From Gary Hensley’s California ranch, you can see beautiful views of Sacramento and Napa Valley.
Hills and 5 acres of grass surround his home, and while he likes the challenges of figuring out how to manage this type of property, with all its beauty, comes risk.
Summers are dry, and winds are strong in California, making this year’s wildfires stronger than ever. And Gary had the third-largest wildfire in recorded state history knocking on his doorstep.
Gary says wildfires are something you have to prepare for but never think will happen.
He and most homeowners in California have learned how to create defensible space around their homes and buildings to protect it in the event of a wildfire. This means reducing the amount of combustible material surrounding the house and in its place using fire-resistant materials like concrete, swimming pools, cement board, and more.
He’s very glad he prepared for this fire pro-actively with his Ventrac.
This is the first year he has been able to mow 100% of his property because of his Ventrac 4500’s slope capabilities. Doing things like mowing the grass surrounding the property reduces fuel for the fires and keeps their flames more manageable.
The fires, which were all started by lightning strikes in the area, quickly spread to be 50-60 miles wide, and Gary’s small neighborhood prepared to evacuate.
He believes that his ability to mow all of his land helped establish defensible space around his home and kept the fire from burning too hot. Where the Hensley’s property did burn, it was at a much lower intensity and much lower height.
They feel humbled and blessed to have their home remain untouched from the flames. Aside from the perimeter fencing, the damage was minimal, and Gary is hopeful that the grass will reseed and grow back in the spring.
Going forward, Gary will continue to maintain his property with meticulous care.
He wants to help out his neighbors, who don’t have the means to maintain their property as well.
And thirdly, he would like to look at how the Ventrac Power Rake can help create a firebreak by taking the grass down to the dirt level.
Ventrac provided the right tool to help manage the fire and clearance needed to establish defensible space around his home. And Gary has hope going forward that being proactive about fire abatement with his Ventrac will keep the fire’s damage at a minimum again.

Put in strategic firebreaks but call them bike trails. People love bike trails.
But the millionaires don’t want to see hippies on bikes.
Yes Scott. I mean Elba. 😋
And allow motorbikes too. We'll personally go out and help keep them maintained.
@@PapaWheelie1 I'm a bicyclist and poor... I don't want to see hippies on bikes! Lol.
That's the kind of management Trump is talking about! Great idea!
We should have never stopped building moats around our castles. Filled with water and alligators. That should help with fires.
You call five acres a ranch, we call that here in Kansas a good grain bin location
lol yep! same in eastern Washington (the state).
Back at home in Canada.." Its a garden or veggie patch"... when he said Ranch I nearly fell off my chair
In commifornia though 5 acres costs the same as a “ranch”
Lol. In Texas that's a back yard.
@@itsonvideo If that isn't the truest shit in these comments...
Keeping grass low is certainly key, but building fire breaks is what stops the advance.
True most of the time. But if fire is wind driven, as has been the case with most of the destructive fires on the west coast of the US recently, a fire break will not necessarily help you at all. Embers can be blown a half a mile easily and start a new fire. If your house is in the path of a wildfire, about the only thing that will most likely prevent it burning is if ALL exterior materials (roof, siding, window frames) are all made of non-flammable material, and if the window glass is also the more fire-resistant type. Your fire break will not help you in 15+ mile an hour winds.
He did that in a way...he had very low grass all around his house.
@Paul Simonson Yes...did you miss the word "easily" in my post?
@@AFNacapella Most of the forests have tons of logging trails and roads, but forest fires this year have been blown by winds through the 200' tall trees, sending embers that are jumping streams, highways, parking lots like they are nothing it's totally crazy with the high winds this year.
especially not on some wanna be tractor such as ventrac. you need something a lot bigger, heavier, and operators that have experience. you know the cats that are in fireline these days have added help in drones and even radio contact such as cell phones, but even now and way more before the challenge of cutting firebreaks in active fires in rugged terrain is especially dangerous in that they don't know what's up ahead, and if they're running from a front line that will kill them if it overtakes their run for it, and what happens is going off of a mountain they can get to a point of rock verticals, that they have to go off of, or die. can you imagine that in rock. if you're going to get into free fall you have a little hope if you know what you're doing. the machines were up there in weight something close to 100 tons. and you're only hope to not landing upside down (which if you do, you die, because you can't continue your way out, )so without hesitation, fire is behind you and approaching, you come to the edge of a solid rock vertical you squarely straight off of it and just before you go you hoist the dozer blade as high as it goes with the intensions of the machine landing right on it's nose, and if the dozer blade is in the highest point, it keeps the machine from rolling over. most operators without experience would do the opposite. in rock they're like on ice skates foreword or sideways. and once you build up speed, like in freefall, you're hopes are limited.
This may be only an advertisement but it touched my heart. Thank God there are companies with the foresight to make things at an affordable price to help people prevent losing what's most precious to them. Hats off to Ventrac!
It’s all about combustible fuels. Good work. This is exactly why we need to thin our forests as well as grasses and brush.
🤣🤣🤣 why don't you go get a rake and rake the forest floor? Such a dumb Comment
ImpsMyPimp as someone who works with environmentalists to thin forests I struggle to see why my experienced and informed comment is dumb.
@@TheNemosdaddy It's not actually wrong, just poorly stated. You gotta allow ways to get dry, low-laying fuel out of them or it's tinder that takes the whole place up... the western US, much of the land burned over in various places 20-30 years and regenerated naturally... our forests are long overdue for some controlled removal of such tinder stuff...
@@russvaagen3004 Maybe because he's a pimp? Forest management is a lost art in California. It would do well to go back to manage the forest!
Ken Hurley regardless of political views, managing forests on federal lands should be done. And it can be done in a responsible way that improves the environment and help rural communities.
As he talks about mowing and reducing the available fuel to a short layer on the ground to reduce fire height and intensity this is exactly what good forest management includes. Taking the available fuel and reducing it down.
Oh so you mean land/ forest management is a good thing....
These tree huggers will never learn. Burns every year yet won't pick up a stick or cut a fire break.
It's Trump's fault somewhere.......LOL
Right. Good ole newscum wants us to burn.
No. Managing your land responsibly is a BAD thing.
Can ya just imagine that...
Proactive forest management is the answer, if only people would listen.
Problem is that 98% of the public forests in California are controlled by the Federal government and they have consistently refused to do anything for years. This year was even worse as the head of the USFS ordered that all fires, even small ones that were zero threat to people, be aggressively controlled - meaning that 1) fuel is growing for other fires 2) by the end of August, crews were already stretched & exhausted. Not good - but that's what you get with a bunch of clueless people in charge....
@@ckm-mkc ca makes it hard for the us forest service from doing their job which is finally getting through. el dorado national forest is doing fuel reduction through cutting down trees. national forest service allows the burn to continue. the august complex fire up north is that big for a reason. they allow it to burn. they arent even fighting they are only protecting communities and allowing it to burn.
It's called entitlement it don't apply to California people
This guys is doing exactly what needs to happen. 30 years experience in the forest management side of things. This doesn't happen over night. It is a way of life if you live in a fire landscape.
@@ckm-mkc I think there are two prongs to this. Zero tolerance in the midst of fire season and controlled burns off season to get the fuel load down.
All the roots from the grass are still there in the ground, the grass will come back with a vengeance.
Naturally. And so he will keep it mowed.
The native indians used to purposely burn off the grass and underlying brush. Made for better grasslands the following year and better controlled potential raging wildfires.
@@davecrable1356 yes, but the shitty politicians in california have changed everything and now we're seeing the results
@@bigchungus920 I wasn't going to say it, but you're absolutely right. I've heard stories (not sure of accuracy) of some wooded area duff layers up to 10 feet deep. Talk about fuel for the fire 🔥
I've never seen that country out there boy its beautiful when it's green
With the help of the Ventrac system your due diligence to maintain the property has save you a lot of grief, memories, and possibly others from a much worse condition by slowing down the spread of the fire the way it did. You will be amazed how the grass should come back to life with a renewed vigor.
Thank you for sharing your story with us today, very inspirational....
Goats. Your best friend in hilly terrain and ravines. Nice machine, looks fun.
Or Bison.
They have been talking about that in California at least since the 70s (as I was quite young then) , they said it would be cheaper and more efficient to herd / farm goats than to spend the money and fight fires .But as for as I know nothing ever became of it .
They use goats in Europe to control the vegetation with great success.
Every time I bring up goats, everyone just laughs at me... anytime I bring up forest management, they either change the subject or look at me confused.
I've driven through posted "logging roads" by the north complex fires and I saw no evidence of logging... just trees packed so close my medium to small dog would have trouble navigating.
@@dustinthewind3925 The state let populars reseed in northern Michigan after they took the pine trees off , a jack Russell or a dachshund might have made it thru but that's about it , I know exactly what you are speaking of , I've tried to deer hunt in that obscene mess . It takes about 20yrs for that mess to start to straighten itself out .
"Great is thy faithfulness". Lovely hymn instrumental in the start. Turn to God, America.
I have always believed that wildfire management is controlling the growth in wooded and grass field areas. Ventrac is a great solution for this work. Thank God for Ventrac.
Thanks for sharing this video! Felix
A sprinkler system along the fence line with Rain Birds works really well... you can tap your Pool water if and when needed to feed the system or a couple big black water tanks with Rain water works fine too... I did that..... I rest well knowing no fire will crawl along on the ground and get past the wet line I can lay down.
So using logic and common sense your saying the fires are not because of global warming but because of the lack of prescribed burns and underbrush management. Makes perfect sense thanks!
agree, not global warming, most are started by Trump Cucks/cultists with incendiary devices
Wrong - what has made this fire season even worse is that the average temperature in the Western US is up 5 degrees over the median since records were collected. This means that everything is extremely dry and that weather patterns have changed. The result was a severe lightning storm, the worst in 50 years, that ignited 7000 fires. And it's not just California, it's true all over the Western US.
It’s hotter and drier than it has been in recorded history. Defensible space is what everyone needs. Literally and figuratively.
I applaud you for your determination and foresight. I hope now the the rest of California people and government have learned about fire breaks and planned logging. People like you are an example to all. Super add and initiative. Tom
The cinematography in this video is incredible, great vid guys
Nice video. Nice prep prior to the fire. It's to bad that over ½ of the people with negative comments have no idea about California weather, growing conditions or local regulations. Thank you for a good video that reported your situation well.
This guy is truly a gem. You can obviously tell that he has pride in what he has. No matter how many acres he has, he's proud of what he has worked all of his life for. It's his & he educated himself on how to prevent devastation in the future on his land. He can now take his knowledge and educate his friends, family & neighbors on how to prevent fires & losing everything these people have. He took it into his own hands to solve the problems. Not wait for the state of CA or the government to hopefully, maybe one day that they'll come up with a plan. Which we all know will never happen! This guy needs to be protected at all costs bc the future generations don't look to promising. They all have cell phones up their asses & are oblivious to what's going on in the world.
Good job saving your place. You have done what most people refuse to do. Clean up around your house, keep trees to a small volume, keep grass mowed. We pray for all of you that have been in the midst of the wildfire.
I've live in bushfire (wildfire) prone areas in Australia. Environmental/Fuel management is -the- best way to manage and mitigate disasters - goats are excellent for this purpose.
Well done Gary!
Well done Ventrac!
Your kindness is bringing me to tears.
I am literally heartbroken for those who have lost their homes and at the destruction of the land there out west. You are sharing what I have been telling folks for years, that we need to practice environmentalism through management and stewardship NOT abandonment. Kudos to Ventrac for sharing this story. My hope is that it will convince people that proper management and stewardship are how we properly take care of our land not by leaving it "all-natural" and overgrown. 👍
A great testimony to Ventrac! The quality if this production is top notch. Thank you.
FWIW here in Australia, specifically the state of Western Australia, 3x the size of Texas, mineral earth fire breaks are the go-to strategy since there's not much water around. The power rake would be an awesome tool to cut them in when needed for these grass fires. | I've previously sent a suggestion to Ventrac that they develop a fire fighting kit where you might have a hose nozzle aimed mechanically or hydraulically spraying water from a belt-driven water pump with a towed or 3 point hitch mounted water tank. Would keep the operator safe and stable on the tractor and not out on the ground and also able to move about as needed safely. (maybe have a conversion kit for weed spraying to make it multi-use, ie replace the water nozzle with spray arms) 👍😀
@peter d The whole world gets high winds ;-) It's all about having several lines of defence. If you have enough fire breaks you may be able to keep the ember attacks under control with say a Ventrac and a fire fighting kit. It's getting more common for houses in fire-prone areas here to have sprinkler systems on them but in the end, it may be that you just have evacuate while you still can and rely on your home insurance to build you a new house.
You can watch Wrangler Star on your own water pump for fires.
There's a company up in Chico, CA that makes fire-fighting rigs for in truck beds, UTVs and on trailers, might be a good start - www.qtacfire.com/fire-utv-atv-skids/qtac-40s

@@bobwellman9717 Ever heard of Auto Correct? I know what his channel is, I watched it for years. Bye now.
The work you did paid dividends for sure. I witnessed 30 foot flames sweep across semiarid grasslands in Idaho. I could not believe how high the flames from dry grass could become. I'm glad you were able to control the fuel surrounding your home. Your neighbors will really appreciate your help in the future.
Thank you sir for sharing your story with Ventrac and thank you to the Ventrac employee that went out for the interview. The music.....ehhhh...

Amazing what mankind can do with the right tools and ideas.
Great story! Here in New Jersey they burn the woods regularly to prevent big fires. Can't begin to imagine what it feels like with the fires this year throughout the west coast. Great machine! Stay safe my friend!
Gary you and your family are truly blessed. Great job working the land and I loved the opening music, great is His faithfulness indeed!
Thank you for sharing your story Gary. I strongly support your opinion that mowing made a difference. I believe the fuels need to be as close to the dirt as possible.
In areas that can support discing/tilling, especially along roadways, driveways, and structures create that break in fuel continuity (separation).
Keep preaching the message, I believe we can make a difference.
Thank you!

I hope these neighbors get together & buy some hay, seeds & water troughs for the wildlife that managed to survive.
NICE JOB! Your ins company should be so thankful
GOD bless you all. All the best to California. From Canada.
Just watched an ad for a tractor & I have no land. Glad the home owner didn’t lose their home
A horrifying nightmare...God please save our state and bless America.
These videos are great. I love how Ventrac shows all the different ways there products can help. I never would have thought a Ventrac could fight against wild fires. I can only imagine how many people in the same situation of this man now consider the value of a Ventrac and get one for themselves.
Now if only the tree hugging liberal Sierra club would allow proper forestry management these fires wouldn't be so destructive. This man just provided a well done video on why management is so important.
How do the SIERRA Club lawyers SLEEP at night!!!!
Gday mate, well done on being proactive and the preparation. Also, which may help is when you mow, use a catcher and burn it in the cooler periods. Also, have a look at constructions for the house roofing referred to as a "Halo". Some Australian website might be able to help you with this. But long story short, copper/steel piping fitted onto gutters, small pin holes all along them, and connected to a main water source & pump to prevent spot fires on your home boundary. Even though concrete is a good idea, cooling will help. Just a helping thought bud. Stay safe and hope you all recover quickly.

Too bad the forestry department in California didn't do this !
Cutting grass in the woods? There is no tall grass at all in wooded areas
@JAG the forestry is responsible for maintaining the forest.
When they dont the results are often deadly. Eco freaks have been blocking all of the maintenance and logging needed to maintain fire breaks.
Yes its his property but thats not where the fire came from.
It encroached his property.
As the result of a wildfire.
A wildfire that spread and devastated millions of acres of forest and private property due to the amount of fuel it had and the lack of maintenance that was blocked by eco freaks.
@@highrider9168 Eco freaks don't block it. Lack of funding for forestry management services is what actually blocks it. Also, 57% of california wildland isnt even owned by california, its owned by the federal government, so california CANT manage that land, even if it had the money to. There is way more to this than "eco freaks..."

keep brush down to the ground too.
Love this company and this machine.
A whole 5 acre ranch?
How many tiny head of cattle can you handle on that huge operation?
Good job, Next spring the grass will be so Green!
Good management of anything brings good results. Good job. Keep the investigation on how to mitigate fire damage. Firw is a triangle :
1- oxigen
2-combusting material
3- igniter.
Eliminate one of them and fire stop.

You have no idea what you are talking about son.
Happy that your house was saved
Great commentary and how versatile Ventrac can be for those willing to invest in outstanding equipment!
Cute little tractor and looks like it handles terrain well. Vaca area was scrub oak savannah, should have been fairly easy to avoid the horrors of high fuel load chaparral and forest but being prepared is always the way to go.
@Ventrac What an awesome video showing how a machine can impact a community and even humanity. Praying for those affected by these wildfires... Just really hard to see all of that destruction and the wildlife impacted. Glad this man and his home were spared.
I love my 4500z, one of the most useful and fun tools on our farm (and by our videos; others feel the same way!) Not gonna lie; this video made me have power rake and power bucket envy. Just wondering how that power rake would work on a half mile long gravel driveway...

Sir you are a wise wise man indeed. Sorry for the people that lost homes. I would have subcontracted companies that cut huge 500 feet timber streets in grids all across the states in order to have fire breaks. When companies fail to comply, simply terminate contract and give to others.
Wildfires destroyed so many houses this round

I Work On A Golf Course And I Drive A Ventrac With The Mower Deck And We Cut Our Lake Banks With It And They Are Sometimes Quite Steep, Only Two Of Us Really Use It Cause Most Of The Others Get Nervous On The Steep Lakes Banks Around The Greens, But I Usually Cut In Reverse Cause I Feel Its Much Easier, Cause It Tends To Slide Less And For Me It Has Better Traction In Reverse , , But I Won't Lie , I've Slipped Into Some Bad Spots, And One Real Bad Sinkhole With It Because Of The Erosion On The Lakes , But I Really Like Mowing With The Ventrac, We Also Use A Blower Attachment To Blow Leaves Off The Fairways , Nice Piece Of Equipment.
2020 has been one year I can’t wait to be over. I’m terminally ill and this year just breaks my heart.
Excellent job and take care of your neighbors that what we do
Here’s the FUNNY THING ABOUT FIRES AND CA.
I’m a contractor and do work for several people and after 2017 fires the city shows up etc and tells homeowner they need to keep up on property. No dead trees and so on.
On tv. Don’t mow before this time. Pick up leaves a long list. You can even be fined.
Now the kicker. 1 customer likes near a lake and walks around it every day. He asked me to walk so I did. As walking a tree crew was cutting a tree that was in the paths way. They cut it and pushed it to the side. When asked why. They told me they were told ONLY to push it to the side.
Now our government here in ca says oh yes forest Mgt needs to be way better. In 2017 he promised to start doing this.
Now 2020. Nothing.
Climate change. Ya we all affect it.
How in the hell do you expect people to keep up on there yards when you don’t.
Newsom says you learn and take example from you leaders.
He gets on tv and says. Climate change while people’s houses are burning down.
Idea. Shut up. Clean the forest up. Put roads in. Who cares about tree huggers.
High tech will affect climate way before we do.
But hell cant wait for 2035. All electric cars and PGE shuts power off cuz wind.
More funny ca says no nuke plants etc. but most power comes from outside state from??? No need to answer.
Get the tiller attachment or pull-behind disc or plow to make a fire break that the fire cannot cross. Use a regular garden tiller to get into the hard-to-reach places. Burning is good for the ground. you want to do controlled Burns every so often helps renew the ground
Thank God. Good work! Smart man for thinking ahead❤️❤️
They need to maintain the forest and fields. Awesome job!
Yep we're on our own. Gotta protect ourselves and our properties bc goodness knows our officials won't
I literally just drove by his place today. I grew up in that area and currently have family evacuated in Santa Rosa. Extended family not far from this area also have a house due to 5 acres of mowed to stubble grass. Lots of exposed dirt is the only way to stop these wild fires. Machines like Ventrac are a must in CA and honestly we need more advancements in manned and unmanned brush equipment that can compete with the string trimmer labor.
Being on a hill like that, a smarter deal would be to put in water sprinklers. I used them on my 30+ acres and am the only 3 houses that were completely out of harms way. I don't understand why people don't do this in all of the areas.
I have them on roof tops of both barns and 3 houses. Pastures are also protected with them. I couldn't graze my horses on a burnt field.
Really reduces insurance costs also.
That tractor is worth its weight in gold. Best Buy of 2019.
Great is thy faithfulness. ....always..
We here in Australia understand how savage bushfires can be so we feel for our American Mates when your bushfire season is on.
Fabulous machine put the good work called be prepared prepare for the worst hope for the best
The opening music is fitting. Great is Thy Faithfulness.
It’s great I just looked in to this machine for my clearing company
This is a good effort. But the main reason that houses burn in wildfires is due to flying embers (firebrands) that can land on houses that are even miles ahead of the fire and set them on fire.
Roofs made of wooden shingles not a help.
@@nigelmchugh5541 Totally agree. I believe either the city of LA or LA County does not allow homeowners to install new wooden shake roofs. Existing ones are grandfathered, though.
Power rakes are cool implements. But a harrow is a lot cheaper and can achieve similar results. Also faster in an urgent situation and you can even pull it behind your truck or a matched pair of mules.
Wow,,,, what a video. After doing so much work after the fire,,, I'd suggest checking/changing the air filter and possible oil and filter to keep the inside of the engine clean.
Please do a follow up video of your area after some rain has fallen. If I lived in this type of area I'd purchase a Ventrac. Well worth the investment.
You would be amazed, the area that is charred will end up growing better than areas that didn't burn.
Beautiful property!
My 1949 wide track Caterpillar D2 does pretty good on cutting fire breaks too.
Ventrac sales just doubled!!!!!
I bet money this guy got one awesome discount on his Tractor 🚜
I believe the Reagan Library uses land management to control fires getting close to the library. It worked the last time there were fires in the area!
Always disk your land in summer . Much saver then mowing. The mower will leave min 1” dry grass “ fuel for fire” disk, disk people
Good job saving your property
Great testimonial on the tractor . Maybe time to install tall lightening rods ?
This guy is smart, but this is why he owns a ranch. Glad you were able to save your ranch.
Wow, who knew?!?! Preparation helps mitigate wildfires?! You might want to share that tidbit with your politicians.
Great tool for the job Fuel Mgt is the key get rid of ladder fuel
In California and Oregon land management is key. And they don't even allow people to collect rainwater above a certain amount. I would have water stashed all over my property.
Why didn’t he make a firebreak with a disc or tiller also?
Imagine if the State took as good care of thier forest properties like this guy.. There wouldn't be nearly as many wildfires!
I would recommend a skid steer loader a brush grinder rake grapple and buckets
Fire mitigation through land management. What a novel idea! (Please note preceding statement is dripping with sarcasm for those sarcastically challenged)
"Gary, the fire is headed our way! Can I borrow your tractor to mow my field?" "No!"

So sorry to see all the devastation. Wanna be friends
So I’ve got the perfect solution on how to deal with forest fires or I should say how you’ll never need to deal with them again buuut still enjoy beautiful woodland best in the world.
Move to Scotland 😂😂 in all honesty we don’t know how lucky we are albeit it’s a wet country but still we get the scenery and such without any draw backs ( it’s wet a lot ) heart really goes out to people stuck in places were They are not allowed to do anything to manage their woodland.
We have control burns for Heather and peatmoss vegetation it’s down to the individual how they do it usually an acre at a time with a fire kettle and kerosene then let it burn out. Works wonders
Maybe your firebreaks could also help to create a terraced effect on the hill. Great choice of machinery!
Don't need one myself, but if I had some acreage, I would certainly highly consider a Ventrac. I hope the Ventrac company has compensated Mr. Hensley by giving him whatever additional accessories he needs to keep his property safe with the Ventrac. For additional real-world use of the Ventrac, watch You Tuber 'Stoney Ridge Farmer'.
So preemptive burnings/cuttings actually work? Wowie I had no idea
.....
Five acres isn't a ranch......that's my front yard here in the midwest.
Plus the "tractor" is a lawnmower however its great to see someone doing something to help themselves protect their home. Fires only burn where they have fuel, they need to clean up all that dead stuff.
Never said anything to take away from him protecting his home......commented on calling five acres a Ranch.
Ventrac is an awesome product
