  • The Truth Behind the Happy Mask Salesman - Zelda Theory
Majora's Mask is easily one of the most mysterious games I've ever played, and one of my favorite parts of that mystery is the Happy Mask Salesman. Today, it's time we unravel that mystery and glean the true story behind both the Mask Salesman and Majora's Mask.

Brain: Hey, are you going to sleep?

Exactly. I would add, the fact that he mentions Link's courage means that he knows everything about his former quest (OOT). This contrast to all other Hyrule inhabitants in the child timeline who have no idea of what happens in the future. Hence, his existence is still a mystery in my opinion.

This plays into a theory I have about him. I think the happy mask salesman is actually wearing a form altering mask like the ones Link acquires throughout the game.
Think about it. He not only teaches Link the song of healing which is how Link acquires them, but his piano seems to pop in from no where. Well we see this frequently with Link when HE is using such masks. The small ocarina becomes large cumbersome instruments like the deku pipes or the goron's drums.
What his true form is I do not know, but what if he is the last of this so called ancient tribe. It would explain why he knows so much about Majora's mask when it seems a complete unknown to everyone else.

But what if the mask saleman was the soul in majora mask, or an avatar of adulthood humanform majora? Does it feel strange that the kids on the mood look exactly like a young version of him? I think the saleman is what majora look like before his soul was transfered in the mask. Nintendo could have take anyome face to do the kids on the moon, even the face od the kids in termima city. Instead they took the face of the saleman. I don't think that's a coincidence.

I believe, going by this theory, the resemblance the Salesmen is simple: he was the first to be Corrupted and would become Majora's likeness.
I still believe the final part to this theory would be WHAT majora itself actually is. I believe for certain that whatever it was, it WASN'T always a mask. I think the mask was created with the sole purpose of being able to contain Majora, where it spread its roots and created Termina, until the Happy Mask Saleaman became a vessel for Majora to siphon off of and reawaken fully and play its first game with Ikana before the 4 giants showed up.
Speaking of which, I think one thing I've always wanted a solid theory of, is what the hell are the 4 giants and where do they come from. Do they originate to Hyrule too? If so, what is their reasoning for coming to Termina? Where they the only semblance of reality Majora had? Hense it becoming sad when they departed to their own domains in Termina?
I see this theory ironically as the second half of an incomplete puzzle where we must go back further to find out what majora is!
There's a couple of other videos that are super recent that goes into this, and perhaps even Breath of the Wild 2 will reveal more details on exactly how Majora works since its watchful gaze has been appearing all across the Zelda timeline (that I hope isn't an easter egg).
I personally love the theory also that states Majora's power only functions in Termina. Perhaps SPECIFICALLY now it resides in the mask. Maybe its remaining power was poured into the creation of Termina, being how it had seemingly infinite power there.
That being said, another argument people bring up is that Hyrule and termina must be connected because Hyrule is referenced in Majora's. I believe that's only a one way truth. I DON'T think Hyrule knows of Termina's existence and the video itself sorta explains how that could work.

@@Genasidal yeah, based on what we get, the mask only works in Termina, because in the lost woods when Skull Kid steals links Horse, he doesn’t seem to have any malicious intent, and is just playing a prank, same with stealing the Ocarina of Time, but when he gets into Termina, he becomes evil. I would also agree with the theory that the mask simply contains Majora inside of it, and I would imagine Majora as some sort of demon creature with the same general color scheme of the mask. I would absolutely love for this to be explored in later Zelda games, but I don’t think we’re going to get a sequel to Majora’s Mask anytime soon

It's part of the sympathy you're meant to feel for Majora. It has the mind of a child, and feels deep loneliness and mistrust. Friendship and trust is a recurring motif for the mask: it attaches itself to the skull kid, already a lonely, dejected soul, and manipulates him into abandoning his friends and acting cold. When we enter the moon, majora is represented by children who just want to play, and who question morality.
What seems likely is that Majoras Mask itself was created with a childlike mind along with its vast power. It caused troubles, because it didn't understand right or wrong, and when the ancients sealed it, it felt betrayed. Abandoned for an eternity, it became bitter and hateful. It's mentioned that when the stone tower opened, Ikana Kingdom suffered from a peculiar curse: namely that feelings of friendship and trust vanished. As if once let loose, Majora spread it's hatred across the land.
Ultimately, it's not evil, so much as hurt and upset. It's lashing out in pain, not understanding why it was abandoned, and still sees itself as a lonely child.
It's possible that the ancient tribe built the fierce deity mask specifically to contain Majora, and that's how he was sealed away the first time. As such, he views the fierce deity as the villain

I always felt like the choppiness of his movements was supposed to give a sense that his face was itself a mask or at least mask-like in that it can only convey static expressions. It is not much of a leap to think this was a reference to the character Hexadecimal from Reboot. She was an earlier character who had a face based on theater masks who switched between static expressions to represent her mental instability. While there is no direct evidence that the reference is intentional, Reboot made international news as the first half-hour TV series animated completely using computer animation, so people trying to use 3D models in a cost-effective way might have looked to it early on for inspiration. It is a really cool effect which conveys the Mask Salesman's desperation very well.

I like to think that the mask salesman was actually one of the people who helped create the mask and was the only surviving member of the group after the mask was sealed. This idea would actually work well with your theory that Major's Mask created Termina because it would explain why he is the only Hylian that appears in both worlds, especially since the entrance to Termina is in the Lost Woods, a place adult Hylians should not be able to enter .

Neat idea. One could argue he does know a bit of magic considering his ability to make an organ appear out of thin air, as well as how he knows a magic song that can create masks out of souls...

He also could have been traveling because he heavily suspected that the mask he helped create could cause mass destruction...

I like to Believe that the Masked salesman was part of Demise's original army as his face is somewhat depicted in the intro of skyward sword. He was sealed in the whole game of Skyward Sword by the Goddess Hylia and her army (perhaps Majora's was a part of it? )
And the Happy Mask Salesman, who was in Hyrule playing as an innocent spy scanned Hyrule for the warp point to find Majora's mask.
Come to think of it, the song of healing takes the soul of a person, and forms it into a mask allowing you to transform into said person. The Masked salesman is the only one who knew to play that song.
Reason why I say soul is because of the Kamaro, and Gibdo Mask.
We know that Majora's Mask is a single entity, and not really a healed-mask since the skull kid did not transform into Majora, but instead, Majora took over the skull Kid's body, not to mention he talks and floats around on his own.

I think Termina is the alternate reality version of the Dark World, or in Termina's case; The Sacred Realm. Think about it; LTTP and Majora's mask are the games set directly after OOT, depending on whether the hero is defeated or successful respectively. More specifically, MM takes place in the child era, which would explain how "Termina" could exists without Gandorf already corrupting it. This is further reinforced by the fact that the adult era (the time line that continues after Gandorf is defeated in OOT) does not have any alternate worlds for us to explore at all. The adult era goes right into Wind Waker and then into Spirit Tracks, but there are no alternate worlds because it's presumably just a waste land and there's no reason for any stories to be set within it.
This is where BOTW comes in. It's place in the timeline presupposes a timeline convergence in which the three main timelines merge back into one over ten thousand years after the previous games. If this is true, then it would be the Dark World/Termina/Sacred Realm wasteland is now in a bit of a Shrodinger's cat scenario. This could have something to do with BOTW2's storyline if we indeed explore another world besides a more fleshed out Hyrule (which I sincerely hope we get to see!).

  • @seantheimp
    @seantheimp 3 роки тому +3

I don't think the HMS is immortal or anything like that, I do think he recently unsealed Majora's Mask, but the rest of the theory... fits the evidence disturbingly well. I absolutely love the idea that the Mask created Termina from the darkness it was sealed within.
When we first enter Termina, is _is_ through a location in Hyrule, and not just that: it is within a location called the "Lost Woods", which is cursed that one will die and turn into another defender of what lies at the center. Perhaps the entrance was chosen for this reason, the Woods were cursed as another layer of protection, the power of the seal let some evil leak through? But Link finds his way in either way, and descends...through darkness. Runes passing by, until he reaches an area...almost unformed, as if on the edge of creation?
Also, what if the Stone Tower Temple is both a creation of Majora and the Sages' final attempt to seal the Mask? The imagery idolizes the mask, gives a flaming finger to the gods in the sky, and desecrates imagery of the goddesses' most powerful artifact: the Triforce. We don't see Majora or the Triforce feature anywhere else that the Skull Kid hasn't directly meddled.
The STT is the center of creation, radiating outward from the last ditch effort of the Mask's actual prison, the entire pocket universe of Termina. It grew starting over a thousand years ago from the arbitrary point the Mask existed within, with the Mask exerting direct power over either reality itself or the ancient Ikana people to create a giant "fuck you" to those who imprisoned it, but the temple was still a prison. The world expanded further and further, and eventually Majora - purposely or not - created the Garo people, who would try to steal the Mask from its prison and inadvertently free it. This failed, and all that was left of its machinations was a dead land.
Then the Happy Mask Salesman, whatever his origins, came along...

This is a great theory and I found myself finishing your sentences before you did, just because….well it makes perfect sense. I’d love for Majora to have another adaptation in a game. Even if it’s not link fighting. Like a prequel to the game showing more of its origin. This game is by far one of the best they’ve ever made. Imo.

The HMS is in the intro of SS, standing around Demise and his goon squad of demons, who came from “fissures in the earth”. Then you have ALBW’s MM Easter egg in Link’s house, the raving madmen in the town trying to become demons via masks(also appearing on the box art). It’s implied ‘the tribe’ in MM is probably a reference to these demons. The HMS flickering around light an old fluro light is due to his relationship with MM, like Smeagol in LOTR....
    My theory is that either:
    A) the sentience/ consciousness of Majora, via carrying MM for so long affected the HMS to the point where although he was assisting Link, Majora was acting through him like a puppet (like Puppet Gannon or Twili ‘Puppet’ Zelda) and his actions weren’t noble; he was getting Link to help him free himself of Majora’s grasp. OR
    B) The HMS, in essence is Majora’s projected self/ consciousness/ spirit/ part thereof, which is why for most of the game he only exists in the Clocktower, is only seen by Link and Skull Kid (who both originate from Hyrule) and why he simply walks off and fades into thin air at the end (perhaps he/ his spirit either moved on or were released after Majora’s defeat).

Interesting Idea I had when you showed the Fierce Deity Mask, what if it was an ancient Shiekah who sealed Majora away and this idea of Good Guy's and Bad Guys is actually a recreation of his Banishment to Termina. That's why despite the mask being a culmination of every soul in Termina it visually looks like a Link Shiekah. Support for this also is the fact Yiga (ex-shiekah) in Botw use similar swords and armor to what the Fierce deity use. They're not identical due to colour and size but they are very similar.

I've always thought that the Happy Mask Salesman, was a deity of sorts, be it a minor one certainly nothing compared to the Golden Goddesses, which explains how he teleports around, seems to know things that no one else knows, and how he can materialize an entire organ instrument out of nowhere. Perhaps he was put in charge of safeguarding Majora's Mask and hopefully one day finding a way to eliminate the evil inside the mask, and when it was stolen from him, it all worked out, though his disappointed because he didn't do it himself.

One minor point, the Ikana Kingdom fell because of their war with the Garo, which brings up themes of anger and violence always leading to death and destruction. The fact that the ghosts of the royal guards still bicker and fight after Link defeats them is indicative of the stubborn, combative behaviour that led to their deaths in the first place. If you blame the fall of Ikana on the Mask Salesman those themes are lost. I don't think that he opened Stone Tower 1000 years ago, but that the kingdom is desolate because of its own ruler's despotism getting out of control. I think that opening the Stone Tower to get Majora's Mask merely led to its dark influence bringing the dead back as the undead monsters that are seen roaming around when Link first gets there and that disappear when he completes the Stone Tower and lifts its curse on the canyon.

I like a lot of the ideas you have but my questions would be about the giants. They always seemed like the creators of Termina so Majora creating them would seem contradictory to that and Majora's intentions. Would they be part of Majora's original game?
What happened in Ikana is the most interesting mystery about Majora's Mask to me. We know the Giants told their people to call on them if they ever had problems or were in danger, yet the Giant of the Ikana region was never called, meaning he must have been trapped and sealed within the Stone Tower Temple ages ago for Ikana to have become a land of the dead so long before the other 3 regions got threatened in the present day/recent time period of the events of Majora's Mask.
The Happy Mask Salesman seems like his face is a mask and the shifting/glitching of his face is him switching masks. I have ideas about what is underneath the mask that I've wanted to make my own theories of for years but the burden of video editing has so far prevented me from doing that.

I look at it as the creator and the world aren’t one in the same, so when Majora is defeated the world can still live on. As for the giants, they could be another tool designed to level the playing field for Link. Majora wanted someone who could actually stand a chance against it, it saw things as: if there’s no chance of failure, there’s no satisfaction in winning.

  • @slateoffate9812
    @slateoffate9812 Рік тому

I think Termina could be part of Lorule, so the Triforce being inscribed could make sense.
I've made an AU where Link Between Worlds takes place long before Majora's Mask. In my AU, I think the Lorulian Sheikah Tribe became the Cult of Masks, similar to Hyrule's Dark Interlopers. The Cult of Masks at some point created Majora's Mask, and after that...
My memory of Hyrule's myriad races is faulty, so I could be wrong, but if the Cult of Masks became the Kingdom of Ikana?
Link's falling into Lorule has a similar color aesthetic to the Breaches, so there's that too.
And if Majora's Mask is the Lorulian equivalent to the Fused Shadow... Who then, was Majora? And who was Majora's counterpart?

If Stone Tower Temple is a location in Termina and Termina is a creation of Majora's Mask according to this theory, then how could the Happy Mask Salesman get to Stone Tower Temple if it's in a world that doesn't exist until after the Mask is freed as a result of the Happy Mask Salesman obtaining it from where it is sealed?
I agree the Mask is a product of ancient Hyleans and was sealed by the Sages, but it could not possibly have been sealed in a location that doesn't exist until after it's seal was broken and freed. I believe it is quite possible the mask was held in either the Forest Temple in Hyrule. For one, the Forest Temple is nearby the Lost Woods and is seen to be a well defendable location that has a hidden basement accessible by an elevator but nothing of note within this hidden area aside from the dungeons boss room which bears similar shape and iconography to that seen in the sage's domain. It is quite possible that as adult link was flung 7 years into the future, the Mask which lay sealed within the temple in this hidden basement was found by the Happy Mask Salesman and taken. As the Happy Mask Saleseman departed, venturing into the Lost Woods, the mask was stolen from him by the Skullkid and the now young Link resuming his childhood after defeating Ganondorf in the future runs into the Skullkid now donning Majora's Mask.

I believe a Garo war party were the ones who opened the doors via rituals to unleash darkness upon Ikana as they were fighting esch other for quite some time it seems. During war, factions might be able to pull amazing feats in order to best or beat their enemies. In this case, unbeknownst to the Ikana kingdom, a possible small war party of soldiers, shamans decided to break off from the fight and head towards the location were the Stone Tower temple sits at. There, they were able to break the seal and unleash the contained terrors that destroyed the kingdom and cursed it forever. Ever asked the question why there are still Garo soldiers lingering around the Ikana Kingdom?

    • @dayshallcomeagain
      @dayshallcomeagain 3 роки тому

Honestly, the Garo don't seem all that evil. In fact, they're pretty honorable, so I can't really see them as the ones responsible for the curse on Termina/Ikana. The Garo are described as spies from an enemy nation sent to investigate the recent dealings in Ikana, and I think after the fall of the kingdom, they were tasked by the Goddesses or the Four Giants to guard the stone tower and the light arrows found within from anyone unworthy of using them. There's a theory by hylian dan that suggests that the seal of majora's mask was broken not by the happy mask salesman, but by whoever built the stone tower, that they blasphemed the Goddesses and committed atrocities so terrible that the Goddesses themselves cursed them by flipping the tower upside down and sending them to the world where Majora's Mask was contained. They took the mask back with them, thus breaking the seal and dooming all of Ikana, and by extension, Termina.

Majora's Mask is the immediate story of Link after he wins against Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time... c'est tout.
Wind Waker is Link remaining as an adult after beating Ganondorf.
