In 1985 Peter Motley was the premier player in the sanfl. He was runner up in the magarey medal that year by one vote but consensus was he was the best player that year. His career would have surpassed Kernas and Bradley. In 1986 he suffered a serious ankle injury in the off season which led him to have an interrupted pre season. He should have had treatment but was so keen he started training too early. In 1987 he was ready to fire there was a trial game where he absolutely starred in his favourite position as ruck rover rather than on the half back line. He was ready to take the vfl by storm in that year if not for that tragic car accident. He is my all time favourite player as a Sturt and Carlton fan
Agree Mike. Don Scott called it in the first clip. 'He'll be the pick of the South Australian recruits". i.e better than Kernahan and Bradley, that's saying something. I'm a native Melburnian and have had to search youtube for clips of him at Sturt, he was simply outstanding. He would DEFINITELY been one of the all time greats of the game.
@@pbosustow Thanks mate Don Scott coached South Adelaide in the SANFL in 1985 and would have seen Motley first hand tearing his South side apart when playing Sturt The Footy Film SA channel on UA-cam has clips of Peter Motley in action for Sturt in 83,84 and 85 As well as the state of origin matches SA vs Vic in 83, 84 and 85. Motley starred in those. The 1985 state game was memorable in that Motley won the Fos Williams medal that day as SA’s best player and hands down defeated his opponent that day who had to be moved off him…his opponent none other than Gary Ablett. He was only a kid as well just 20 years of age in ‘85. He is a legend at Sturt despite only 92 games and would have been a Carlton all time great. A tragedy for Peter personally, he was in peak physical condition and has had to live with a physical disability since that callous coward drove their car into him and then fled the scene and Carlton fans were robbed of seeing one of the greatest players to come from South Australia. Easily the equal of Bradley and Kernahan and in many respected football people’s eyes the superior player
@@Mike-gn4un That makes sense about Don Scott. I've seen a bit on the channel you mentioned and yeah Mots was outstanding, as a kid, in that era. I compared him to James Hird, but with a harder edge to boot. Happy he's alive and kicking, and lets be honest, that's what really counts, but us Vics missed out on seeing an absolute superstar player in his prime. Perhaps we would have won four flags in that era instead of two, he may have just made the difference. (P.S. love watching SANFL games from the 80's on youtube, Paul Bagshaw was a star)

The best player I've ever seen. Could do anything. Play anywhere. He had it all.
Yeah it’s a shame. I believe he was better than both Kernahan & Bradley, as great as they were.

What a great man and champion he was
All these highlights in less than a season of football ! What a loss !
VFL Were stuffed without SA & WA plyers. Still are.
