  • Aristotle, Plato, and Iqbal were philosophers who lived in different times and places, but they shared some common ideas and philosophical beliefs. One of the main commonalities in their philosophy is their belief in the importance of reason and knowledge in the pursuit of truth and wisdom. They all believed that human beings have the capacity to reason and that knowledge is essential for human flourishing. They also shared a belief in the existence of a transcendent reality beyond the material world and the importance of ethical and moral values in human life. Another commonality is their emphasis on the role of education in the development of the individual and society. For all three philosophers, education was not just about acquiring knowledge, but also about developing virtues and becoming a better person. These commonalities in philosophy reflect a deep understanding of the human condition and a shared commitment to the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and ethical values.

    The problem with individualism is, that it knows no end. It can ultimately lead to anarchy. Since it’s a relatively newer concept, I don’t think we’ve seen the ultimate destruction it’s capable of bringing (although I hope it doesn’t get to that, wishful thinking perhaps). Collectivism, on the other hand, as endorsed by eastern philosophy, has had it’s fair share of governance since time immemorial. It may not be palatable in our “post-modern society”, but at least it gives a clear set of ideals that one may adhere to, which obviously prevents anarchy. A good balance between the two perhaps?

      nationalism and a sense of 'superitority complex' it entails, are the dividends of individualism.

      @Matthehousecat Рік тому

      @@bilal59446 Who says that’s necessarily a good thing? In my opinion, nationalism is still better than the absolute anarchy, which individualism is capable of bringing. It can lead to a slow, but painful societal death. Societies that endorse an absolute individualistic ideal are also some of the worst afflicted with loneliness, negative birth rates, depression that also end up im suicide.

      @@Matthehousecat word man, word.
      What is absolute anarchy though ? I believe, even after democracy prevailing, and nation states taking place, wars and multiple regional instabilities are still there. Anarchy is still there. U blame zia or musharaf all u want but it was also the US that wanted those wars, their hands are as dirsty as ours when it comes to that.
      I am a 90s' kid, and before even turning 30, I have already witnessed, some really messed up wars in this world. and those wars were fabricated democratically, fought to "preserve freedom, democracy and our way of life" as every US president puts it in their so called patriotic speeches. individualism gave them good lives, at the expense of exploitation of others. More on this subject, Bertrand Russell really criticizes the attitude of the west when it comes to colonial and post-colonial benefits.

    • @Matthehousecat
      @Matthehousecat Рік тому

      @@bilal59446 Firstly, individualism is literally defined as having more individual freedoms that may or may not please the state or other people. It creates this bubble in which each person can live without being questioned by anyone around them. That sounds too good to be true, because in theory, it’s possibly a perfect way of living. But is it sustainable? That’s self explanatory. Somewhere along the line, your actions might piss some people off, and they would have the “individual” authority to execute their rights, that may supersede your individualistic rights. Many people may get hurt along the way, the innocent bystanders, and the families of this individual person would be affected to, their friends, and pretty much the society. See where I’m going with this? What would you call that? Anarchy. That’s where a state of absolute anarchy may occur, where the state or any person of elected authority may not have policing rights over the individuals, since that would conflict with their individual rights. There would be no more “objective morality”, since morality would be solely based on “what an individual thinks is right and wrong”. That’s literally where the world is going. The alternative would be collectivism, but that’s been given a bad reputation since the west equates it with theocracies and communism when that’s really not the case. A ruling such as “prohibition of alcohol”, many might not like, but in reality would have better outcomes for the society and literally nobody can deny that. A prohibition on infidelity and adultery may piss individuals off, but wouldn’t that save millions of marriages and therefore help with the situation of prevalent depression, loneliness and crime committed by individuals of single parent homes? I mean, ofcourse I also advocate for individualistic rights, but there should be a balance, and every country or nation state should have full rights in determining where to draw a line. Lastly, I don’t necessarily blame anyone for anything, all societies go through a rough patch every few decades, but you’re right, as Bertrand Russell would suggest, we’re living in a post colonial mindset. I’m not sure if you listened to the full podcast, but Muzammil reeks of post colonialism, and gives too much attention to newer concepts and ideals formed in the modern and post modern era, and completely shuns collectivistic ideals that have existed in this part of the world since time immemorial. What people fail to understand is, in order to be happy, love, family and traditions are the most important things regardless of one’s religious or cultural affiliations, we as human beings are conditioned that way.
      There’s no other animal on the planet that would ever be happy with living in a small box, without a mate and with limited food and water (this last paragraph should suggest you the countries I’m referring to).
