Hats off to you Harri! You are one of the few who give Richard the credit he deserves. Karen's beauty and ANGELIC voice often overshadowed Richards IMMENSE contributions, not to mention her talented drum playing. Definitely a dynamic duo! Rest In Peace Karen.
Who remembers the movie of the same name starring “Lost in Space” star Billy Mumy?
If I'm right, I'm pretty sure this song was either wrote for that movie, or at least used in it. Obviously, I remember it well. ;)
I was right, it's actually the theme song from the movie. ;) This is from Wikipedia: "Bless the Beasts and Children" is the theme song to the 1971 eponymous film and was performed by the Carpenters. It was featured on the B-side to their hit, "Superstar". The song received enough of its own airplay that Billboard listed the single as "Superstar"/"Bless the Beasts and Children" on the Hot 100, charting first at number 16 for the week of 11/20/71, and then number 21 for the week of 11/27/71. Then "Bless The Beasts and Children" had its own run as an A-side charting on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually topping out at number 67.[1] In order to promote it, the Carpenters performed it on their television series, Make Your Own Kind of Music, as "F" for "Film Music".[2] It was nominated for a 1972 Academy Award for Best Song, but it lost to Isaac Hayes's "Theme from Shaft. The original soundtrack included two different versions of "Bless the Beasts and Children", the other being an orchestral instrumental arrangement by composers Barry DeVorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr., and the original "Nadia's Theme", which was listed as "Cotton's Dream". "Cotton's Dream" was also used as the theme song to the 1973 soap opera, The Young and the Restless, and later "Bless the Beasts and Children" was used when David Hasselhoff's character, Dr. "Snapper" Foster, had to say goodbye to his son in a dramatic 1982 episode of the series. The song was originally released on the original soundtrack, and a slightly different version was released on the Carpenters' 1972 LP, A Song for You on June 13, 1972.[6] The original soundtrack had a vibraphone playing the melody in the introduction, while the A Song for You version, released on the single, contained an oboe stating the melody. The two versions (soundtrack and album versions) faded out toward the end, but in 1985, Richard Carpenter re-mixed the song so it does not fade out in the end. He also added a harder bass-line.
I cry every time I watch it
Yes, part of it was filmed in the town I live in, Prescott, Arizona. A cheesy but heart-felt and enjoyable coming-of-age film.
The movie was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. Haven't seen that movie in decades
Noone in my 77 years has ever has such a magical voice like Karen. Sadly, she was taken away too soon. But her mellow tone will always bring tears.
they never made a song or sound that wasn't an instant hit.
❤❤❤
Will you accept really close and magical in her own right? Tori Holub, Harri reacted to her in March.
She has the most comforting voice ever. George Michael was like that too
Oo. They'd have made for a stunning duet.
Yes, Richard was responsible for picking, arranging, and singing backgrounds for these songs. He also played keyboards and wrote many of their hit songs!
This was the theme song of the movie of the same name. I believe it was the B side of the single "Superstar" I've always loved this song. One of their underrated and forgotten gems
We sang this in high school chorus after our teacher played this to show us how it SHOULD be sang! Strange the things you remember over the decades. As beautiful now as it was then!
Thank You. What a sentimental treasure this song is, and always has been. Peace.
What a great reminder. I haven't heard this song in decades and it was one of my favorite Carpenters songs. Always brought me to tears. Little children have no guile. The Carpenters did so well with all of their music. Thank you for this, it made my day.
Karen, one of a kind, Never to be replaced.
I agree, Richard deserves his flowers, as beautiful as Karen's voice was, we would have never been blessed with her talents without his genius. Every song selection, arrangement, etc. was to bring out the best in Karen's vocal ability, he was the talent and brains behind the Carpenters sound.
Karens voice was so pure and magical. So full of emotion. ❤❤
A song that's still relevant today with mass shootings. The Carpenters, always classy.
Still makes me cry 😢❤😢
Thank God Trump is going to win so things will hopefully get better!😢
Beautiful talented Karen. Harri, check out their live Mr. Guder performance, live at Budokan. You have a musical brain and I think you'll like that one.
Mr. Guder is one of my faves also. Check out this restoration from their Tonight Show appearance. Not to mention all the others on Harvey’s channel.

Oh, I love this song and also love The Carpenters, especially Karen. What a beautiful soul and singer she was! It's so very sad that she was afflicted with anorexia nervosa and passed away at such a young age. She certainly left a beautiful legacy of music for us to enjoy. May God bless her and her brothers.
She was such a beautiful person and her voice was like honey. Thank you Craig and Harri.
We loved that movie as kids.
Absolutely beautiful.
@HarriBest Reactions I have two words for you, " Ordinary Fool " another amazing song by the Carpenters that was recorded the year Karen passed away. A great song that features that beautiful Karen Carpenter voice.
I remember seeing this movie at the drive in theater when I was a kid. Song stuck in my mind all these years!
The solo instrument you are hearing on this is the English Horn, cousin of the Oboe, but with a deeper less "nasal" sounding tone, often used in the Carpenters' trademark sound.
Craig, You really choose a great one from the Carpenters. 👏
I've always loved this song so much. I am happy to see you react to it.
Such a wholesome & true song.
A track on a classic movie by the same name.
Bless the Beasts and the Children was the song written for the movie of the same name in 1971. The song was nominated for an Oscar for Best movie song of the year. I doubt it would have been nominated if it had not been done by the Carpenters' stellar arrangement/performance. As usual Karen's vocal performance send chills up and down my spine, especially during the "middle 8" or bridge.
Wow!!
I was just thinking about this song and wishing someone would react to it and here you are doing it!!!
Thanks!!!
I had forgotten all about this song thank you for playing it
Its been such a long time since I heard this song. Thank you. I remember seeing the movie and thinking how sad it was. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, but its about a group of misfit kids who get sent to a kind of outdoors camp. And in the story they end up trying to save a bunch of buffaloes from being hunted ... and a price is paid. A statement is made. Its a good movie and story. And this song makes me feel sad whenever I hear it.
Such a beautiful voice! I haven’t heard this in many years. Great choice and commentary. Thanks Harri and Craig 🌺✌️
Thanks for the reminder and the review. I read the book in junior high more than 50 years ago, and I’d forgotten about it, but just the title brought memories of both the song and the book flooding back.
I had forgotten his song!
Well done Harri. I see you’ve been informed about all the details regarding the history of this song.
Joe
It was a good movie.
Awesome request Craig bookended with an awesome reaction by da BestHarri.
Great song. Thanks for your reaction.
Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, and Barbara Streisand had the greatest voices of that era. Personally, I favor Linda because she sang more introspective songs from the best songwriters of the time.....and her variety of styles allowed her to use the full range of her voice. But the singers of today couldn't hold a candle to these women.
I couldn’t agree more! Linda had the most beautiful voice on the planet until it was stolen from her by supranuclear palsy 😢
Have you checked out Tori Holub? Harri did in March. “We’ve Only Just Begun (Cover)”
Karen gets my vote, hands down! I acknowledge the talent of the other two, but I can't think of one sing from either that I like. I always change the station when they come on, but I am always compelled to listen to KC!
Should have been released as a single. It was the flip side of Superstar. It would have been a hit!!
Notice how Richard always stands beside her on live performances. Not surprisingly, Karen had a negative self-concept. When performing she "knew" everyone was thinking how bad she looked. She always had to have Richard stand next to her hoping it would take some of the attention off her so she would be more comfortable.
Speaking With The Angel, by Ron Sexsmith. Many covers, Mary Black and Lucy Kaplansky's are my favorites. A really beautiful song.
"He don't know how to lie or undermine you
He don't know how to steal
How to deal or deceive
So leave him alone
Set him free
Cause he's speaking with the angel
Speaking with the angel that only he can see
You'd say he's so helpless
But what about you?
You don't pull the string
Don't you know anything?
Leave him alone, let him be
Cause he's speaking with the angel
Speaking with the angel that only he can see
Would you teach him 'bout heaven?
Would you show him how to love the earth?
Would you poison him with prejudice
From the moment of his birth?
He in the name of love
He in the blood of lamb
He that never lays blame
He don't even know his name
So leave him alone
Set him free
Cause he's speaking with the angel
Speaking with the angel (the very one)
That spoke to you and me
Oh do you remember?"

SEXSMITH, RONALD ELDON
This song was nominated in the 1972 Academy Awards for Best Song. Lost out to Isaac Hayes's "Theme from Shaft".
This song was featured in a movie of the same name "Bless the Beast and the Children", from the early 70s I believe. The ironic thing is that the kids in the movie are mostly little jerks, contrasting with the beauty of this song! Interesting movie though..
Great song for the vegan movement
Hey Bud from Arkansas here>>> you want to Jam>>> Listen to Aldo Nova>>> Fantasy!!!! It will rock your mind. It is from my generation30 plus years ago. ENJOY!
Songs like this make you realize how much Karen Carpenter is missed. To this day nobody can sing a ballad like Karen.
Karen in the top 10? How about in the top 1...
Sounds nice but Carpenters music too sappy, low key and milk toast for my tastes.
You're crazy....how old are you?!!!
Harris....Karen in the top 10?? She was #1!!!!!!
Listen to "Goodbye to Love" with its award-winning fuzz guitar solo and it just might change your mind. It was Richard's genius of an idea and shocked many older Carpenters fans. Tony Peluso was stunned when Richard suggested it.
"milquetoast"
Maybe you’ll change your mind as you get older. There are artists others like that I don’t. Some I changed my mind about and came to appreciate. Have always loved The Carpenters, though, and this song is better than I remembered.
A very special song.
Harri! You are the only one that ive heard react to this!!!
There have been many. Just search.
For Richard on his own, Harri, check out When Time Was All We Had from his 1987 solo album Time...Richard revisits the multitracked harmonies there and turns himself into an a cappella choir, it's pretty impressive...
This should have been a big hit!!!
The movie should have too...
Unfortunately, it was released as a "B" side so it never had a chance.
Karen was a vocal voice, but also soft and sweet. That is what HER special appeal. Love the Carpenters. Grew up with them, Like the Jackson 5, The who, Pink Floyd, CCR, Black Sabath, and Santana, etc Sad we don't have this MUSIC anymore.
Karen was the best femal vocalist at the time, such a beautiful song.
The song was the title track to the movie of the same. Such a bittersweet movie, it was on a list of movies to cover in my 11th grade English class in 1979/1980.
My high school chorus sang this song back in the late 70's. I haven't heard it since, and it all came right back to me with this reaction 🥰
Dont think it was one of their bigger selling singles but its one of my favorite songs by them. Its heart wrenching but also hopeful.
I forgot about this song
Hi Mr. Harri, CAR Carpenter, not cap.. ♠Mr.G..
