crap out of me. I remember we rented Teen Wolf Too when we were at our cabin, my dad played it through the camcorder since we didn't have a VCR there. Years later my brother got a job at Hollywood video, the company was so nice though they lost a lot of money I think, people would rent tons of movies and never pay late fees or return them and they'd let it slide. I really liked Family Video also, older movies were only $1 to rent. Sadly they closed but the Marco's Pizza is still open. Streaming and Netflix killed it all. In the earliest years of my life we had both a Hollywood Videos store and a Blockbusters store near me. I would get to go to Hollywood Videos specifically very often with my family and I remember renting vhs tapes of shows like the original Pokémon anime and a good amount of Random House home video tapes (I still love that logo to this day). That location also had a Game Crazy store next to it and that is where me and my siblings rented video games. The locations closed in the mid 2000's when I was still really young (I was born in 1998) but we were lucky enough to still have the rental boxes for Mario Party 5 and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour with the Hollywood Videos logo on the back of the boxes (these games I remember we bought, very likely they were the last ones available which is why I have the boxes). My Blockbusters is obviously closed as well and I do remember renting an Arthur film there once but Hollywood Videos for me was a great store I was lucky enough to grow up with.

The library is a good option. Not many people realize that you can request titles through the interlibrary system online if your local library doesn't stock many titles. I'm sure the selection depends on where you live. Living in a big city, I'm usually shocked by some of the ultra obscure titles I was able to track down. The only downside, other than the fun of being able to browse in person, is that most libraries didn't evolve past the DVD format.

We had a Hastings near us and it had CD's, DVD'S, Books and magazines. My family and I would always visit it whenever we came into town. Such a shame that it's no longer around anymore. I too really hate how things turned to streaming instead of physical media. It's just not the same.

After working my very first job as an usher at the United Artists Smithtown Theater I switched to video. I spent two years working at Mega Movies. They had roughly 12 stores on Long Island in the late 80s and early 90s until they sold to Blockbuster and then went under.

I’m in Virginia Beach and I frequented local Hollywood Video and Blockbuster. We also had a Video Express. My favorite rental spot was The independent Naro Video in Norfolk. Luckily, they donated the extensive collection to ODU library for future generations. (They had indie movies, foreign films, and much more.)

Sadly we are selling the home after mom passed and slowly clearing out the house. Thanks for a walk down memory lane. Keep up the great work, my friend.

My son was born in 99 I couldn't afford cable, but frankly I didn't have time for tv. A movie gallery opened 2 miles from my home. They had dollar rentals for new customers and that was the entertainment for us. Those guys working at my store were just like it was in the 80's. Good recommendations, they knew you by name. I was in there so much, they would even hold a new release when they could. I miss those days, even became friends with a few of them

When I was in college at the University of Oregon, there was a video store called Flicks & Pics (colloquially known as Friendly Video since it was on Friendly Street) that asked you *not* to rewind your video. They said it was because an jostling, like in a car, would cause damage to the spool.
Also, as a kid in the 80s, our video store in Manhattan (Trader Rat's was the name, I kid you not) often had very famous visitors. Everyone from Mike Tyson to JFK Jr.

Very interesting on both of those stores. I have never seen a store that didn't want you to remind and now that you say that I'm surprised more didn't say that. After all those things could get price and some cheap VCR could ruin it. That would be really neat to run into some of those celebrities in the other store.
