My son has sickle cell disease, and it's a struggle to get him to take his hydroxyurea. He is 18. I've explained to him several times why he has to take it consistently, and his doctors have also explained to him as well, but he keeps forgetting and skipping his doses. It breaks my heart to see him go through so much pain when he gets a pain crisis. He just started college this fall. I made him subscribe to your channel so that he can learn and listen to others with the disease.
Thank you for your viewership and subscribing. Although hydroxyurea is not effective for everyone with sickle cell, the only way to truly know if it works for your son is that he takes it consistently everyday for several months. I hope he stays in good health while studying at college!
U have to be consistent in taking hydroxyurea because it tales time to show result but when it show result it is tremendous. I have not seen crisis from past 4 years and i never skip my capsule
I love the format. My doctor took me off of this drug for various reasons, which I won't get into. Nevertheless, I'm happy that this treatment worked for you. I want to know if you plan on reviewing more modern drugs/treatments for sickle cell disease. I also want to know if you plan on addressing opiate addiction/dependence in Sickle Cell patients and ways to combat the issue. So from one sickle cell patient to another, keep up the good work.

Thank you for your video brother . the doctor told I have to be hospitalised at least twice a year with severe pain .which I don’t get that and my haemoglobin is between 11.5 and 12 thanks god but in the other hand I get the annoying moderate pain every two month or three which last for a week .

I’m going to restart taking my hydrea; it’s been proven to help with decreasing buildup of bilirubin.. my eyes clearly show it! Do you ever experience jaundice?
That's great to hear! I hope you continue to take hydroxyurea and it serves you well. When I was as a child, I did have jaundice, but I have not had it since.
I have high Platecounts, wbc,rbc and as my bone marrow reports my bone marrow is working 90% which is not good my doctor is giving me this medicine from last 8 months but there is not much improvement in my health .. so should i countinue this medicine... And another doubt is these symptoms can lead to Lukemia?
Hydroxyurea also saved my life too 👌🏾 I would now consider my sickle cell mild because of it. I last had a major crisis, 2 years ago and that was only because I was abroad and ran out of it. Sometimes I forget I even have sickle cell. Hydroxyurea didn't help me with weight gain though, apetamin did.

The drug is recommended for children older than 2 years old. Although it is possible for your child to take it, I would consult with a doctor about the possibility of taking it at one years old.
They should give you as much of it until your blood count goes down instead of up, if that ever really happens. It seems many people experience no side effects, I'm guessing people who do have nutritional deficiencies like vitamin d or calcium. If you do experience side effects nothing wrong with going slow, the experience seems to be the side effects actually go away, instead of becoming more severe. Also hydroxyurea was only adopted broadly for sickle cell after 1995, so it may be vastly life extending without anyone having been able to confirm it, as older people already had the organ damage, and younger people would still be within the previous normal lifespan for sickle cell. Also the stigma of being 'chemo' probably has many unnecessarily skipping doses . Heck I want to take it to boost my fetal hemoglobin (no sickle cell).
I know you mentioned that people with sickle cell on average have a haemoglobin level between 6 and 11. Is this the same with people with the sickle cell trait?
I have also been experiencing a side effect of memory loss... its really slow and gradual, but I find it difficult to remember things at least one time a day. I can feel the loss of focus and that my brain has slowed down. Anybody else experience this?

After using it for 6 months and a year, let's assume that the pain attacks no longer occur. Can I stop using it or should I use it for life?
Continue to use it Leon. As soon as you stop using it, you have the potential to get the attacks again.

No Jonnie. People with the sickle cell trait usually do not have lower hemogoblin levels!

In regards to taking hydroxyurea, I have not heard of any cases dealing with memory loss. You should speak with your doctor about this issue
Loosing focus and concentration, yes I experience that. But I think that's a side effect of anemia, and not hydroxyurea.
Brain fog is what they call it per the doctors from the disease

It is a possibility that the drug can can affect fertility, but it is not common.
