  • In this video, we show you how to teach your dog the Balance Perch, a fun trick that also helps to build hind-end and lateral strength. By placing their front paws on a bowl or perch, your dog can learn to pivot their back end into the heel position, as well as circle the perch in both directions while keeping their front feet in place. This technique is also useful for teaching sharp turns for obedience competition. Watch as we guide you through the steps to train your dog and build a stronger bond through this engaging and challenging exercise.

    Using hand target or a target stick really helped speed up my puppies pivot / rear end awareness! Thanks for posting great videos 👍

    Thank you so much for your structured lessons. I especially like that you give many options of teaching the same thing, whether it's positive reinforcement only (for those folks who don't want to use corrections), or a more balanced approach using all four quadrants of operant conditioning, without getting into the politics of each.
    I started reading about dog training and watching dog training videos a few months before bringing home my heeler. I have watched countless channels and tutorials (McCann dogs, Tom Davis, Leerburg, Cabral, Beckman, Zak George, Krueger) and they have all helped me with my dog in a big way, BUT...
    You are the only trainer that shows the process in a very structured way, i.e. your explanations leave no questions unanswered. I can always scroll through your playlists and find a quality lesson for me and my dog, and this makes your channel invaluable.
    Once again, thank you so much for all your hard work. I always get compliments about my dog's progress, and I make sure to mention your channel and how great you are at teaching PEOPLE how to train their dogs.

    What type of bowl do you use. I wanna get one to help clean up my dogs pivot into heel but am unsure how to buy it, or what household type things I could use instead. When she was a puppy we worked with her on a stool we had. We still have it. Would that work as well as a bowl. It is slightly higher than the bowl but still round and she used to be super comfortable doing this. Plus power steering in heel is one of the best things ever. I love that my dog can do it.

      I go to the horse department of my farm store and get a rubber bowl.

      Go to Tractor Supply or another agricultural feed store and get a black rubber feed bowl in the horse section. I use those to feed my horses and am going to use the bigger size to start with then use a small one like they are using in the video once the dogs understand the concept of putting their front feet on the bowl. I just started learning this in dog obedience class where we use a shallow terracotta plant pot dish upside down and I was struggling to teach the idea of it to my 2 yr old rescue GSD. This video is a light bulb moment.

    Nate, I’m working with a new puppy , the Pom I was working with is great as a pet not a service dog. This dog is a Cavilier, King Charles, very smart . Picks up anything taught her extremely fast and retains wgst she has learned. The one area she is having problems is in house training. Several reasons but being a puppy I always have given my dogs an inside space to go, a pee pad. Every dog I have had picks the pad up quickly and truly expected thus puppy to as well but not making that connection fir her. Any suggestions here. I have gone back to original process of house breaking but want to give an opportunity if I’m late getting gone. In the near future she will go with ne everywhere. Suggestions? The bowl she concluded in seconds even the pivot. I know the house training is off topic here but need a suggestion . 😮

      If you haven't already seen my potty training episodes, check out the two videos below. When a dog is having a hard time finding the target (pee pad), then I would suggest putting it in a container or on an elevated platform. This helps make the target much clearer and reduces the likelihood of the dog peeing on the floor. Here's an example of a container I might use for this process: amzn.to/43ffuoA.

    I want Tizzy to heel both left and right. I can teach "heel" to my left, but is there a common command for heel to the right? Thanks, vids are great. Weather is getting better and I can train outside more again! I also added high value freeze dried beef for reward. She's tolerating it very well.

    • @andrewporter9773

      Whatever you want to name it. Just saying RIGHT is a good command.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  Рік тому

      You can call it whatever you like. Some trainers will teach it in a different language. For example, "Heel on the left" could be "heel," while "Heel on the right" could be "Au Pied" (oh-pee-aye). The main thing is being consistent.
