Holy shit same. I've learned more in 2 months than in 5 years

hah i dont listen in music class and now i have exams so i just rewatch this 10 times for more :P
4:02 there are multiple answers
1 whole note
2 half notes
4 quarter notes
Also 2 quarter notes and one half note ;)
@@louie1litk619 TOO MANY!
Also beamed eight notes and eight notes :>
It's a whole rest
I can put there combinations like; 1 half note 2 quarter notes right?
I think it’s important to specify for the sake of clarity that the bottom number tells you what kind of beat you need to use. 4 = a Quarter Note, 2 = Half Note, 8 = Eighth Note Etc.
3:54
thanks for the comment
and the tempo is the BPM at left top of the clef to know the speed of the bars right?
@@StagnantMizuyes that's right, if the tempo is 90 and the time signature is 4/4 then that means that all of the notes no matter what length you divide them into must add upto 90 quarter notes per minute

I just started studying music theory a couple days ago I thought it’d be tough but it’s actually quite fun thanks to awesome tutors on UA-cam like you :) thank you
Just wait...you will see horrors beyond the scope of sanity
I study music 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 but this is soo confusion
Hows your journey gone?
Yeah, I know what if you’re not smart? this is so hard for me! I’m in a cold room sweating right now. I don’t understand what time signature i need to be in when trying to create a song or where it needs to repeat. meaning; I don’t know the correct question to ask to get the fucking answer I want! 😭 it’s driving me mad!
How is it now?
I'm probably that one guy who searched this up lmao
Edit: I finally know Time signatures, bars and barlines now. I had to do a verbally counting so I needed this
Don't worry, you are not alone!
not alone
Not alone!!!
im joining the not alone squad
U r 100% absolutely, positively, definitely NOT alone!!! :)
2:49 The device shown here is in fact a "final" barline, which indicates the end of a given musical work; a "double" barline is comprised of two thin vertical lines (as opposed to a thin barline followed by a thick one, which constitutes a final barline as shown here), and indicates a significant change in the nature of the notation (e.g. rhythmic and/or tonal changes), such as one might find when transitioning from one section to another within a song.
Double barlines serve as a warning to the performer that the nature of the music (and therefore the notation representing it) is about to change significantly, rather than repeat in a similar way as before.
Some composers tend to use double barlines merely to indicate a section change, even when the latter section has similar properties to the former.
In these instances a "section name", "rehearsal mark" or similar should be utilised to mark the new section instead, as these are more appropriate devices for such a purpose.
Ah, so the double bar-line is to, e.g., separate a song's refrain/chorus, bridge, and distinct verses?
@@personxyz8309 Please re-read final paragraph I posted on the subject for your answer.
2 minims are missing
I feel like I am the only one who got there on my own.
That said, thank you. I was always confused about time signatures and although I don't know what the second number is about at least I clearly understood the first one so THANK YOU
You aren't the only one :)

There's a part two that explains the bottom number:)
@@torekapersaud1427 Yes i figured that out since then :p
I got there because I got inspired by Toby Fox after being a fan of his new creations.
Watched over 1 hours of videos to understand time signatures and understood within a minute on this video. Very well explained. Many thanks
So the way for me to understand things with 100% clarity is to be taught like kids.
Clapping, preschool music background, drawing with colors, practicing.
Thanks
I am watching this bc i didnt listen in music class and i have exams now so imma just vibe with my iced coffee while watching this 10 times
Did you pass your exams?

Thank you so much for this -- I came here voluntarily as a teacher, and just wanted to say how clear (and yet actually enjoyable) this is. Confident that this video will help musicians of all ages understand! All the best.

Ikr, I watched a music theory fundamentals for beginners video 4 times and I barely understood everything but the time signatures, but this video easily explained it in barely 2 minutes. I might actually be a 3 year old.
Noobs DeSroobs it’s an abbreviation. that would be the same thing as saying “r u” and correcting it with “are you”. they’re just abbreviating it so it won’t take as long to write. like “omg” or “lol”

1:43 The Regular double barline is used for changes in tone, pitch or pace. This shown here is a *bold* double barline, and is used for the end of a song.
I've been having trouble with time signature and it's our exam tomorrow, but luckily I found this video it helped me understand very quickly!

Your drawing is sooo smooth and you explain it clearly.. Thx!
I searched this one
because I want to show off my music skills to my friends but I've forgotten most of it. It's been 3 years...man I should learn again.
I used your program as the wrap-up activity and quiz for my 2nd grade music class. I displayed the video on my white board then as you asked a question I had each student come up and draw their answer to the question asked on the displayed projected stave. I paused the video before the answer was given & then we checked their answers with you. This was way better then pencil and paper and I marked their comprehension of the skill as we went through the video. Thank you for the way you taught this concept it was a great for me to use as an assessment tool. So your short 4:28 video took us 30 min to complete and the kids never lost interest! I will be using it for my 1st and 3rd grade music classes as well. Thank you - Very Interactive!
THANKYOU FOR MAKING THIS EASY TO COMPREHEND , you don't understand I've been struggling with this!!
Very informational, but I do wish he went into more complex Time Signatures like 7/8 and stuff. But other than that, a great video that easily explains Time Signatures.
Struggle no more after i watched the video. Thank you. Now i can teach my daughter.
I never understand this when I learn in primary school in music lesson .ot wss never fun.but i have always think people are so talented. Playing piano and a form of relaxation.
I am learning ;)
Cool 😎
I was in band for many years and have played music since then and I still don't fully understand this concept. Yes I understand the time signature dictates how many counts in a measure. But does it have any affect on how the song actually sounds? So in your example at 0.47 if you changed the time signature to 3/4 and clapped the tune, wouldn't it still sound the exact same as when you clapped at 4/4? Obviously the bars would be in different spots. I guess I'm just not sure what role the time signature places exactly. If you change the key a song is played in the entire song becomes different. But if you change the time signature, does something similar happen? Or is the time signature only a arbitrary way to organize a song?
Hi Adam, a good comment- there does exist music without barline, it was only really during the baroque period that barlines became more widely used. Barlines create a very practical way of defining sections, musical phrase, structures and more. That said, composers like Messiaen dismissed time-signatures in some scores, for e.g. slow movement of Vingt regards sur L’Enfant Jésus. Research on this topic reveals the ability to read, decipher, understand the musical language as the main reasons. A bit like having sentences without punctuation. Or a piece of music that the notes within the score have accidentals in place that correlate to say, Ab major, but there's no actual key signature at the start, just lots of accidentals contained within! It's the same, but different :-)
Beats actually have natural accents that help define their position in the beat structure. There is an emphasis on beat one nearly always. Beat two is most always subordinate to beat one. This basic concept is why certain styles of music tend to have their defining qualities. All you need to do is listen to a rhythmic pattern of music from the more popular commercial genres (pop, rock, blues, some forms of jazz etc.) to see how the rhythmic emphasis on beat two helps to give that subordinate beat more accent. You often find that instruments chosen for beat two are instruments that give a lot of punch like snare drum, piano, or rhythm guitar. This playing of accents is what drives stylistic differences. So to get back to your original question, if you were to clap the exact same pattern in two differing meters, you could have differing accents on the notes that fell on beat one in each of the meters, respectively, thus making the pattern sound, well, different.
Thank you!!! I have been playing piano for a long time. But never understood this!
For the "Music Quiz" you can either put 2 minims/half notes or 4 crotchets/quarter note or 8 quavers/eight notes
give it a rest lol
Thanks!I didn't really understand at first, but now I understand Thanks!
This is so good>im learning so much.Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I finally know how to answer my seatwork thanks to you. Also for bar 3 I think 2 half notes can fit bar 3.
Thank you for this amazing and simple explanation ❤
How helpful best explainer ever! Good job!

Thanks so much! I was so confused about my music project this is so helpful
Yes... i can totally say that you're the best teacher THANKYOU!
I still don’t understand how you can decide which type of beat goes on the bottom of the time signature. Is the choice based on perception and being used to it other than a fixed choice that can be analysed prior to proceeding? Many thank in advance.
It’s how many of the bars are in something called a phrase which is the amount of bars until a change in music but to count bars you have to know how to count beats. I’ve only just learnt this (year 10 here😂) so if it’s not 100% right then I’m sorry😂
Wow, I really only needed to know what the bottom number does... unbelievable...
The number underneath is the note type of the beat. For example, in 4/4 u have 4 quarter notes per measure. In 6/8 u have 6 8th notes. In 3/8 u have 3 8th notes. in 3/4 u have 3 quarter notes. in 9/8 u have 9 8th note. The reason why 6/8 is counted commonly, 1 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 2, is because of feeling of the subdivision. (1) - 2 - 3 - (4) - 5 - 6. So when u count 6/8 as 1-2-1-2, u are subdividing triplets. I explained 6/8 as an example to feeling and meter.
Upper number indicates how many beats (number) in a brachet & lower number indicates what kind of beat is it.. e.g Lower number 2 , 4 8 16 stands for minim, chrochet, quaver, or semiquaver respectively as explained by acoustic correctly
TY THIS HELPED SO MUCH I’ve always been so confused by the time and key signatures 😫
Thank you bro! It help me to understand very clear! Straight to the point, Great Video! do more! Thank you! God bless!
Thank you thank you Ive been in band since 6th grade I’m now a freshman in college. I’ve been struggling to get my counting down or at least the time signatures. My band director in junior high really wasn’t much help so I never asked for help throughout highschool but thank you so much for this video it really helped me. I’ve played in a recital, went to band clinics so nervous that I would mess up. This video helped a lot 🙏🏾🤍
