You don't understand how much I needed to hear someone else with a similar story to mine. I came out of high school with a 4.0 unweighted after doing the IB program and was entering uni with a full ride as well. I just finished my first semester of university and I underestimated all of the courses I deemed to be "easy A's". I tried so hard but ended up with like a 2.9 and now need to raise it to a 3.3 this coming semester to keep my scholarship. Had a few quarters of sub-3.0 gpa, but ended strong with lots of 4.0's in junior and senior year of college. I'm learning now that the key to success is adaptation in challenging times. This hit me so hard because while I had fellow majors breeze through their courses I was struggling balancing my time as I was also a commuting student. After I graduated I took time to gather some work experience and explore other options because my grades were subpar at best thanks to organic chemistry. I’m now taking classes at a local community college to help boost my GPA and with some motivation from my previous PI, I’m looking at post bacc programs geared for people like me who got stuck but are determined to put in the work. Because we are just as worthy for that title even if the routes we take vary. I’m hopeful for what my future will hold.

I was completely freaking out and crying about school, until I clicked this video, so thank you for making this. It's my sophomore year and it feels like my future's about to be over because of how I've been doing in physics and organic chemistry. It's just so nice to hear someone who is as successful as you, share similar struggles and still come out of it as strong as ever and still growing. It's so stressful especially knowing that there are people out there with perfect GPA's, and it just makes me wonder why I'm not able to do it. This semester has really made me question so many things, but I really hope I can turn it around in these last 3 weeks, the way you had your junior year. I am an 18 year old Biology student at Georgia State University and Fall 2019 (Aug-Dec) was my first semester as a Freshman. I graduated from high school same year with a 4.73 GPA and from Dual Enrollment with a 3.88 GPA (transferred those credits). I was unprepared, i wasn't energetic, i was working, and i had to commute from home to school to work then back to home (a max of 13 hours without sleep). I wasn't as motivated to complete work and go to class every day because i was so tired, so I failed the semester with a 0.53 GPA (earned only 6 cred hrs out of 15 cred hrs). It brung my gpa down from the 3.88 that was transferred to a 3.3 gpa. And since those credits were transferred, I am classified as a Junior (🙍🏽). Words of advice...do not skip years of college using credits you have earned..only use credits you think will be most beneficial. You will miss out on a lot and if you can't handle the pace, you will be certain to fail. Also, be organized! Make a way. I have 42 more cred hrs out of 120 to fulfill and i have to take those classes again that i have failed. I have financial aid, the federal grant and Hope Scholarship. With that, you can't mess up. And the medical school i am aiming for is Emory Medical School. You have to have all the required courses, 3.5+ GPA, letters of recommendation, volunteer experience, 515+ on MCAT, great personal skills, etc. For those that want to be in the medical field, take your time and take advantage of what you are given, choose your teachers wisely, and have fun. Your brain will overload if you do not keep things in order and knowledgeable. Also, get well rested. Bless those who are struggling and want to pursue a career in the medical field. Your time will come, if you know it is for sure the right path for you.

I wasn’t the best high school student besides my senior year so I didn’t have any plans to go to college. I opened up my own small business and ran for public office at the age of 18 years old. But my parents and grandparents pushed me to at least start community college. Wellll, after being pushed I didn’t want to let them down so I went ahead and signed up for classes for a semester. I absolutely didn’t care at all (2017) and had a lot of personal family issues going on, so of course I failed my classes besides history. I dropped out of community college and decided to stay involved in local government and just work. Well now it’s almost 2020 and I’m 20 years old. I’ve thought long and hard about what I want out of life and I’ve always loved science and anything to do with medical and have decided to start over and give college at a university a try. I know I can do it because when I’ve put effort into any class I’ve always received an A or B, and now that I’m older I’m more disciplined. Do you think that one semester at my community college will effect my chances of even looking towards medical school later down the road, if I retook the classes I failed and improved and received decent (A-B’s perhaps one C) my next four years in my undergrad?

    • @AaronTrillo
      @AaronTrillo  4 роки тому

I think if you can convince admissions that you are NOW prepared for medical school then regardless of your past you can do it. You say you want to do medicine but have you actually shadowed a physician at a family office, or in the ICU. It sounds great and all but if you do not actually know what doctors do day in and out. "Thinking" of being a doctor is way different then "KNOWING." I hope this helps. If you do decide to get into this amazing field I wish you the best of luck and it is time to GRIND!

Had a pretty similar situation to you. I’m currently a Pre-Med, but my first two semesters of college were not good. Kicked it off with a 2.3, and then my second semester with a 1.8 after it was said and done. My first semester was pretty much the same problem as you, I didn’t have the right materials and strategies to study. The second semester, I had to have a surgery to remove a wisdom tooth (won’t go into much detail but it was not in a convenient spot, so they could only remove the one). That cause me to fall behind, and fail one class. Although none of these classes so far are science related, I’m reserving to take those at a four year university, as I’m in technical college at the moment planning to transfer. It’s a much more cost effective method for me lol. Not to mention a couple semesters I had to miss due to a surgery and experiencing a near death illness. Although my last semester I aced all my classes, once there wasn’t anything standing in my way. I’m not sure if medical schools like that much error in the beginning of an academic career, but I hope they see my effort and grades going forward. Thank you for the video, you gave me a lot of inspiration to pursue my passion.

Hi Brooke, I am happy I was able to give you motivation! For chemistry make sure to understand the mechanism and DO NOT focus on learning only specific problem reactions unless your professor gives you a cue he is going to ask about it! Hahaha Sometimes they will do that. This was when you encounter a problem you know how to do it. My fave way to remember pathways is drawing stuff on whiteboard from my memory over and over. #makeyourownluck

However I want to be a doctor, I work in the medical field currently and I love working with patients, but I want to diagnosis and treat illness. So I am going to go to community college and retake some of the high school courses that I barely passed, Physical Science, Algerbra, Chemistry, Biology. And hey I work at a hospital that offers tuition assistance so maybe it was just a matter of letting the cards line up at the right time.

Sometimes you gotta wait for those cards to line up! Good luck

For real he took some hard classes that 2.7gpa really when choosing classes I'd highly recommend trying to be realistic with yourself and if you can handle such a dense couseload. I've been able to mix some hard classes with some easy classes but that won't always be the case. And at the end of the day as much as you might want to finish college early or on time sometimes at the expense of better grades take less classes if you can. Especially since i'm sure that bio and chem were each 4 credits if not more. But seriously he gives some solid advice and perspective really glad he made this video and gives me a fresh of breath air as I had two f's on my transcript but now junior year 3.9gpa! It's not easy but anything is possible with the right mindset.

Hey Mike great SOLID advice as well. I completely agree with this WHOLE comment. Thanks for sharing and showing that I am not the only one, as well as we are all able to make it better if we set our mind to it!

I just wrapped up my second semester in my freshman undergrad and I have to say I am surprised I did really well in Calculus (A-97%). Chemistry and Biology I struggle in but have maintained above a 90 for both. I’m taking Organic chem, Cell bio and genetics in the fall so who knows how that will go.

Your story is parallel to mine. I have that strong upward trend in all of my upper-level biology classes and I have strong recommendations from many of the biology professors including the head of the department but I have been concerned on whether that would be enough, and if I should even bother applying.

Check out my "How I Explained my Low GPA to med school admissions" Video. I just made it very clear to them what was going on and was honest!

My highschool used to be private school and now it's a public school, however it's really hard. Like I am senior in high school and taking Cal 2

Calculus is one of the most challenging college courses IMO. That is amazing! Keep up the hard work.

A lot of people I went to school with including myself we didn't know what to be. I wish our school emphasized on career day or had classes on what interests us. It wasn't until I became a caregiver and later a nursing assistant that I wanted to be a Doctor. I just graduated with a 3.8 GPA in Psychology and now will do pre reqs classes for med school.
Idk for some odd reason I didn't really understand biology as well as chemistry. When I did take an intro class chem made more sense.

That's great to hear! I do not think becoming a Dr. is something a career day could quite show you but I definitely agree that early exposure helps a lot with making that decision. It is definitely a calling I believe. Glad to have you onboard!

I knew a guy named Dave Liu, and he failed the paramedic test before getting into medical school. When they didn't know who I was, my parents didn't have the money to buy the paramedic training. (Would have been more valuable than the 4 year degree probably). My sophemore year, they knew I who I was and what my nickname was. No way I would get to be a paramedic.
