  • Cross Fell has to be on every British hill walkers list. It may look bleak and featureless, but in this video I want to share some of it’s features to persuade you to enjoy this fabulous landscape.
If you have been there already, maybe many times, please share your experience and love of this colossus.
Apologies for the wind noise, it was relentless!
I am raising funds to buy an emergency beacon to help keep myself and the youngsters including Scouts I take out. Thanks! www.buymeacoff...
Bonus fact! : In ancient times it was known as "Fiends Fell" and believed to be the haunt of evil spirits. St August inevitable of Canterbury is said to have blessed the hill when he arrived here on his travels so it became known as Cross Fell in the Christian tradition, although it has been speculated that the fell became known as Cross Fell ("cross" meaning "angry") because of the evil spirits.

Never under estimate Cross Fell. I nearly lost my life near the top doing the Pennine way In July 1974 in heavy mist and torrential rain. It was fine when I set off from Dufton. Nice video..

As a complete Pennine nerd, CF is my favourite English mountain. Shape-wise it might not be able to match some of the Lakeland fells but it has many more interesting facets. It's always been kind to me too. I've done it five times down the years (including a wild-camp in 2021) and it has always given me a view. All hail Cross Fell! 😎

Cheers Dave. You brought back some fabulous memories when you walked around Gregs Hut. Many years ago a party of four of us were fast asleep in there during heavy winter snow. The roof in the main living area had been damaged and was open to the elements. In the dead of night we woken to see two 'shadows' standing over us with what looked like miners lamps. On the 4 of us waking up the two shadows slowly scurried back out of the door... Decades on we still talk about that evening! And how each individual reacted to what was happening in front of us! Haha.

@@Fellmandave1 - you got it! 1am. Lost on Cross Fell in a blizzard. We hadn't seen ANYONE on the hill all day so it was a bit of a shock to see these poor fellas to wander in. 100% thought it was a ghosts as we just woke to see them silently looking over us. Once they'd noticed the roof had gone they returned to the bedroom asking for help and we welcomed them back and fired the stove up for them. Poor buggers. Stay well mate.
