It absolutely is an evolution of the 808 but it does indeed share many similarities with the Klon : runs at 18v, drive knob is dual gang starts with 100% clean and blends in drive as you turn it up, also has a less pronounced mid hump compared to the 808. It is often referred to as Maxon's "Klon killer". Great playing btw. Love the down tuning
Internally, the Klon runs +18 & -9, with a total of 27v headroom (electrosmash can explain that better if need be) while the OD 820 pumps the negative giving it only 18v of headroom. The circuit topology is otherwise near identical to a TS 808.
808 is much more mid pushed, od9 is that plus more high end frequencies with the rolled of bass but a little more bass that the 808. 820 is a whole different circuit. Od820 has more of a full frequency with mid push but not as much overbearing mids like the 808 and ta9/od9. Much more clarity and headroom, especially if run at 18 volt. More of a clean blend for the gain knob. In my opinion the OD820 is the king of all the aforementioned drives. Maintains the fatness. It’s bad to the bone and made to run with an already pushed clean sound, as in what you’re hearing with this super reverb, that I may add-is a great super. Most don’t sound this awesome.
Your channel is awesome, one of the best. Keep it up!
Maxon made the tube screamer for Ibanez. They made some with their name on it. There is more to the story but I got to run.
Love your sound !
Such a groovy video! Excellent stuff sir.
You might be one of the coolest fender players I’ve heard. Just bought this puppy I can’t wait to rip on it. Great video!
OK, Maxon sounds good but... man, what a tasty playing!!! Enjoyed it very much! Also nice "dry" sound (without the OD).

Do you have any frets left on that thing after this video? 😆 holy cow bud you rip it.
From Maxon: "Q) What is the difference between the OD808, OD-9, and OD820?
