This (unmonetized) video is a special - and extended - compile of clips which were featured on the official The Police Facebook page. They come from a proof of concept documentary I made with the support and participation of Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. Of course, whilst I have created a feature which does work in and of itself, I still would not consider it complete without having a recorded interview with Sting, inviting him to share some of his reflections on the strange and surreal time that The Police had in the early 1980's as they became the most popular rock band in the world. Sadly, The Police have never been documented in a balanced or particularly interesting way with all three members being part of the narrative. Stewart and Andy's films are great, but they are just that - Stewart and Andy's films, told from their own fascinating but singular points of view. Previous specials - from VH1's "Behind the Music" to the oddly selective "Outlandos to Synchronicities" - double down on the cartoonish "they hated each other" myth, serving as little more than unimaginatively presented, superficial rock profiles. I believe that a documentary about The Police should be made with a bit more integrity, creativity and care, that it should be scored with their music (not just peppered with "the hits" in between talking head bits), weaving a spell of dream-like retrospection which transcends "nostalgia". It should be as inspired and synergistic as Sting, Andy and Stewart proved to be between 1977 and 1984.
This video and the feature it comes from represents a lot of work, time and love. Whilst you are welcome to share the original link, if I see any part of this reproduced on a different youtube channel, the responsible user can expect to get a copyright strike.
