Edit: I have changed the title wording from MOH "winner" to "recipient". I had copied the original title and was unaware of any mistake until brought to my attention by comments. Thank you very much. I apologize for the low volume, it's an issue I can't resolve because I no longer have the original video.

Thank you for filming and posting this video. This should be required material in every High School American history class (if they still teach true American history in High School)
@@kittybitts9530 i can assure you they in-fact do not still teach true American history any longer, at least American history, that instills pride to be an American. quite the opposite actually. (at least from my high school and prior school experience) they teach kids to be ashamed of americas history. like America has been a war mongering self righteous land and oil thief. its a real shame and it has a big part to play in todays social climate, specifically antifa, blm (specifically the organization, not the message, i whole heartedly believe in the message black lives matters but the organization is in my opinion using that message to make it so no one can disagree with there movement), and just what seems like a hate for country.
im sorry for the rant
All good ... Easily misworded ... Thank you for the video
Awesome interview.
That’s my grandfather he’s talking about at @21:10. James L Gant. A war hero and Purple Heart recipient. He was known as Mr “Always Ready”. He is missed every day.
I was happy to hear your grandfather survived his massive wounds. It sounds like your grandfather was a significant influence in the outcome of this story.
❤
The Lord only knows how many young men survived thanks to his desire to prepare young men for the worst in order to survive. He must have been one tough customer! I am glad you were able to enjoy his company for the remainder of his life.
So many stories are now finally coming out...
All heroes...in a war that was so contentious...
Blessings....
God bless you and your family.
He remembers every full name of his buddies and every town and state they lived in. This man is still squared away and a blessing to the rest of us. May God keep blessing him and keep blessing these United States of America 🇺🇸 🙏
That impressed me a great deal. His comments about the MOH being a symbol of love astounded me. That we would all vow to not give our money to communists would be awesome.
Thank you for your service .
Amen
My daddy is the same. He can tell you where his buddies live, their kids, their jobs, etc.
That’s the difference between passed generation’s veterans. Even the 90 year old recall better than millennials can recall yesterday. And gen z doesn’t have a clue what’s going on
"You only lose when you quit trying, just never quit trying." I'm going to remember to tell that to my son tomorrow.
Do you know Chirs weatherly from va beach
You know, I always wonder why my father instilled the mentality of a warrior inside of me, all I know is I’m 21, and I can’t stop my pursuit of serving.
The USMC put that into my mind in 1978. Never quit.
Did you tell him
Keep in mind that quitting while you're ahead, is NOT the same as quitting.
“My name is on the back of it but it doesn’t belong to me, I’m just a caretaker of it”
Those are the most powerful words any man could ever say about his actions to revive the Medal Of Honor
Love how he says “so I started doing my job as a soldier.” Instead of saying “so I started shooting mfs”. This guy is nothing short of amazing.
I've met SAMMY a number of times at the VIETNAM REUNION IN KOKOMO INDIANA GREAT MAN AND WOULD TALK TO EVERYONE SHAKE HANDS WITH EVERYONE THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR OUR COUNTRY GOD BLESS YOU AND WATCH OVER YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AMEN
you have not met many vets have you.
What an amazingly humble hero this man is
I just met Mr. Davis at an airport. For some reason we kept running in to each other until I was ‘forced ‘ to have a conversation with him. I’m truly humbled by this man. I have not had this spirit of inspiration from another man in a long time. I’m not easily humbled, but I have not felt like such a boy in front of a real man in quite some time. God put our paths together for a reason, and I will never forget Sammy.
is he still alive ? I would be humbled & honored to meet this man
I met him a month ago. Meeting him is a honor. Not many men make me feel like a boy.
Did your sergeant survive his wounds and if so do you keep in touch?
Sammy Davis was at my grandfather's funeral today, him and my grandfather fought in the war with eachother , I'm glad that I got to meet him 🇺🇲
Sammy Davis sang good

Your comment lets me know a couple things about you. One you are a little privileged piece of shit and two you care only about yourself an no one else because you've never nor will you ever in your entire existence make a personal sacrifice for anyone else. I'm a Retired Marine Corps Force Recon Gysgt i enlisted in 1991 and Retired in 2015 I've seen Combat in Somalia in '93, Bosnia in '95, Kosovo in '99, Iraq in 2004 and 2006 and Afghanistan in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Just so you know Mr. Davis and his friends his brothers along with my father who is a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran and so many others who fought before, during and after to include myself and my son who fought in Afghanistan in the Army in 2012 for his first tour at the same time i as a Marine was serving what would be my last tour in Afghanistan. We all made those Sacrifices just so you can leave the comment you did. So on behalf of myself and all those above mentioned i would like to say...YOUR WELCOME YOU LITTLE PRIVILEGED PIECE OF SHIT.
The way this young man (at the time) was able to retain battlefield awareness in such a chaotic situation, injured surrounded by enemies, with bullets flying everywhere is incredible. He was an artillery man, a rifleman, a machine gunner, a medic, and a rescue operator all rolled into one. All done while sustaining injuries that would've incapacitated a normal person. God was watching over this hero.
As Americans we should all get down on our fckn knees and thank God there there are men like this.
An absolute hero in every sense of the word. Thank you Sammy
You’re an inspiration.
as opposed to the jackasses that sent guys like this to fight in an unwinnable conflict halfway around the world....

"You don't lose until you quit trying". Deep respect for this exceptional man.
This man is the most inspirational MOH recipient I have ever heard. It's a medal of love. You never lose until you quit. Words to truly live by.
John Chapman 😞
After watching this I just found my one true Hero that I've always hoped to gain inspiration from. This is the definition of how a man should be.
Damn skippy. His dad definitely did his job.
He’s an active templo worthy member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A good god fearing man. Humble man. A great role model.
His mention of needing stay squared away in order to preserve the integrity of the MOH in the face of temptations to do wrong things was very powerful to me. If anyone has the right to have a big ego it is Mr. Davis, yet, he takes the high road of Honor, Integrity and Humility. He inspires me to be a better man now that I've heard him tell his story.
Im a Canadian, but I wanna say i respect this man so much and I wish I could be half the man he is.
I am massive history buff. Everything from the war in Afghanistan to the viking conquest of england to alexander the great. Nothing and i mean nothing has ever moved me like this film. This man represents everything a man, soldier or human being should be and should strive to be. I can never be thankful enough for people like Sammy. Ever.

Wow! Those were kind words. I hope he reads your comment. ❤️
This man is the definition of "Humble". My Dad was a Corpsman in Vietnam, received the silver star, and never talked about it, but when asked about his time, he would say the exact same thing, "I was just doing my job". I have great respect for all the honorable men that has fought for Our Nation. God Bless Them All 🇺🇸
well said Jon Yeager....it shines in this hero.
Damn fine words. Not many men of this caliber in todays society.
This should 1000000% be made into a movie. What an amazing story. It's amazing what human beings can do when it's all on the line.
If anybody ever asks you what a man is, send them to this vid.

@@trevorslinkard31 evil is made, not born.
This man is the meaning of the word HERO. He remembers all of his brother's names and where they are/were from. Incredible Soldier, Man and Hero.
People throw the word "hero" around way too easily when it comes to these veterans. He was a "hero" to those he was with in Vietnam. The rest who believe he is a "hero" believe in the Tooth Fairy" also. Vietnam did absolutely nothing for American safety, security and freedom. All it did was claim 60000 American lives and waste the country in treasure and talent. Not to mention it almost tore America apart. He was an invader and aggressor in someone else's country that did nothing to Americans or the USA. When it comes to Vietnam...he can get to the back of the line when the term "hero" is used. There are tons of people in society that are true heroes that no one will want a video of. This man allowed himself to be sent by his government to another continent and hemisphere to kill or be killed. The US never had the guts, integrity or authority to declare war. He was an invader and aggressor in someone else's country that did nothing to Americans or the US. He did absolutely nothing for American safety, security and freedom by being in Vietnam. He was a chump and a pawn of the US Government and the military/industrial complex. He is not a hero or someone's victim. He is a survivor of an American disaster that he contributed to
This humble man should be what everyone should strive to be
Aa a 26 year old American, knowing, and hearing Sammy’s story is greatly inspiring. What a wonderful man with a great character. His words resonated with myself and appreciate Sammy’s wisdom. God bless you sir for your service for our country. Thank you for sharing this interview.
He has a phenomenal memory, he even remembers where his fellow soldiers were from.
PFC Sammy Davis arrived in Vietnam a couple months after I arrived, having transited the Pacific Ocean by Navy troop ship. I wasn't close enough to hear the explosions at the ammo dump but remember the reports vividly. This interview, telling of the events of that night down along the Mekong, is one of the most incredible stories I have ever heard. Here is a man, not just a perfect example of what a soldier can be but, even more so, a wonderful American human being. I salute him!
Thank you, sir.
Thankyou for your service.
Thank you both. From one combat veteran to another.
What can be added to this story but no greater love does a man have than to lay down his life for his friends.
Mr. Davis is neighbor of mine, that is to say he lives not over two miles from me in SW Central Indiana in the country. I met him and his wife once at a local Cracker Barrel. You have to be in awe of a fellow like this and just wish and hope that there are more out there just like him.
“He won the war, but lost the piece” took me TF OUT!!! What a gift of life he is.
Here is one of the greatest men I've ever come across! A humble hero. Thank you Sir!
The most inspirational MOH story I’ve listened to. Just when you think he shows heroism in battle, wait there’s more.
There is a video here covering every single story (maybe the posthumously awarded) and every single story will take you one a ride. You can't take but a couple at a time.
The part where he talked about holding the grandchild of his fellow soldier he saved was enough to get me misty eyed lol.
Mr. Davis I haven't cried in years but hearing you describe the meaning of love brought me to tears thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for your selfless deeds in combat. Welcome home.
I met this gentleman at the wall.. I was in an honor guard at a ceremony and he was an invited speaker. A genuine humble and caring man. Spoke softly and was interested all of the rest of us in uniform. I am proud to have shaken his hand and hope that some of what he his rubbed off on me. I felt a kinship with him in one way, we both played harmonica..lol
I’m a vet having a tuff time in my life now but your story has changed my outlook. You only lose when you quit trying thank you for your service and god bless you and thank you for your service.
Thank you for your service William.....hang tough brother!
Hey William, don't know if this is service-connected or not BUT, please connect with support. You, too, are a very important person...My Dad did NOT accept support after we separated from the Army, He turned into a drunken menace and drank himself to death. The most amazing man I have ever met, humble, honest and above all rest loyal.. it gave me chills when he said he was trained to get the MOH but knew nothing about receiving. They don’t make them like that anymore. I can’t even begin to imagine the scope of what he saw and not once did I hear him say how scared he was but heard him say throughout this riveting interview was how he Loved his brothers in arms with no care for himself but keeping them alive was his motivation to keep going. In my opinion this is one of the greatest Americans I have ever had to privilege to listen to. Just amazing
They definitely still make them like that, I've walked next to some real warriors during my time in

Holy shit this was probably the best MOH story I’ve ever heard. 25k views does no justice to this mans bravery and dedication to his country. The whole world needs to hear this
In all fairness to your 25K views comment, there are numerous videos of him recounting his actions. All of them are amazing.

I have had the honor in meeting him twice. He is a very humble and great man
My day has changed. So has my mind. Mr Davis made difference the day he did his job in Vietnam,. November 18th 1967, and he's made a difference again today, January 2 2022, by reminding me about love and spirit. We all face a battle of sorts in life. We don't lose until we give up.
Beautiful to know there are human being’s on this earth like this man , God bless 🙏🏻🇺🇸
A 27 year old bitter old man. That sentence is the one that stuck in my head. They were children
Sammy speaks in simple terms, honest terms. He has gathered more wisdom than even he himself may know.
He has learned what it is to be human.
This man has gone through so much in his life both on and off the battlefield. Much respect sir!
Much Respect to you Sir. Who said there wernt any heros anymore. Thank you for your service Mr. Davis.
I did my OSUT training at Fort Sill as a 13B Artillery soldier in 2005. I remember seeing Sammy's plaque and that he was a MOH recipient as an Artillery soldier but didn't know much about his citation for his actions. Years later after I did my own tour in Iraq and was discharged I came across this interview and instantly recognized his face from that plaque. I've watched this interview at least 10 times. Sammy is such a humble man and the way he tells this story of him and all his Artillery brothers brought me to tears. What a great man
I met the man when I was just 15. I heard him and his wife (an equally amazing person) tell this and other stories.
He told of why he joined, the patriotism he felt, and how much it pained him that they had no public support. He then played "Shenandoah" on the harmonica- to this day one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard
Situations don't create heroes- but they do expose them. Sammy davis is an ordinary man, who's experience has exposed extraordinary heart.
I may not be American, but it is an honour to hear this story. Those who serve deserve all our respect, because we who haven't can never truly understand what they went through. That doesn't mean we can't be grateful for the lives we get to live because people like this did what they did. Thank you for your service, to all dedicated servicemen and women, the world over.
How Humble, beautiful kind person. This is what we, who care, inspire to be. I would be very very proud to have a man like this in my family. This is the kind of man who should be ruuning countries.

What a true patriot. He obviously has a true appreciation of love and life.
We all could learn from his experience.

This man is a downright American hero. Yet his humility and respectful manners is 180 degrees counter to Hollywood and Netflix typecasting. I truly wish movie and TV writers/producers would research men like Sammy L. Davis and use these real life heroes as characters in their productions. If they did, generations would have respect for the men who fight and sometimes die for our freedom.
This is the America I know. He grew up in Indiana and I grew up in South Florida, but we feel the same about our fellow man.
All of this division and strife are new to me. Fellowship and Patriotism threaten the demagogues that want to divide us to conquer us!
Wow! I almost passed on this video because of the length of it. So glad I watched every second of it. This man is a true hero and yet, he says he was simply doing his job. I am thankful for every one of our soldiers who gave so much for our freedom.
Same. "I need to go to bed. I can't watch this one." Nope.... started and couldn't stop, not only because it was an amazing story, but also because I wouldn't disrespect this BAMFer by not paying rapt attention all the way through.
I am very proud do call Sam a cousin and family. He is more than a hero he is what makes American great
Is he still alive ? I have no words to describe the respect, admiration I have for this man... Unlike every Navy Seal the likes of Chris Kyle, Marcus Lutrell, Rob O'neill who glorify their violence this man is reserved, humble, did'nt monetarily capitalize on his heroic actions... God Bless him
My grandfather was in the Pacific during world war II. My grandfather raised me and taught me that my integrity is my most valuable possession. This gentleman is the embodiment of what my grandfather taught me. This man's story is most likely the most inspiring thing I have ever heard. He has my utmost respect.
What a story! What an outstanding man. He was talking straight while I had a lump in my throat all along his description. People like him make the arch of Justice bend towards right.
In my life I have had the distinct honor of personally knowing five Medal of Honor recipients. I have not met Sammy L. Davis, MOH but I would love to...just to say to him, which he would discount, that he is a hero of heroes...not just for the actions in battle, but for being the kind, soft spoken, genuine, loving man among men that he is. All that came through in this interview. Thank you Mr. Davis for your service to our Nation and for continuing to give of yourself to our citizens. You truly are one of a kind among men.
Cheryl I had the honor and privilege of meeting Sammy Davis in the early 90's when my daughter was attending Manteca High near Stockton, California. He was the most humble unassuming person I have ever met. He was very respectful of the 5th Marines. I also had the honor of knowing Vince Rios when he served with Alpha Company 1st Battalion 5th Marines. Vince was, and still is my hero.
OMG! I am listening to this amazing man talk in such a calm every day voice, he tells his story calmly without emotion and every minute this goes on this hero become larger and larger. I am amazed at his bravery, his strength and loyalty towards his brothers. I really don't have words that make justice to such a hero. I am in deep respect for such a brave heroic man and his brothers who fought with him.
I love how every medal of honor recipient says they didnt do anything heroic, they were just doing their jobs. I have so much respect for these men and women who protect this great nation. I thank you all for your service
This guy is a national treasure! Thank God for him and all those like him.
That's the most powerful story I've ever heard. I served 25 years this man an his brother's are heroes
This man was a 'recipient' of the Medal of Honor because he truly 'earned' it by doing his job. His story is truly captivating and because he was nominated for the Medal of Honor by his fellow brothers-in-arms says it all. The idea that the video starts with his expressing that he understands the difference between those that oppose a war and those that oppose a warrior points out that he received the Medal of Honor because of his deeds and NOT because of his military rank or social status. He is a gentleman's gentleman. Period.
Hero. That's what he is He is a hero plain and simple
I’m a civ. One thing I’ve learned from these videos is leadership is a vital part of making good soldiers
Words escape me . I’m trying to think what to say , probably the greatest account of bravery I’ve ever heard .

Incredible and inspiring...in the dictionary by the word hero should be this man's picture, for he is not only a great American hero, but an awesome and humble man...the world today needs to definitely take inspiration from Sammy L Davis's life and story.
I believe back in 2012, or 2013 I flew from Indianapolis to Louisiana thru Dallas. Mr Davis and his wife was on that flight. The pilot that we had announce a Medal of Honor winner on the flight. Being a retired Military myself I knew what that meant. Evidently he was going to Dallas for a Medal of Honor Conference. I was able to met him briefly in the terminal in Dallas. What a humbling experience for me. Not everybody will get this decoration in their career. What an honor for me! Thank you Sammy.
What a giant spirit this man possesses. Thank you for your service.
There aren’t enough adjectives to describe this man. One in a million. How can anyone do more with such a heart ? He just did what he had to as he saw it.
Most definitely
How is this story not more popular? This was the best MOH story I’ve ever heard. What a warrior and privilege to off had such a man fight for our country.
2nd time I’ve seen this video, now I know what the meaning of “ Humble “. He’s a humble man, with a very soft touch that makes my heart glow warm. I served about 6 months ahead of him and know of what he talks, I’m so jealous, because I have not been humble, I’ve been bitter and feel shame. May God be with him till death.
Thank you for your service!
I missed going by just a few years. A couple of the older guys living on my street got drafted. You have every right to feel bitter, but by NO men's should you feel shame. The people who should be ashamed of themselves are the people who contributed to the horrible, disgraceful way y'all were treated when you came home. Whether you got drafted or signed up voluntarily, there's no greater honor than serving our great Country. Thank you for your service Sir, you deserve so much more than you got. God bless you, our Troops, and the USA 🇺🇸
Thankyou for your service.
I'm struck by his intelligence, physical toughness, mental toughness, courage, and love. Remarkable.
How many times did he say dont quit, and shot to hell, he kept going, did all he did, and then loaded the copters before he flew out. An Illinois rig hand. This is a man.
So true. A mans man!!
Wow, what a captivating interview of a everyday common man who went so far above and beyond the call of duty to save his brothers in arms.
Man the part where his “mean old sergeant” is dying and he’s holding his hand...
This man is a American hero like all of our service members....thank you for your service to our country
Wow! What an unbelievable story! If this man had only done half of what he did this would be an incredible experience and worthy of the MOH. This man is a hero and these stories should be on prime time tv. Incredible.
This man is the most wholesome human I’ve ever heard speak. Imagine if more people had his mindset and respect for life and people.
When I was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, In in the late 1980s. I saw him speak at several VFW, American legion halls. He was always polite and a model soldier even though he was no longer active duty.
It was an honor to shake his hand and salute him and the Medal of Honor. He would always tell what he did to earn the M.oH.. He saved many lives while risking his own while under fire as I recall
IT makes me happy that these interviews of such BRAVE and Dedicated men will be kept for all time so that future generations can learn from such MEN!!!!!!

This guy is the epitomy of a man, a True American Patriot... men like this are a rare breed in these sad times....
"Everyone has to work a little overtime." "The medal is not mine, I'm just a caretaker of it." Gen. Westmoreland was wise to assign Cpl. Davis to 18 months on a speaking tour amongst protesters. Very wise. I could listen to this man speak until deaf or he runs out of breath. Thank you, sir.
