- Loblaw and its parent company, George Weston Ltd., have agreed to pay $500 million to settle a class-action lawsuit regarding their involvement in an alleged bread price-fixing scheme. Here is Jay Strosberg, one of the lead lawyers.
it is a big win for this lawyer. There is price fixing all over so what is changed, we need to break up the monopolies.
Politicians and the rich are immune to jail,no matter how big of a crime they committed.
What a joke, loblaw still will win with their high prices for everything.
Bread is just a start, just think of the money being made after COVID. From food manufacturing, transportation and the retail who control pricing. This may be a shock!! it is not the government, it is pure capitalism greed for the few. When I hear it is Trudeau fault tells me people are limited in thought when billionaires control what you hear. $$$$$

Instead of giving out checks, lower the price of bread across the board instead so the payback is proportional - if you buy a lot of bread, you get more benefit etc.

Ok but there should be such a recourse for every single item sold by Loblaws.
They will probably ask people for the original receipt to prove that they bought the bread
They didn't ask me, they issued 20 store credit about 11 years ago. Rebate is done and gone...
40 million Canadians with the average family containing 4 people means 10 million families in Canada. Assuming that the average family consumes 1 pack of bread a week and Loblaws has been doing this scheme for 16 years and made $1.50 per pack of bread, Loblaws has made $8,320,000,000. And that is the best case scenario assuming that it has not been going on for more than 16 years and they only made $1.50 per loaf of bread.

How do we win? We save on future purchases of bread that people need to eat no matter the price, how will people come forward with past purchases? Bread that has been consumed long ago likely receipts destroyed with the consumed bread. Don't hold your breath for that check. With millions eating bread each week that check will likely add up to 0.33$ per person while everyone dished out 100$s.

SO. when is Sobey's, Walmart ect.. going to court? When this bread price fixing surfaced, Loblaw's was offering its customers $25 gift cards that you had to apply for on line.I haven't heard of anything from the other grocery chains. PC Optimum keeps track of your purchasing history. If you compare the amount of bread purchased by a household of 2 people compared to a family of 4, clearly a family of 4 spend more on bread. Is that going to be a factor? So many questions

Complete joke. $500M is absolutely nothing. Canadians are going to get like $2 each. They fixed the price of bread for years and that inflated price remains elevated because of that scheme. Not to mention the price increases of all of the bread substitutes that also increases over time because of bread being elevated. That settlement should have been 50-100X higher.
