This is the exact situation I'm in right now. I recently graduated with a marketing major and work a corporate job. I dread going to work every single day and look for a way out constantly. I was originally a pre-med major and struggled with chemistry, so I thought I wasn't smart enough and decided to switch paths. Recently, I've come to the realization that I am smart enough and shouldn't be afraid to follow this path. I decided to go back to school 2 days ago and I'm super excited that I came across this video. I know that I made the right choice after seeing this.

Loved what you said what you said about "not being smart enough". I was a tennis player in college, did okay in classes... was more focused on sport/ girls/ frat life. Never thought I'd be "smart enough" to go into the medical field. After college I worked a real job, then realized this could be the rest of my life. Having that experience of a real job was the most humbling thing that could have ever happened to me. I decided to go back to school, with a crazy goal to become doctor. Did an hour commute to a bankrupt city to take my biology prerequisites for dental school. The school was in a ghetto location (you could see needles on the ground of the school parking lot). People laughed at me for being the "old guy" in the class, but the struggle made the journey so much better. I'm 1 year out from graduating dental school (my dream school), and hope to go to residency afterwards!

Now in working on a bachelor's in biology and plan to either go to med school or PA program. people laughed at first, then realized I was 10-20x smarter than them. I was average when I was in high school, but compared to this latest generation of college students I feel like a genius. I love this! I originally went to school to be an MA where I unfortunately didn’t even try in school. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I figured going to school to be an MA to get a job once finishing would be good. Once I graduated i took a job in billing at a private Ophthalmologist office where I had interned during school. It was a job and everyone was awesome but I disliked what I was doing and I knew I didn’t want to do this forever. Fast forward 4 years and I’m currently a Scribe in Pulmonary, learning a lot from the 3 Physicians I work with and getting ready to go back to school this fall for Premed. I couldn’t be more excited and I’m counting down for school this fall. I know it’s going to be a lot of work but I’m genuinely excited I finally know what I want to do.

Wow your story is inspiring and sounds so much like mine (except I'm not a doctor yet!). I'm 23, I graduated uni in 2019, got a corporate job and could feel my will to live leave me a bit more every day. It wasn't rewarding on a human level, I felt I had no purpose and wasn't truly helping anyone. I quit after a couple years and am now back in uni studying trying to pass exams to get into med school by the end of the year. What I learned throughout my internships and my full time job experience is that you can be in the most exciting cities in the world, have the best colleagues, and earn a lot of money, nothing is more important than feeling useful and bringing value to your community. I'm back in my mid-sized hometown in France after having worked in Paris, London, Hong Kong... and nothing beats actually enjoying what you're doing and going into a career where you're constantly learning and where every day is different.
Thank you for your videos, Dr!

Thanks to you, doc, and all other radiologists, techs, etc. who do all this stuff. I’ve had a brain tumor found since I was 15. I get regular MRIs to monitor that. Unfortunately, I have another recurrence found by you all in radiology. Thank you all for doing what you do. Thanks again, doc. Although I have a 4th recurrence now that will probably be my last, unfortunately, you all have always been there. Thank you all for that.

As an entrepreneur and interested in medicine you’re 100% right. Running a business is NONSTOP! Some medical students don’t understand that as they literally went from science majors to medical school. Believe me those CEOs and business owners are working just as hard.

I understand the not wanting to do mundane stuff completely. I got a PR degree in 2003, and worked in corporate America for 14 years before deciding to follow my passion for nursing in 2018 (at age 39 😱). I’m now an ER nurse, and working towards becoming an ACNP so I can work in trauma. Sometimes I wish I would have gone the new school route, but I felt like I was too old to do it. It’s really rewarding to actually be happy in what you’re doing and helping people be healthier at the same time. Looking forward to seeing your IR Fellowship journey!

I'm almost 35 and considering applying to medical school. I'd be in my 40s when done but I can relate to the analogy that your brain was turning into a potato when working in the corporate world. I'm a clinical research coordinator and actually only discovered that medicine really interested me while working on oncology clinical trials. Love hearing about non-traditional paths. The only thing is while my grades were excellent in undergrad (2004-2008), I don't think they could compete with today's inflated GPAs.

Holy crap I am going through the same process right now!! I am 22 and will be finishing up my bachelor's in psychology next spring, I will need at least a year of post-BACC for all of the sciences will be very hard but I realized by doing extensive research reading dozens of posts on SDN etc.. that I want to go to medical school and hopefully match into a psychiatry residency, but hey radiology looks pretty awesome too!! Your videos as well as many others have inspired me to realize that I can do this if I just work hard enough! :)

I relate to you thinking you weren't good at school, undermining the fact you didn't put enough work. I failed my high school senior year's science classes and barely graduated, at the time I tought I was dumb (but oddly enough not accusing the fact I was doing nothing lol, crazy how you can be so closed minded without being aware). Started film school at community college, failed all my courses, didn't know what to do /w my life... Watched grey's anatomy, epiphany came, and this crazy idea about maybe putting effort into school grew in my mind. Dropped film school next semester to re-take my high school science courses. Got into college in biochem year after. Graduated. Got into med school. Now I am, a despaired, but purposeful, MS2!

Very similar experience I had a desk job in the navy very mundane same thing everyday and decided no way I want to live my life like this. What killed me the most was I wanted to enter school full time 2years after the navy but a contract still kept me in til 24 but took some classes when I could. Now I’m a third year pre-med hopefully I will excel with all my courses til the end. If not I’m definitely gonna consider being an officer though regardless I’m glad I got the motivation to go to school. If I didn’t take that chance I’d have missed out on great knowledge and just what i’m capable of. Though gotta say glad I saw this video even if it was a year later! Great motivation.

I went through a similar thing. I always just assumed I wasn't good at school or good enough to go into any kind of medical field. I really just lacked a lot of confidence and didn't try enough. I worked way too many years of retail and useless office work that I didn't feel good about at all before I finally decided to go into nursing. I remember telling my BFF, and I was so afraid to tell people because I had never done anything science related or been "good" at math and science back in high school. She was just like ok...you could totally become a nurse. You should do that. She was just so casual and confident about it, like why wouldn't you? So that's what I had to start telling myself- why shouldn't I? I thought the same as your brother, like I have the opportunity to go back to school, there are tons of nursing schools here, I work full time and can even save the money, I can afford to take the pre-reqs...why not give it a go? I loved hearing your story, you don't see many on youtube that didn't just go straight into medicine.

You know what i feel the same way. I just feel medicine is my route. My dad has been working as a engineer for 30+ years now. He even says himself he wishes he could have done something else. I have also witnessed many stressful things that he has to go through day in and day out just to take care of my family. And that idea of just working like that so hard for a corporation is just not for me. I feel like it would be so much rewarding and not as boring so I am leaning towards medicine now as a premed in college.
