I prefer Judy Collins version of Both Sides Now. I found Joni's studio version of the song so dull. It was Judy's version that made Joni successful so her hating on it is hilarious especially since she herself was obviously inspired by Judy's singing on it.

They certainly don't. It was the lead single from Judy Collins' sixth studio album Wildflowers (1967), "Both Sides, Now" - written by Joni Mitchell - that gave her international prominence. Perhaps it's the other way around.

Joni almost always wrote and recorded her own material and rarely other people's songs; "Twisted" (1952, lyrics by Annie Ross from Hendricks, Lambert and Ross) was a rare one she did as the finale for her album "Court and Spark".

For anyone confused about the Swift comments from 9:20 onwards, there once was talk about doing a Joni Mitchell biopic (that never materialised), in the early 2010s, I think it was, and Taylor Swift was considered to play Joni. That's what Mitchell is commenting on here.

You made me lol, to be honest. I am presenting you with a learning opportunity to leverage language intelligently to craft a real argument, rather than ass-clowning yourself (like so many people do) by misusing capitalization, misspelling constantly or using poor grammar. If you did that, perhaps people would take your thoughts a bit more seriously. Just a thought.

It does disappoints me that Ms. Mitchell is so uncharitable. I agree with some of her opinions and disagree strongly about others. I would say, however, that when your soapbox is so high that your voice rings out globally showing a little class never hurts. Dolly has indeed made a career out of talent and class. Joni's talent is unimaginable to me, and while the caustic spirit of her evaluations won't tarnish her talent, her lack of generosity when speaking of others is sad. How people like to report the negative & omit the good. She also said she liked Dylan's direct lyrics which influenced her approach, the rest is true - he swiped whole obscure melodies & even the pattern or theme. I don't like Collin's bland version, Joni even criticised her own early rendition saying it needed a voice of experience praised & went backstage to compliment a less famous old black woman for her version, She also praised Buffet St Marie's versions of her early songs who sang some when less known. John Lennon was plain rude because all he could write were simple chants except the hypocrisy of Imagine, he was not shy of criticising others. Joni doesn't like meaningless pop, she hated Material Girl which she thought reflected the eighties; Madonna has a good voice but most are little more than vacant, sexed up catchy tunes - it is commercialism personified. It is worth noting that many comments she made were when she was recovering from a brain aneurysm, she was probably not familiar with Swift but may well have been referring to playing the complications of her own life & the crap thrown at her like being called El Lay for her active sex life which never happened to men. An innovator, she changed musical genres before Bowie. If she is bitter about anything it was not being compared to male singer songwriters on merit, early females like Joni & Carol King were pioneers of great songwriting. She did not make a list of dislikes, these are all separate anecdotes from interviews & she did not retract her statements about Dylan, she even spoke about enduring his bad breath during duets. Dylan has said she did not get the recognition due to her original style & talent, he said her honesty was a part of her integrity & what made her so perceptive. I hate petty videos like this.

The John Lennon thing was a weird misapprehension on her part, probably due to assuming that anyone who doesn't talk like a BBC announcer must be common. Of course, the UK has many many accents, and most Americans are only familiar with a few of them. Lennon was middle-class despite his 'unmarried mother' origin. He was an art school student who lived in relative comfort. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it does give some context for his experimentalism and iconoclasm.

Crosby, Stills, and Nash were considered folk music as well but they had tons of songs that were rock, pop, even some gospel. You get too hung up on labels. It's pretty obvious what my point was but really not obvious what yours was which is probably why no one else responded. How about explaining why you feel she is a genius? I did not reply in detail because your comment as both simplistic and misguided, in other words it did not justify a detailed reply. However, in view of your rudeness, here is something a bit more meaty to educate you. Joni transcended so called folk fairly early on and moved into far more sophisticated compositions employing jazz harmony and complex rhythms. Baez was basic by comparison and in no way built a catalogue as far reaching as that of Mitchell. Many feel Joni’s masterpiece is Hejira, but I particularly loved her live Shadows and Light material, not least because the band featured some of the greatest jazz musicians of modern times. She continued to develop her songwriting in subsequent albums like Mingus. Finally, as to your non point about Baez starting before her, my response is so what? Baez may have started sooner, but that does not mean other more talented artists can’t then follow and expand the genre as Mitchell did. Despite your childish insult I do know Mitchell’s music, in fact I own pretty well everything she has done, so no I didn’t call her a genius just because it was “hip”! You have to see in context of the times. They (musicians) were ALL like that. All somewhat self-centered and encouraged to be that way, by the media and the public. People clamored for their music and wanted to live that lifestyle. She knew she was a good lyricist and a good musician and wrote original material and she was part of the top tier. They were all competing and interacting with each other in a mostly friendly way. As for the child, she was unwed and from a small town, and in those days it was best to keep things hidden. There are some people who are compelled to become who they are, and Joni was one of them. She had to follow her path. When you're young it's easy to justify your decisions, it's as you get older that you start to question what you've done. I wish people weren't so judgemental about her personal life, it doesn't make her music less relevant. I think she was the best lyricist out there. Dylan was good but a little more abstract in style, but poetic nevertheless.

If you don't understand the clear difference, you shouldn't talk about what you don't properly understand. There are different opinions about it, there was a lawsuit by Clayton i think, there were court actions. in all news reporting on it, a clear point was made that Bob and Paul remained friends and the lawyers handled everything , and the court ruled that Bob used the pre-existing lyrics legally. Without refreshing my memory by googling it now, i'll say that i think the court saw that "who's gonna buy you ribbons when i'm gone" (paul's song) was based on public domain lyrics, "who's gonna buy you chickens when i'm gone," Paul didn't have a legal claim to originality. I don't know what the court said but to me, my opinion, is that if you compare Bob's song to Paul's, Bob has created a very original song, while Paul's song is resting heavily on the traditional song lyrics. I just see this as Bob Dylan's gift, he writes songs with originality that's beyond compare, he's famous for this and widely respected for it. There's no comparison between the 4 verses of Don't Think Twice it's all Right and Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone. If you think the two songs are comparable in originality and other qualities, i'm interested in hearing about it, but i followed the court case at the time and it wasn't that hard to come to the decision that won the case.

With respect to Dylan, Joni may have been referring to something that few know about, but matches her critique of him. She said he couldn't sing or play the guitar verry well. He wasn't a talented musician or an authentic person.....................Some of you may know the story about Dylan. He hung around in Greenwich Village, where all young people aspiring to 'make it' hung out at the time. Everyone that knew Dylan said he had no talent at all, couldn't sing, write or play the guitar worth listening to. They had the same view of Dylan that Joni had, not favorable. Then Dylan disappeared from the scene, nobody knew where he went, but he was gone, just like that. One year later he returned, but something had changed. Those that knew him best said they couldn't believe it. He was completely different musically, as if a miracle had taken place. They were all lost to understand how he became so good in just one year. One of the guys said nobody could improve that much in only a year, and yet he did just that. But how?
Dylan himself told the story, he explained what happened. It's not a nice story, in fact I won't listen to anything he was associated with after I heard his story. The bottom line is that he made an agreement, the kind of thing we hear many others talk about and/or admit to having done these days. He made a deal with the devil. Although it sounds fictional and ridiculous, it's very real. The deal goes like this; a meeting takes place, the aspiring star is told to show up at a particular place at a given time. I don't know who represents the devil at the meeting. A document/contract is presented and is read by the 'applicant'. A trade-off is proposed, and either accepted or rejected. It has to be signed, like any other official contract.
The trade is a guarantee for the artist, to be provided with the best of gigs in the best of places, as much work as he wants and for an indefinite period. The artist is also guaranteed fame and fortune, all anyone could ask for and whatever vice the person may have, be it women, drugs, or anything other, will be in provided and in plentiful supply for the artist. For these things the artist has to sign the contract, which includes a promise to devote himself to the devil, and a vow to denounce Jesus Christ. There might be more to this, I may have some details wrong, but this is the gist of the agreement. I've seen many of the 'stars' of today admit and describe the same thing that Dylan signed up for. it's hard to imagine that anyone would accept that which will cost the soul of the artist.

what a superb way to put it. My mom always told me to be careful about trying to look better by downgrading others. Tried to follow that, too bad Joni did not. Talented, yes, but an out of control ego, probably should have kept all this to herself. Wonder how she would critique her voice vs David Crosby's, before he ruined his with drugs, age? If honest, she would say, "way short". Gene Clark, too, for that matter. But then, she and BD are really songwriters first, performers second. She seems to have forgotten that truth.

I found it ironic that she says Dylan is a plagiarist and a fake. Yet she says it was through him that she learned she could write about anything. When I first heard Dylan it was unlike anything I had heard before. All artists are to some extent plagiarists, but it is not what you borrow it is how you use it in a new way and Dylan certainly did that and she learned from that. I love the work of Joni Mitchel and listen to her more than I listen to Dylan these days but Dylan is the more important artist.

Her comment about realising she could get away with singing about anything from Dylan was clearly a back-handed compliment. She was really saying that he could write songs about any old gibberish which had very little substance at times.
Go and listen (and listen properly) to Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons (When I'm Gone) by Paul Clayton and then listen to Dylan's Don't Think Twice it's Alright. The nerve to steal a song so blatantly is actually shocking to me.

Can you "deal with" what they think? what does it mean to deal with? i think it means whether you can or can't tolerate respectfully listening to a belief that's different from yours. it's just sport, it's internet play, social media, people exchanging opinions. it seems healthy to me, compared to holding what you believe inside with no chance to express it.

No she's pretty nasty sometimes, especially since she got older and there's a lot of "get off my lawn" to it as well. I'd be the first person to tell you how talented she is though but being humble was never one of her strengths. I can't think of any songwriter who has more well written songs than Dylan and Working Class Hero is one fantastic song and John's work with the Beatles speaks for itself. Madonna doesn't really do much for me talent wise but being nasty to someone who covered your song and brought it some well known attention is a bit silly and it's not a bad cover at all.
