It does drive home the fact that he is by no means an idiot. He knows that Goten doesnt know him and might need time to get to know him first. One of the best but also one of the most overlooked demonstrations of Goku being a great father. That one line.

Until cell saga and even in GT Goku was not shown as an idiot, just too innocent and goofy factor was added as jokes but in Dragon Ball Super he is turned into a guy with full fledged down syndrome and that too not a good kind that makes him a genius but simply dumb.

Growing up, I watch this amazing anime. I never had an actual dad growing up, but goku gave me that since of what is like to have someone who will do anything for his family, even when he's dead. Goku has so many winning qualities a grown man can instill in himself
Crazy you mention this I never actually realized but I to had a similar situation to yours and this show was my world growing up now I have my own son and it’s just me and him all the time and I realize I learned how to be a good father from watching goku do anything for his family and friends. This show was a master piece I hope if they continue they can keep the legends vision going.

My dad died earlier this year and seeing this, I wish I could talk to him again. Not a day goes by I dont remember what he taught me and the life lessons that came with that. I remember our last 1 on 1 talk. It makes me cry everytime I think about it.
