Great information. I began watching this on the Feast of St Stephen, so perhaps God led me to it.
I remember loving the St Wenceslaus carol as a child, and still do. But, as an early young adult, I had, by believing revisionists to know what they were talking about, fallen for some popular errors that were going around. I had also assumed the revisionists to be of good will, even though in hindsight they seemed to have a disturbed joy in spreading doubt - as if to show that you can trust anything taught by Christians.
They said that is was not a Christmas song, that St Wenceslaus is not a king but a duke, and that the story never likely happened in the first place. Once I became Catholic I slowly realized that these claims were nonsense, even if based on half-truths. It is true that the good saint was not a king during life, and in fact did not even desire to be a duke - but did so out of duty. However, the Emperor Charlemagne made St Wenceslaus an honorary king after his death, which is something that an emperor has every right to do - and that is the reason why the song refers to the saint properly as a king.
As for the issue with it being or not being a Christmas song, the claim is again a half-truth if even that. Advent songs are played through all of Advent. Likewise, Christmas songs are played through the entire Christmas season. There is both the feast day of the Nativity, the Octave of Christmas, as well as the 12 Days of Christmas. So even though the song is specifically meant for the second day of the Octave of Christmas, it is still properly considered a Christmas song.
Lastly, the claim that the story is untrue is simply based on the modernist ideas of oral history not being reliable - something that I appreciate you speaking out against in your episodes. The song itself was written as an easy way to keep the good story going. We also know from accounts that the saint was a very charitable man. Sensus Fidelium's youtube channel has a great sermon that explains his life as well as that particular miraculous story. And history even has a proper name for the unnamed page in the song - I believe it is Podevin (might be spelled different), who was even a witness to his martyrdom. The way I view historical Christian accounts that can't be 100% verified is to believe them unless there is actual reason to doubt them - for example, a counter claim story with equal or greater likelihood.
Anyway, I was glad to be cleared of those silly arguments against the song, and now staunchly defend the tradition whenever someone tries to spread such false rumors.
That is a huge tangent only slightly related to your topic, but, it being the Feast of St Stephen (or at least it was over an hour ago), I had it on my mind.
