I totally get what you’re saying. However, the nail tech wouldn’t know that you have enhancements on that need to be removed, if you book a full set. So it’s important to book a removal service if you want that done within your appointment timeframe. It would be helpful if my booking site had an option where customers could answer pre-booking questions before picking their time!

I am getting acrylic for the first time this weekend and I just wanted to ask if it upsets you if I show you a picture of like what I want? It sounds silly but I’ve been thinking about it
Just a question I have social anxiety but my friend is coming back from San Francisco and we promised we would get our nails done the thing is I’ve never went to get my nails done especially acrylics so how do I ask for them when I walk in?
Uh oh I took my acrylics off because they were already coming off...my mom wouldn’t take me to get them off but since they were already popping off is that better than taking them off when they are solid??
You can take them off at home the same way they should at a salon. Pick up a bottle of acetone from the store and soak your nails for 15 minutes. It will soften them enough to scrape them off. This way your nail won't get damaged underneath :)
Please tell your mom to be responsible for your nails. If she could pay to have them put on, she should have money and time to get them off properly instead of letting fallen off.
I don’t understand the shaving piece. Are you my saying don’t go too long without shaving before getting a pedicure, or just don’t say anything about it?
If you don’t care shaving your legs, why do you care if the nail tech cares? If you do care, then you should have shaved before you came in. Why do you care if the tech would throw up looking at your hairy legs because your didn’t shave in two weeks , and what makes you think telling them that you didn’t shave causes your legs hairy help them not throwing up? 😭
love your informative videos! I'd been getting into doing nails, going to school to become a nail technician, etc.! thanks for all your expertise! part 2 , please!
I always soak mine off when I went for my gel polish .. but I do it myself now.. I’m a nail tech and very picky so I just do it myself .. but I feel what your saying xc.
I went to cosmetology school and wanted to just do the nail course but I figured I might as well learn the whole thing. At my school they didn't really focus much on like nail art or different shapes or styles of acrylic nails....Which is what I wanted to focus on.... Well i guess my question for you is if you had to go take classes after Cosmo school to learn more and if so how do think it helped you.
Is there a way to get the nails off at home? i plan to move after i get my nails done and im not sure if the place im moving to has a nail salon i can get it removed at, if this is not possible, can i repaint it myself some how?
You can definitely remove them yourself. If you have enhancements like acrylic or gel, you can soak them in a glass bowl with acetone for 10-15 minutes and buff them away!
The worst thing is when you dm with a client a week before the appointment and they ask you about EVERYTHING like oh how long nails is your max oh i dont wanna have those nails like just go to the person who does the nails and have your idea planned out beforehand
There are many products on the market that soft skin and remove calluses on the feet. I like to use a callus remover and let it soak for a few minutes. I then follow up with the foot file that has about 120 grit paper to get a smooth feel!
@@polishedbyamy yes I agree that sand paper gives a superior smooth finish. There are some people (especially men] that have super rough feet that you would be there for ages sanding just with paper. I always though razor shavers or cheese graters with the calus cream were just a faster 'first step' towards removing that dead skin (equivalent say to 20 grit sand paper). From this start finer sanding type tools should be used to achieve a smooth finish. Thank you for all your great content and advice.
I haven’t gotten my feet done in over a year. I don’t usually have the money or the time and I’m scared now after watching this of what I should ask to make my feet feel softer since I’m getting them done in the next 3 to 4 weeks. What should I ask for them to get rid of all the hard spots?
I've you never been to a nail salon, how much time do you have to prepare after you get there but before you get served? I remember hair salons have books of pics of hair styles, and know nails as salons have those swatches, any books of nail styles or descriptions of artificial nails you could read?
I usually spend about 10 minutes or so discussing with my clients exactly what they want. Sometimes we will look online for nail art inspiration and designs!
@@polishedbyamy I've seen videos here on youtube, but nothing really, comprehensive/thorough enough, it only needsto show the procedure for one nail, since you'll usually be getting the same polish/artificial nail on each finger.
Ik I’m really late but I recently went in for a dip powder removal and change of color. She kept hitting me with the drill. I wasn’t on my phone or anything because I think that’s rude. Is it okay to say “ma’am/sir that hurts” or maybe it was because I didn’t get a mani so she was trying to get my cuticles off? I just want to know how to go about this nicely and not come off as a rude person.
That can be an awkward situation. It seems like the nail tech just wasn't being very careful when using the drill. You could ask them next time to just soak them off for the removal instead of filing. If they won't do that, you can tell them you prefer a gentle touch with the drill :)
I'm sorry I didn't see this comment for so long! I use a foot paddle that has different grits on each side (one is more coarse than the other). If the client has calluses or super dry skin, I'll soak the area in a callus remover cream first and then exfoliate with the paddle :)
karen nr you should be regularly gently exfoliating your feet (e.g. brush them at the end of a shower), and moisturizing them daily (which makes it easier for the dead skin to naturally drop off through daily friction e.g. walking and in the shower when you do give them a bit of a scrub). If your skin grows unusually fast then you may want to use a moisturizer with a mild to strong chemical exfoliant, depending on if it's just a little bit faster or if it's straight up genetic mutation caused way too fast.
random question, do you have to book? even the ones in the shopping centres? me and my friend are going tomorrow and I don’t know whether i should book.
It depends on the salon. Some require you to book an appointment and it helps you not have to wait forever on a chair. There are many salons that accepts walk ins too! :)
I was never told at school that a client had to wait 48 hours after shaving, before being able to get a pedicure. Why is that now? I've gone myself to get a pedicure right after shaving. Is it bad?
It's because you get micro-abrasions on your legs from shaving. If you are then exposed to an unsanitary pedicure bowl or jet spa, you have the possibility of getting an infection. If you go to a salon that plays by the rules when it comes to disinfection, you'll be fine! :)
+Polished By Amy Awesome! Thanks for the reply! 😄 I figured that might be it, at least I'm informed now, and I know what else to ask. Love your channel, been learning lots and getting myself ready for when I'm licensed and what to expect, some what. Thank you once again for replying!
Cher A no it’s not. If your get a spa pedicure that comes with scrub to exfoliate your skin, your skin will get irritated, causes rashes, a big chance to get infection. Liners help prevent the infection from previous clients, but you can get infection from dirt after your get the pedicure too.
*Htx* Layy for reallllll I went like a couple times and personally I have extremely sweaty hands like I’m talking sometimes dripping and one time even though the guy was nice about it which is a positive he also admitted to it and was like “sweaty hands 👀🤚🏻💦😂” and turned on the fan it was soooo embarrassing and I suggest before going just try relaxing and not thinking about your hands about to sweat, don’t know if this well help it works for me and I’m like 14 ;-;
I think when booking, the receptionist should ask if they need removal or not, since it's such a hassle!! Don't blame the people!!!! Also on your prices, they should list "soak off", and to let them know to tell the person doing the booking! And it should say soak offs require extra time, and list the time. How are people suppose to know if you don't tell them??!!
I definitely agree with you. That's why I always add that memo before a client is able to complete booking online. It says for them to add a removal to their service before booking another service because of the extra time it takes :)
My four year old goes with me sometimes to get hers painted she doesn’t run around and I set scooby doo up on my phone while her nails are drying. The last place I went by myself was absolutely awful and I asked if they were okay with doing kids nails and they flat out told me no so... because of that and the fact I was charged $35 for just my nails painted with gel polish(no full set, just painted) I won’t go back there.
Is it really that bad to bring my 2 girls with me to have their nails painted ive never had mine done but my kids are super into painting their nails and i thought it would be so fun to go together and spend time with them and get their nails painted i have a friend that takes her kids to get her nails and feet done every time
What is peeling off the enhancements , I'm sorry idk I just do nails at home and don't go to a salon I just love her videos , but I'm curious to what it is.
If anyone knows..what to say then what do you tell the person doing your nails if you want an ombré...but acrylics because I’ve seen people(UA-cam) doing them with like the color of the acrylic I’m not sure...🤷🏻♀️
I love having children get services done, they are SO fun! Its a different story when just the parents are getting the service done and leave their children to wander lol
Well behaved kids are the best! I love doing their nails when they sit still and talk politely. If they want designs i will do my best to give them the cutest designs i could possibly do (cupcakes, pineapples, flowers...). Some kids would just constantly moving and splashing water out of the pedi bowl, and jump every time i touch them. Thats exhausting...
Polished By Amy I’m glad you clarified this, because my little girl loves getting her nails done. Like above, my daughter will sit still to get her nails done but not for much else.
I have never gone to a nail salon I wnat to but I’m scared do I have to make a appointment earlier or Can i just show up? Also my fingers have a lot of like idk what they are called but they are not pretty do they care cause I feel like imma feel uncomfortable
Most nail salons take appointments and walk in's, so it's whatever you want to do. Nail tech's don't care what your nails look like when you come to us, because it's our job to make them fabulous! Go get pampered girl! :)
The acrylic isn't damaging at all! The damage happens when a nail tech doesn't prep your nails right before they put them on, and when they are removing them wrong. If you find yourself a quality nail tech, you won't have to worry about that and you'll have a great experience! :)
Wait so what's wrong with going without shaving for a month? My guy friend gets pedicures with me sometimes and he never shaves...is that like rude or gross?
They both come from the same "acrylic family" with their chemical makeup, but the obvious difference is what they look like. Acrylic is always a liquid and powder that the nail tech combines to form over your nails. Gel is always a goopy, jelly substance that comes in a bottle or pot.
Might seem a silly question but should clients tell you if they are ticklish before you start a pedicure or do you ask? Surely nail techs like yourself have ticklish feet to?
I have a nail app tomorrow and I'm never on my phone but where do I look if my nail tech isn't talking to me,like do I look at her look at my nails? What do I do 😂
If you have a nail tech that doesn't really talk to you. It makes the time go faster if you're actually talking to somebody on your phone. Well she's doing one hand then you put the phone in your other hand very simple. When it's time to polish then you hang up and don't touch your phone while she's polishing
Being a nail tech and esthetician, I completely 100% agree! Preach girl, preach! Love it. There's been so many times where I just want just yell at my clients haha!!
@@polishedbyamy Yeah, I'm Honestly Shocked I Remember It Definitely Tickled More Than Any Other Tool For Filing. lol It Left My Big Toe Sore Afterwards, But That Was Taken Care Of With The Foot Rub. Is There Honestly No Proper Way To Sanitize That Tool? How Are Some Places Even Offering It, Or Even Able To Purchase It? Shouldn't Manufacturers Not Be Allowed To Make Or Sell It?
Eleonore Bon um... no i cant. you obviously dont know what its like to be busy... im attatched to my phone. It has a f computer and everything on it. My life. My work, saftey, everything. I dont sit and talk on my phone at the salon but if i have to id like to see if i can still be curtious.
Bewitched | That must be intense. I’m a corporate lawyer for an international law firm, always working on cross border matters across time zones, and I thought I was online a lot. But luckily, I can still respond to an email or call an hour later. As for safety, I have never had to worry about that at a nail salon! But everyone is different.
Every profession wishes we had perfect clients. Truth is...most aren't going to listen to you suggest what they should do. Just a suggestion, if you are working at a salon if you could get the receptionist to ask those questions or make those suggestions when they make the appointment then maybe the client will pick up on it and take the hint. Just tell them that's a new rule. Some times we just don't think! People have this idea that since they are paying for a service then it's up to you as a professional to tell them ahead of time. I think it would be totally ok for you to ask the client or suggest to the client ahead of time what your rules are. You could also post them on flyers or display what courtesy's they could show you so that your job gives them the best results. In fact , now that i think of it...what you are asking your client to do should be a industry standard! I would not be offended if my Nail Salon asked me to follow your guidelines...in fact I think it would make you look even more caring about their experience there!
I totally agree with you! I've added a list of salon guidelines to my booking page and website as well. It definitely helps to have those as a reminder and they will make your time in the salon run more smoothly! :)
If the nail salon you're going to has not cleaned where you soak your feet and you shaved prior too, you will have small scars from shaving that bacteria might get into causing an infection
How come you aren’t supposed to shave 48 hours before a pedicure? I’ve never had one I just can’t let a stranger touch my feet it’s so weird for me. Lol
Shaving causes many micro-abrasions on the skin. So if you're getting a pedicure at a salon that doesn't disinfect their tubs correctly, you're putting yourself at risk of infection and disease from the bacteria. It's something many people never think about!
Polished By Amy | But did you mean you don’t like it when people haven’t shaven in a long time? Because some women just don’t shave their legs. That shouldn’t be an issue for a pedicure, right?
From some comments I'm getting, I see my sarcasm is lost on some lol. I don't care if you prefer to shave or not shave your legs. My comments were a joke about my clients who forget to shave for a while and have super prickly legs. They get embarrassed, but it's no big deal! :)

love your informative videos! I'd been getting into doing nails, going to school to become a nail technician, etc.! thanks for all your expertise! part 2 , please!
That's so awesome, thank you so much for watching my videos! :)
I always soak mine off when I went for my gel polish .. but I do it myself now.. I’m a nail tech and very picky so I just do it myself .. but I feel what your saying xc.
Thank you for watching! :)
I was in your same position! Yes girl! Go take classes! Watch videos. Practice. Apply to a salon that provides extra education
Yes definitely take the initiative to do more classes! Watch videos too I recommend nail career education or naio nails
Did u make a video about how to order acrylics like when you go to the store how do you ask for them? I’m afraid I’ll make a big mistake 4:04 oh .-.
I can't believe some of these things need to be said. It's pretty obvious but people are special. Totally down for a part 2! Thanks for sharing!
It's so crazy really. Thank you so much for watching! :)
Do acrylic nails hurt when your getting them done? I’m getting them done on Saturday and I’m nervous.
They don't hurt at all! If it does, that means your nail tech is doing something wrong.
Polished By Amy thank you so much I’m getting my nails done today and I’ve been wondering that for a long time.thanks💞
Thanks so much for watching! :)
I have an appointment today and Im getting an acrylic set and I have 70 bucks but I’m scared that it might be more lol
It’s just a short simple set lol
The worst thing is when you dm with a client a week before the appointment and they ask you about EVERYTHING like oh how long nails is your max oh i dont wanna have those nails like just go to the person who does the nails and have your idea planned out beforehand
I’m getting acrylics for the first time soon and I grow out my nails, do they trim my nails when prepping?
Vivian Lau doubt they will but depends on how long you want your acrylics
If not using the "cheese grater" what do you recommend or di with regard to handling very rough feet skin?
Thank you so very much for quickly answering me, I really appreciate your valuable time and effort.
Thank you so much for watching!!
@@polishedbyamy yeah, just pics of nails would be good too, like hair salon books
@@polishedbyamy that would be a good subject for a video in itself, showing the process with a client.
If they won't do that, you can tell them you prefer a gentle touch with the drill :)
what do you use to get the dry dead skin off the feet ?? thanks for sharing I know now what not to do ☺
@Polished By Amy please answer this
I've seen salons use foot scrubs.. no tools.
I'm sorry I didn't see this comment for so long! I use a foot paddle that has different grits on each side (one is more coarse than the other). If the client has calluses or super dry skin, I'll soak the area in a callus remover cream first and then exfoliate with the paddle :)
I USE BABY FEET... THEN 2 WEEKS LATER I GET A PEDI
karen nr you should be regularly gently exfoliating your feet (e.g. brush them at the end of a shower), and moisturizing them daily (which makes it easier for the dead skin to naturally drop off through daily friction e.g. walking and in the shower when you do give them a bit of a scrub). If your skin grows unusually fast then you may want to use a moisturizer with a mild to strong chemical exfoliant, depending on if it's just a little bit faster or if it's straight up genetic mutation caused way too fast.
I am a guy who likes to get his nails done. Never done it professionally though. Any more tips for a newcomer?
random question, do you have to book? even the ones in the shopping centres? me and my friend are going tomorrow and I don’t know whether i should book.
Most of the salons now put the plastic thing in the jet tub before putting water in it so that's ok right.
Cher A no it’s not. If your get a spa pedicure that comes with scrub to exfoliate your skin, your skin will get irritated, causes rashes, a big chance to get infection. Liners help prevent the infection from previous clients, but you can get infection from dirt after your get the pedicure too.
if you have naturally sweaty hands what do you do about it? bc I'm nervous and kinda scared that they will say something about my hands
You don't have to worry about anything! The nail tech is there to make your nails fabulous, so just enjoy being pampered! :)
*Htx* Layy for reallllll I went like a couple times and personally I have extremely sweaty hands like I’m talking sometimes dripping and one time even though the guy was nice about it which is a positive he also admitted to it and was like “sweaty hands 👀🤚🏻💦😂” and turned on the fan it was soooo embarrassing and I suggest before going just try relaxing and not thinking about your hands about to sweat, don’t know if this well help it works for me and I’m like 14 ;-;
I think when booking, the receptionist should ask if they need removal or not, since it's such a hassle!!
Polished By Amy Thats right! As long as you know ahead of time, it is not a problem.
Thank God you made this video and now i hope all my client watch this. It is so helpful.
Hey thx for the recommendations what about Essie brand?
Is it really that bad to bring my 2 girls with me to have their nails painted ive never had mine done but my kids are super into painting their nails and i thought it would be so fun to go together and spend time with them and get their nails painted i have a friend that takes her kids to get her nails and feet done every time
I love doing kids nails! They always chose the most fun colors and always want glitter, haha!
What is peeling off the enhancements , I'm sorry idk I just do nails at home and don't go to a salon I just love her videos , but I'm curious to what it is.
Its when people just pick off their enhancements instead of getting soaked off or filed off by a professional.
Thank you someone has made a video of what you should do so many people do not understand time is money
Thank you so much for watching Erica! :)
If anyone knows..what to say then what do you tell the person doing your nails if you want an ombré...but acrylics because I’ve seen people(UA-cam) doing them with like the color of the acrylic I’m not sure...🤷🏻♀️
You can tell them that you'd like a soft ombre with acrylic. Some nail techs don't offer acrylics, so make sure you choose a salon that does! :)
Polished By Amy thank you:)..but where I went I just showed my nail tech what I wanted once she came she was so sweet but thank you😁
I'm of two minds about kids I take my four year old cus she loves getting pedis only time I ever see her sit still for anything
If they are well behaved sure but if the kid is squirming it's a nightmare.
Should we clip our nails before coming in or leave them long and uneven?
It's totally up to you! You don't have to do anything to your nails prior to your appointment because that's our job! :)
@@polishedbyamy Thank you!
Ever wondered (at least I have) my nail polish is called polish, but never heard lipstick (yours in the video reminded me) is called "stick" :)
This was actually very helpful to know
Yay! That's awesome to hear! :)
I know I’m late but my moms nail tech LOVES to see us
Please do a part two. Yes. This was so helpful 💕
Thank you so much for watching!
is it awkward? im about to get my nails done for the first time.
I've never had acrylic nails I've thought about it a free times but afraid it will ruin my nails...is it really damaging or am I over thinking things
The acrylic isn't damaging at all! The damage happens when a nail tech doesn't prep your nails right before they put them on, and when they are removing them wrong. If you find yourself a quality nail tech, you won't have to worry about that and you'll have a great experience! :)
Thank you for that information... you are actually the first UA-camr to answer me
Wait so what's wrong with going without shaving for a month? My guy friend gets pedicures with me sometimes and he never shaves...is that like rude or gross?
Nothing at all!
TFS, what’s the difference between gel and acrylic?
They both come from the same "acrylic family" with their chemical makeup, but the obvious difference is what they look like. Acrylic is always a liquid and powder that the nail tech combines to form over your nails. Gel is always a goopy, jelly substance that comes in a bottle or pot.
Might seem a silly question but should clients tell you if they are ticklish before you start a pedicure or do you ask? Surely nail techs like yourself have ticklish feet to?
soon i’m actually going to begin doing acrylic nails for me and my sister for the first time
Thats awesome! I wish you the best of luck!
I have a nail app tomorrow and I'm never on my phone but where do I look if my nail tech isn't talking to me,like do I look at her look at my nails? What do I do 😂
Haha! I understand that, I was just referring to clients who have their phone in their hands the whole time!
can i get gel nails? i'm 11 i won't shake
if the nail salon you go to dose that cheese grater thingy, should you ask them no to use it?
Yeah, I would say no thanks!
Ok, can I wear short shorts coming in to get a pedicure, I normally wear 5 inch inseams that hits me 6.5 inches above my knees standing?
Can u do a vidieo on how to know if your nail tech is using MMA from EMA
That's an awesome idea! Thank you for the suggestion! :)
Love this! Also don't sit and ask where I got all my products and then state that your going to try it yourself!
Oh my goodness that would be the worst! People really surprise me sometimes, haha!
If you have a nail tech that doesn't really talk to you. It makes the time go faster if you're actually talking to somebody on your phone. Well she's doing one hand then you put the phone in your other hand very simple. When it's time to polish then you hang up and don't touch your phone while she's polishing
Thank you these are great tips
I'm so glad you enjoyed! Thanks so much for watching!
My sister want to take me to get my nails done but I bite my nails so I don’t know if I can get them done
You can still get them done. It may even help you with the nail biting :)
Being a nail tech and esthetician, I completely 100% agree! Preach girl, preach! Love it. There's been so many times where I just want just yell at my clients haha!!
Haha, thank you so much for watching!!
How do acrylics nails ruin your nails?
Acrylic doesn't! Filing too much or peeling off your acrylics is what causes the damage unfortunately
Interesting Point About The Cheese Grater Tool
I Had Someone Use That Once And Have Requested It Later On
Some Others Offer It As An Add-On
It seems to be very common, but not many people know how it can do damage to your skin. I wish more people knew!
@@polishedbyamy Yeah, I'm Honestly Shocked
I Remember It Definitely Tickled More Than Any Other Tool For Filing. lol
It Left My Big Toe Sore Afterwards, But That Was Taken Care Of With The Foot Rub.
Is There Honestly No Proper Way To Sanitize That Tool?
How Are Some Places Even Offering It, Or Even Able To Purchase It? Shouldn't Manufacturers Not Be Allowed To Make Or Sell It?
I would like to learn more about it. Is a great information 👍🏻
Heh.. I destroyed my nails because I tried to do my own acrylic nails
Good advice, very interesting video
Thank you for watching!
Sooooo that cheese grater looking thing is illegal??? Because that was used on me the last time I had my feet done...
Yep, it's illegal to use in a salon in my state and many others in the US!
Im in the nail place sometimes for over an hour so i need to answer or make a call to meet someone etc. A lot of times. Can i bring headphones?
That's a great idea actually! :)
Bewitched | Really, can you not be without a phone for 2 hours?
Eleonore Bon i dont care. Lawyers are assholes anyway.
To save money get some tinfoil cotton balls and nail polish remover 100% acetone and soak your nails off acrylic gel fingernail polish whatever
Yes! This is a great way to remove your enhancements at home before your appointment :)
Isn't a "Ped Egg" basically the credo blade?
Pretty much!
How do you remove the dead skin from feet?
Foot scrubs, foot paddles with 100/180 grit, and callus removers
In fact ,
now that i think of it...what you are asking your client to do should be a industry standard!
If I show my nail tech a picture of how I want my nails to be would they do it ?
Definitely! Just know that everyone's skill set is different so it can look a little diffrent than your photo!
Yes part 2 please
Definitely! Thank you for watching!
What does shaving your legs have to do with a pedicure??
If the nail salon you're going to has not cleaned where you soak your feet and you shaved prior too, you will have small scars from shaving that bacteria might get into causing an infection
I use my phone to show the nails I want 😂
I have many clients that do the same thing! It's super helpful
Useful
All very good points.
Thanks for watching girly!! :)
This video is so relatable cause my parents are nail technicians
Awesome! Thank you so much for watching! :)
Yes! Thank you! Lol finally someone speak up.
Thank you so much for watching girly! :)
Why does it matter how long it’s been since you shaved?
Marian Simms it doesn’t!
Why the hell is the cheese grater thing illegal
Because its a blade used to cut skin. In my state, nail techs aren't allowed to cut live skin since we aren't doctors, haha!
Oh crap 😳 I live in PA and they use them here. I wonder if it’s legal here 🤔
Totally agree!!
Thanks for watching!!
I'm a child and I want to get my nails done I'm 11 tho.... so what does that mean
It`s completely fine to have your nails done :). She is on about very young children.
Sally Shively oh ok
