Last Christmas, I got a VHS tape that contained this episode in between "Demolition" and "Sick". It was this scene in particular that got me hooked on this show.
Apparently Mike's "that, I did not expect" was not scripted. The TV was supposed to be thrown through the window, but it obviously didn't make it. Can't remember where I saw it (possibly in a cast interview uploaded to UA-cam), but if the story is true, it's a good bit of improv from the three, and Rik's "Yes! .. Yes! .. Yes!" was probably him trying stalling for time, trying to think something up.
Which would have maybe meant the entire "eat the telly" part was completely off-script. Seeing that it's one of my favourite scenes because it's just so off-the-wall, that's a hell of a good improv.
@@EamonThePhilogynistWalfordHe was also great as the Shopkeeper in bottom Also I hope you've seen Kevin Turvey. He was absolutely mental as the park keeper. "PARDON ME BOYYYYYY! IS THAT THE CHATANOOGA CHOO CHOO" 🤣🤣🤣
@@ColinIngus1 Yes, Bottom is a favourite show of mine, and even though I haven't seen a lot of Rik Mayall's work as Kevin Turvey, I'll keep my eyes open for that particular sketch. 🙂
As an American, once I learned about the UK's TV license fees (it's an inconceivable concept in America) I always wondered if the 'TV inspector man' was playing a British stereotype. Are they viewed as being devious and evil? And feared?
@@zapkvr0101 - Well, yeah, I know that. I meant that the business model for television in America was always 'paid thru advertising'. PBS being supported by the govt didn't start until the 70s. HBO started in the mid-70s. And subscription-based basic cable not until the 80s. Plus the idea of having to semi-voluntarily pay for TV signals that literally anyone can watch with an antenna kind of goes against the prime directive of the FCC. And, politely expecting people to pay money for unencrypted broadcast television is the most British thing I can think of! 🧐

This show was ahead of its time. This would've been an absolute meme machine if it had come out today.
Not sure this show could come out today. But it was great.
"Suicide might be a great hobby but I wouldn't do it for a living" has to be one of my favourite Mike-isms
Rik's delight at being a criminal is heart warming
"Where's your toilet?"
"Oh, upstairs. Just follow your nose."
LMAO!
Rik's membership to the Anarchy Society always killed me
This was my favourite scene in the Young Ones. Eat the telly!
It's a toaster

Look carefully at the TV when he "turns it off" - the test card is painted onto the screen.

TV license fee paid for the BBC. Of course you dont have it in the US

Well I'm saving up to pay the license fine.

"Yabbo" ana heard that in years, lol.
I remember my Mum hiding from the TV Detector man. We ended up getting the tv that was coin operated.
Jesus Murphy, how imperialistic.

I wonder how many brand muffins it takes to pass a tv?

A television license..what an odd concept.

As teens we didn't appreciate Mike's lines but now I think he's pretty droll, especially El Presidente

I’m American, what the fck is a tv license
It’s a regulatory tax to receive television signals/operate a television in your home. They also have a road tax based on how much you drive.
