Beautifull tune indeed, but almost no one knows about the sad background of it. The lyrics of this song were written by a british captian of a ship that brought slaves from africa to america. In a big storm on the ocean when the ship was about to sink into the sea he feared for his life and began to pray and overthink what he was doing with this men on his ship which were sent to slavery. The result was this poem. His name was John Newton and he convinced William Wilberforce, a member of British Parliment to fight for the abolishment of slave trading.

Written by a guy who ran slaves from Africa to America though... like he literally owned the ship
Beautifull tune indeed, but almost no one knows about the sad background of it. The lyrics of this song were written by a british captian of a ship that brought slaves from africa to america. In a big storm on the ocean when the ship was about to sink into the sea he feared for his life and began to pray and overthink what he was doing with this men on his ship which were sent to slavery. The result was this poem. His name was John Newton and he convinced William Wilberforce, a member of British Parliment to fight for the abolishment of slave trading.
menkulinan aldebaran yes we absolutely do know as it is an English hymn and a huge part of our Christian culture....it is about repentance and reflection; a moment to take stock of ourselves. John Newton also went blind and rejoiced on hearing the news that Wilberforce had succeeded.
