When I went to Japan for the first time last year the Western Village was one of my first stops. Because naturally, the first thing you'd do in a foreign country is breaking and entering. And now re-watching the way from the train station, you having the exact same thoughts as I had, is just a very strange experience. But I've been sitting in the village for hours under the falling sakura, reading a book and not even thinking about monkeys :D

lots of smaller towns in europe dont have pavements either, you just get to walk awkwardly on the side of the road, or if youre lucky, there's a tiny bit of paved sidewalk or mud ditch just next to the road for you to walk on

I’m not sure if this is for show, but animals sense your anxiety, just like humans. You make them the alpha. Face them, raise your voice and speak in an assertive and controlled manner, Stand tall, use clothing and accessories to enlarge your profile. Make yourself look confident and in control. Never run. This works on grizzlies. I’m sure it would work on a lone monkey. Really enjoy your content. Safe travels
Also try not to show your teeth or maintain eye contact for too long because the monkey might think you’re challenging them to fight.

Yes, make yourself look as big as possible. Even with grizzlies. This comment I made was for our scared traveler. It annoys me that out of all the advice I gave him, there are people that pick one thing out of what I said to gripe on. I live, hunt, camp and fish with brown bears. I know animals and all I wanted to do was give him advice from my experience. Go ahead and read what NPS says about it. Maybe one day you’ll visit Alaska and experience one on one encounters with grizzlies as well

Just as a rule of thumb: When an animal sees you running from them they see you as easy meat. Same with people. Stand your ground, make yourself bigger and raise your voice but don't do it like a crazy person. You may retreat slowly backwards while facing towards the animal.
