    As an aging squash playerr over 70 with multiple injuries and joint replacements, I have found this series thoughtful, helpful, and well thought out. This is my favorite squash channel contribution

      That's very kind of you to say so. Having had one hip replaced and the other due for some time this summer, I hope I am still hitting the ball at 70 years old!

    Thanks for your videos which I have been bingeing lately. I try to play with a single yellow dot in the lower reaches of our league whenever I can and try to warm one up if I get on early to ensure I can, but most players insist on a double if we both arrive at the same time. When I arrive and a less good opponent has already warmed up, I usually find they have a double and I wonder why. It’s much more fun with a bouncy ball. One opponent kept power smashing a cold double yellow which I couldn’t return and it was the biggest waste of 40 minutes ever.

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  Рік тому +1

      The story you tell is repeated around the world and it is such a shame. It's so sad to hear you feel you wasted 40 minutes and the only thing I can suggest is to insist on playing half the time with the ball of your choice. I honestly believe that it is perfectly acceptable to refuse to play with a double yellow dot when the circumstances are wrong.
      People hear about the "Double Yellow Dot" that pros use and feel they need to sue it, and of course they are wrong.
      I don't know if you have seen it, but I created a special page specifically about this issue: bettersquash.com/rightball.html

    Hi coach Phillip. For your next video could you answer if you think it beneficial to use a vibration damper? I got one on my new racket but felt it took away some of the racket feel. Thanks. Great content.

      I'll add it to my next video, but the simple answer is they are a complete waste. Do not use them.

    Really like those HECS balls. Could have done with one having been isolating for the last 2 weeks as Covid went through our house. Really missed squash

      Yes, I don't know if they were developed due to Covid, but you are right, they would ahve been perfect!

    I actually find it's a lot easier to get a good lob serve angle if you toss the ball and hit it about head level or higher. A fast serve hitting the sidewall at near the nick with the majority of the pace going through the court is also pretty advantageous to hit from head height or higher. Agreed that hitting a tennis type serve purely downwards is useless though, just that the high serve toss has some fringe benefits.

      @BetterSquash  2 роки тому

      Good to hear you find the lob serve easy.

    Great video coach. Personally found that when I went from stringing my rackets at 28-30 lbs, all the way down to 24 lbs it had a much better impact on my game, not sure why though as everyone says that higher weight for more control… I’m sticking with 24 lbs for now. Regret those years of using rackets at 28 lbs in pursuit of more ball control, was I misinformed??

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  2 роки тому +1

      Well, almost everybody says that higher tension gives more control but that has never been the case for me. In addition, I rarely break frames and I attribute this to 2 things: 1. the lower tension and 2. the fact I rarely hit the wall. Finding the right tension is so important, but it's also both expensive and difficult. You need to try a variety of tensions in the same racket and most people can't afford to do that, I know I couldn't.

    G'day Phillip, I'm just wondering what you think about sticking two grips on the racket? Usually, whenever I get a new racket, the first thing I do is apply the second grip. I feel like I have better control, though I may lose power with the extra cushioning. For my latest racket, I got a close to the top of the range Karakal. I'm playing with the single/original grip. It doesn't feel great, though I want to persevere (and it doesn't help that I am only having a hit a couple of times a month at the moment). I know with many things, it's a case of going with personal preference. Do you have a position on the single or double grip? (I do want to skill up, so I can crush my slightly better playing partners!)

    • @BetterSquash
      @BetterSquash  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ben, I don't hesitate to p[ut a new grip onto a new racket. They are ALWAYS too small, and require something on top. Instead of thinking that the extra cushioning loses you power (that is an interesting point though!), think of it as a shock absorbance system. A grip should be comfortable enough to feel like you have control and ANYTHING you do to achieve that is fine by me.

    Hi Phillip..great videos...i have a few questions...I've been playing badminton for many years but now I'm about to switch to squash. How can I bring my experience from badminton to squash? What must and must not be taken from badminton?

    • @parttroll1
      @parttroll1 2 роки тому +1

      I used to play a lot of badminton at 6th form college and one thing it does help with is taking the ball on the volley I see a lot of club players who routinely let the ball bounce before hitting it which gives the opponent more time to recover for the next shot.
      One thing you won’t be used to is the movements around court and not crashing into your opponent so I’d watch some matches pro or amateur and observe how they get around.
      Also watch your opponent when they are about to hit the ball can help you to follow the ball and prepare for the next shot. Beginner players tend to react to the ball as it comes off the front wall.
