Youre absolutely right about repeat listens. When this album clicked into place for me, it very quickly became my favorite album ever, maybe even my favorite piece of art. It's incredible.

Same, jarred me at first then saw 8 Circle live version and that was the trigger for me. Now i just trust JV.

Mine too. I heard it first on public radio. It was 29 Strafford Apts. I remember thinking while I was listening the first time... " This is weird, I don't know if I like it or not, but I'm gonna look it up and find out if I do". Then it was over from there lol.😊

Watching the Bon Iver NPR live performance really highlights how great this album is

For sure. As a huge bon iver fan since the beginning, who got to see the debut of these songs live at eaux Claires fest, this album feels like a sketch that was perfected on the live performance.

This album grows on you like a sped-up timelapse of a flower blooming.
Play it while in the sun.
Along with Radiohead and Sigur Ros, Bon Iver’s production, originality, and sense of nostalgia, keep my ears happy.

Great review. I appreciated how even though some of the music struck you as odd, you tried to understand and appreciate what it's trying to make you feel. Music is all about emotion which you touched on beautifully. Not all music is for everyone, but all music deserves to be heard. This is my favourite album of all time, partially because of the experimentation and emotion, but mostly because it takes me to this quiet, dark, thoughtful place that no other piece of music does. It's unique even among Bon Iver's catalogue. But while it is electronic and rough at times, I think the same ethos from Bon Iver, Bon Iver is still there, just through a different lens.
I assume you've already listened through without stopping, which I think is the best way to experience it. There are definitely standouts for me but I think this album works best as one complete experience (the last half in particular is composed through for the most part). A cool thing to pay attention to is how the album slowly becomes less abrasive and tense and more folksy and reflective as you go on. All the anxiety in songs like 10 Deathbreast and 715 Creeks are gone by 8 (circle), which is more of an exhale. It's a really neat experience.

I believe I heard the first track when this album had just come out and thought "wtf is this," then eventually heard the last three tracks (more classic bon iver sounding imo) and decided to give the rest of the album a go. Something about 666 ʇ really clicked and "unlocked" the rest of it for me. Definitely a weird one, definitely a grower, definitely a fantastic album.

sorry if you already know, but the fact that you cited kanye sounding instrumentation, justin has worked with kanye quite a bit, has some writing credits, most notably was the kanye sample of woods on lost in the world.

Yep, this album is in my top 10 ever. It does reward repeat listens, like any great album.
It reminds me, in a weird way, of Astral Weeks, Van Morrison’s otherworldly masterpiece

I will never stop banging on about this album. Same as you i was a big fan of his self titled album and hadnt really listened much to for emma when this came out in 2016. I had got some new headphones so sat down to listen and honestly it surprised me but i didnt love it in the same was as self titled (apart from a few tunes) and honestly if i wasnt already a fan i may have forgotten the album.
Thank God that wasnt the case, since it has become my favourite album and i will listen front to back often. I have a big poster on my wall and a 45 tattoo. Every tune means a lot to me and every tune has been my favourite at different points in my life. Absolutely incredible piece of art. Also if you havent checked out any of the live versions thats a must as they really elevate the tracks and do it slightly differently each time. Praise be to Justin Vernon and his glorious band 🙏

Also the cutting out on 22 was done by recording onto tape and then scrunching the tape up at certain points, really cool technique

Lastly thank you for actually listening to the tracks all the way through, nothing winds me up more than someone reviewing an album that I love and them pausing every 5 seconds like listen to the dawn song

I loved this album when it came out, but now I’m 2023 I’ve had a rough growing up year and it’s definitely my album of the year! Your reaction was spot on , yes some of the jarring sounds may tweak your ear a weird way but I feel like it’s done on purpose to let your ears be ready to accept what is coming next! Thank you so much for reacting to this album! I’m a new subscriber as of this video and my favorite song on this album Was 715 creeks
