  • Police checkpoints, a closed border crossing, broken down bike, terrible soviet roads, and few cheeky rain storms to top it all off. This was one of the hardest days of travel ever. But it's still worth it. Cause we're living the dream. Thank you guys so much for coming along and supporting the journey.

    This video touched me.
    I'm from the UK and lived in Kyiv from July 2020 until the big war started, when I had to leave. I love Ukraine and its people more than anywhere else in the world, and like you said I also felt at peace there.
    I've been back several times since the war started, and weirdly enough, despite bombs falling 700m from me in Kyiv and constant air raid alerts, the feeling of peace I feel there remains❤

      After having met Ukranians who have spread into Europe since after the war, it has made me want to visit Ukraine after. They've all been more than a bit wild like in this video, but very nice. I'm expecting some slavic/ex-Soviet traits to remain, like certain incivilities I've seen in countries that believe themselves to be more "civilized" like Czech, but I actually can't even imagine anyone can act worse than Czechs so I'll be ready for whatever.

    Hey there, I don't know if anyone explained this in the comments already or not, but I am from Ukraine and I think I know what this Uman hotel situation is all about. So you just happened to come to the town of Uman when there is an annual pilgrimage to one of the very respected rabbi among the hassidic jews. He is buried in that town and there are hundreds if not thousands of Hassidic jews coming there at this time of the year every year, even when there's war. There are so many people flooding the town that the police has to make sure its all safe for them and everyone else. That's why there might've been some restrictions, especially at the time of another escalation. So that is one crazy coincidence that you decided to go there exactly when this hassidic event happens =)

    I'm sorry I'm late by over half a year, but what happened to u near Uman was related to Jewish New Year. Around this time (September-October), thousands of hassidic jews come to Uman as pilgrims. That's probably why only jews r allowed in the city during this time.

    Okay, so the Jew thing may seem weird, I will try to explain it.
    Uman is a place of pilgrimage for Hasid Jews. Every year they come during the last days of Septermber/early November to the grave of Reb Nachman of Bratslav to celebrate the beginning of a new year (Rosh HaShanah, Jewish New Year). They came there during Covid, too, although they were adviced by our and Israel government not to. Literally nothing can stop them, not even the war.
    During this event, 20 000 of Hasids gather in one small town, around one holy place. As you can imagine, this density of people is perfect for russian missile strike, provocations and chaos. In order to make this event go as smoothly as possible, during Rosh HaShanah of 2022 no one was allowed to enter Uman except for the pilgrims, journalists and locals. Everyone was searched and checked on block posts in order to not let in people with explosives, guns, etc. And possibly to save the non-Jewish civillians from the risk of bombing. The place was very high-risk. That's why they asked if you were Jewish and directed you away from the site.
    Basically, the rule was "if you don't Need to be there, don't be there. It is safer for you because you can never know what target russians will choose next."

    • @raiden72
      @raiden72 5 місяців тому

      That's kind of hilarious, because the reason Russia stated for invading Ukraine was to "de-nazify" the country.
      You would think that a country run by Nazis is not a place where 20,000 Jews would come to, no?
