Same for me. I consider this one of the best bad guy performances of any movie that came out in the 80s. Even today, a lot of actors don't match Rickman's performance as Hans. He still lingers in my mind as one of the most vicious, evil guys in modern movies right next to Hannibal Lecter.
The late great Alan Rickman made Hans Gruber one of the most iconic villains in movie history. According to Rickman on the Die Hard featurette he wasn't playing the villain. He was playing somebody who wanted certain things in life, had made certain choices, and goes after them. Alan of course made the right choice of going into acting and given us a whole range of fantastic characters to enjoy time and time again. RIP Alan Rickman you will be missed

Kasiek Dropińska I just came from a Texas music (In Demand) vid and saw that allot of women found Alan to be attractive. As a straight male, I can't really give an opinion that (looks just like a man to me) but what I can say is that Alan was a far superior actor to Bruce Willis. Completely upstaged and outclassed him in Die Hard. Did the same thing to Kevin Costner in Prince of Thieves. It's why not many A list Hollywood actors were keen to work with him. The problem with guys like Bruce Willis is that they're fairly one dimensional. They can act a good tough guy cheesy hero but that's about it. When they come up a against a guy like Alan, their weaknesses as actors become evident.
Dave I never thought about that, but what you said is absolutely right. I love Alan's acting, I thing he was one of the best actors of our times, I just never thought about comparing him to the others. He wasn't afraid of any role, even controversial, and it's even more impressive when you think about the fact that he was a British. Also he was gifted with such a deep voice and he knew how to use it. Just an incredible actor, such a shame we won't see him amymore. And as to women being attracted to him, if you are curious, Alan wasn't handsome in this classic kind of way. He had crooked nose, thin lips, his teeth weren't perfect and as he grew older he gained weight. But there is something in him, when I watch him, that makes my heart melt. And I am 21 yo and most of the films that he played in that I watched were in which he was like 40-50 yo xd Some men just have it, others don't.

@@epsilonalphaargo1948 Yes and no. Keep in mind that the pre-Craig era of Bond worked on the concept of a "floating timeline" with a soft reboot from Moore to Dalton (short version: in 1987 Bond's age was rolled back to that of a man in his late 30's/early 40's after we had just spent 1962-1985 watching the character visibly age on screen, but some key aspects such as the death of Tracy were kept in canon) While Trevelyan's age in 1995 is never mentioned, we do know he was 6 when his parents died. For the record, Sean was 36 when Goldeneye came out, Pierce was 42. If we use Pierce's age as the reference point and assume that 006 was even just three or four years older than Bond, that would potentially put Alec's year of birth at either 1949 or 1950. It isn't uncommon for an actor to play a role that is +/- 10 years from their actual age depending on how they look, and it just so happens that both actors played younger versions of their characters within the same film (Goldeneye opens with the mission in the USSR in 1986, then we get a timeskip to 1995) The key thing is this: Alec's DOB doesn't HAVE to be during WWII, just so long as his backstory deals with the fact that his parents were Cossacks, they survived Stalin's death squads, then his father eventually snapped and killed himself and his wife. Timeline wise, it's still close enough to those real life events. The key thing here is Alec was old enough to remember the event, know a little bit of the history of his family, then let his anger build over a number of years once he was old enough to understand everything a bit better. With all that said, obviously the plot points wouldn't work again when Goldeneye was remade and used as the basis for a 2010 video game set in Craig's era. The best thing about this movie……Bruce was great but ALAN RICKMAN WAS OVER THE TOP! Rickman, not only a great actor but VERY HANDSOME and that VOICE! I would PAY to have Rickman’s voice as my GPS! Think about it, ladies…….😊 RIP, BEAUTIFUL 🥀
Easily one of my favourite Christmas movies, not least thanks to the formidable Mr. Alan Rickman. Thank you for being time and time again the best villain in any movie you starred; we sorely miss you.
You were an absolutely master at acting Mr Rickman. Thank you for many hours of fun and drama, thank you sir and may your soul be in a place of happinness and no pain at all, you deserve it, Im sure.
EXACTLY! I would have loved to see how Sean Connery's James Bond would have dealt with him even though that would not be possible. But, he should have be asked to be a villain in a James Bond movie.
keepdancingmaria Not your definition, you mean. The fact of the matter is he was not recognized by an institution that supposedly recognizes actors for their brilliant performances. That is an insult to him and many other actors that have never even been nominated, let alone won an academy award.
@@MsAppassionata That's still not the one and only definition of "Severely underrated" The fact of the matter is he had steady work over decades, many incredible roles, is rated extremly highly for his talent and his generous nature by his directors and his costars and coworkers, and has a rabid body of fans (including you and me!) A single institution failing to do its job does not make him " *Severely* underrated" with all that other rating going on.
The hans gruber character was kind of new ground in character development. But with little exception, most antagonists were portrayed as eccentric mad men or satan loving sadists. Hans gruber comes off as a patient/educated man who is articulate. And above all else, he has a european accent and wears a business suit. If you look at movie antagonists after him, they follow the same principles and idea. Hannibal lecter comes to mind. It's been said that the actors who play the very best villains are usually extremely nice and down to earth people. Alam rickman was no exception the rule.
LOL, As they say, "Yippee ki yay" Such an iconic and comedic film! Every aspect of it was amazing, the storyline, the characters, the soundtrack, and the action were all great and literally legendary! Decided to watch it on Christmas day again, and what a film. Hard to find anything similar these days, what a time. Such an amazing cast as well, especially with Willis in his prime. So sad to see him in the condition he is now, and hearing about the passing of Gilyard, few months back. But we can all agree on this movie and their talent will always have an everlasting legacy. If you're looking for a perfect action-packed, film; This is it! Unforgettable.
One of the greatest films ever made ! And two of the most iconic heroes and villains to ever grace the screen together . John McLane and Hans Gruber ... Rip Alan Rickman
This is when I first noticed the beautiful Alan Rickman. Alan Rickman MADE this movie! Some of the cast members (including Willis) had such CHEESY lines throughout the movie. Rickman's character was AWESOME! The part that I really like us when Hans said, " shoot the glass". Something about JOW he said it and also that beautiful profile of his when hiding behind a desk. Something just CLICKED and from then on I have always had a huge crush on him. Today is 5 years since we lost him. To never hear that beautiful voice again is heartbreaking. RIP, BEAUTIFUL 🌹
yepyepyep...one of the BEST movie scenes EVER...I remember watching this movie with some kind of cable FREE bee...oh...my...god...I told my whole family to watch it...LOL! so many awesome lines in it....REST IN PEACE Mr. Rickman...this movie would NOT be the same without you! So sorry you passed before the age of 70...very sad!
+valnaples A good action film is usually always made great by the villain. Bruce Willis was great too, but Rickman almost steals the show, and that's a good thing.
My three favourite movie villains: Zod (Terrence Stamp), Darth Vader (James Earl Jones), and of course, Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). I hadn't heard that he had passed. Such a talented actor.
My favorite movie villains of all time: 1. Anton Chigurh 2. Davy Jones 3. Hans Gruber 4. Magneto (Ian Mckellen) 5. Pennywise the Clown (IT) 6. Alex Delarge (Clockwork Orange) 7. General Hans Landa (Inglorious Basterds)
+Nomadic Narko my top ten villains 1.Darth Vader 2. Hans Gruber 3. Alonzo(Training Day) 4. Hannibal Lector 5. The Joker(The Dark Knight) 6. Khan(Star trek II: the wrath of khan) 7. Frank Costello 8. Anton Chigurh 9. Freddy Kruger 10. The Terminator
1 Dr Hannibal Lecter 2 Hans Gruber 3 The shark from Jaws 4 T-800 5 T-1000 6 Darth Vader 7 The wicked witch of the west 8 Dr Evil 9 Michael Corleone 10 Predator
First time I remember seeing Alan Rickman, was in the role of the devious, scheming Obadiah Slope, in the BBC adaptation of two of Anthony Trollope's novels: The Barchester Chronicles. It was immediately apparent, that here was an actor of the highest calibre. Much missed.
Still miss the guy- what a total loss to cinema - I wanted to grow old with him on screen! No one has that voice - even loving him in Harry Potter repeats.
what a good legend alan rickman was in his time. it's sad knowing that he's no longer with us, but we should take comfort in knowing that he will always be with us in spirit.
2:02 just another American who saw too many movies as a child, another orphan from a bankrupt culture who thinks he's John Wayne, Rambo, Marshal Dillon. The most truthful line in the movie. Love Hanz, R.I.P Alan Rickman.
When Hans looks at the radio like he can't believe what he's hearing😂 I was fortunate enough to see this when it was released at the DRIVE IN!!! I still can't believe how fortunate I was
Another great thing about Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber is that they didn't even need to cast a German actor and Rickman didn't have to pull off an overly convincing German accent (though the character did occasionally speak it). It was the despicable nature of the character in that situation and the way the actor protrayed him that stood far above the background context. A typical action villain that was ruthless but also had a degree of charisma as well.
Watched this on Chirstmas Eve. They really nailed everything. Glad to have finally watched it. One of the greatest action as well as Christmas movies of all time. An iconic, legendary, standout, and amazing film. A film filled with so many iconic sayings like "Yippee ki yay", references about other films, actors, and much more to even mention as well as say about this film. Like its not one of those Christmas movies about joy or happiness but a Christmas film, that is filled with action which is what makes it so unique. Its a film about emotion, being a hero, fighting, against all odds and etc. Like every single part of it was amazing, the story, the characters, the music, the action throughout the film; where no matter what, you were always on the edge of your seat as if you were the character, constantly experiencing his emotion, what was occurring, his humor, the action, it was like a roller coaster of emotions that is honestly better explained if you felt it as well as watched it since you were constantly cheering him on as well as worrying what was going to happen next, and him coming out as a hero, his legacy, alongside saving the day. Like every year, I always watch a Christmas movie with my twin brother, since he always recommends new Christmas films to watch together on Christmas and when he mentioned this, which is a film we've never watched before only until now, it really goes to show how amazing it was & probably his best pick & by far one if not, the greatest action film of all time as well as Christmas film of all time due to its uniqueness. Like I honestly can't believe how this film came out in 1988, and how advanced it was for its time, especially with how great it must've been in that era. It's honestly hard to find anything unique to this type of film like what a time it must've been in that era to be alive. Such an excellent cast, especially Willis who honestly never fails when it comes to these types of films especially when it was in his prime. Sad to see the condition he is in now, wishing him all the best as well as hearing about Gilyard passing away a couple of months back which honestly makes you look back to the film and see how amazing he was. Same with Willis when he was in his prime. Like the amount of people that still watch this film and mention about it, really goes to show how much of a legacy it has, and how its by far the greatest action movie of all time. Truly unforgettable, especially every scene which was just so iconic, amazing and so much to say about this film. Like its a neverending page of words. Like if you're picking out a perfect action film to watch that will always make you on the edge of your seat filled with emotion and always focused this is your film to watch. 5 stars.
It might also have something to do with the fact that the ending (and not only) was so unrealistic. Who in the right mind believes that one (annoying) cop kills an entire group of highly trained criminals? I might have been tempted to trust/like the movie more if for instance Hans and the cop died together, but nooo one guy kills all. Not believable.
Moments where John should have lost: rooftop battle 3 vs 1 where only Karl should kill him; 4 vs 1 at office level with glass; an exhausted and battered John vs a pretty much fresh Karl; the quick draw ending where John relies on distraction plus scotch tape with only two bullets left while his wife is used as a human shield, and the rooftop explosion after he was being sniped by the FBI.
OMG I knew I wasn’t the only one. Why is Die Hard stereotyped as a “men only movie”? If it was intended to be only for men, they wouldn’t have made the villain a suave, smooth, classy good looking guy.
The cavalry is here! The cavalry will, ultimately, spend the rest of the movie bumbling around outside, but damn this felt good in the moment; like our hero had finally caught a break.
First time I saw this movie, I got a good impression of Hand Gruber, I was a teenager in that time and I thought, if I am a villain, I would like to be like this guy..!
Some of the greatest movie quotes. My all time favourite "it's gonna need a paint job and a shit load of screen doors." I have used that one irl many times.
What a great villain Hans Gruber was! I like how Rickman played him suave, sophisticated, charismatic and highly educated.
And not ill-tempered/crazy. He let's his position of power work for him.

Mr . Tagkaki , if you want to talk about industrialization and men's fashion we can do this all day but I'm afraid work must intrude , and my associate Theo has some questions for you. Sort of fill in the blanks question.
Funny that," Rambo." was mentioned in this scene, as Sylvester Stallone had passed up on this role of John Mcclane, before Bruce Willis was chosen.
Daniel Trimboli good call
Daniel Trimboli thanks god for that... Willis was perfect in this role
It would have been good, a lot different, but good. John McTiernan would have brought out Sly's best acting.
@@charlesdjones1 I dont think a Stallone as John mcClane would have made a cultural hit as sizeable. Bruce Willis at his prime was god tier.
So was Schwarzenegger.
This Masterpiece of a Movie has my Favourite Hero and Villain Chemistry! I just Love the banter and taking the piss out of each other between these Two Awesome characters! Rest In Peace Alan Rickman you were a Phenomenal Actor.
RIP Alan Rickman.
A great movie and a particularly good performance by him.
That could be dangerous...
Down girl…
He's now in heaven earning his twenty percent
EXCELLENT COMMENT! It deserved an all caps compliment. :)
Well, he IS The Voice Of The One True God.
Easily one of my favourite Christmas movies, not least thanks to the formidable Mr. Alan Rickman. Thank you for being time and time again the best villain in any movie you starred; we sorely miss you.
Fun fact: Die Hard was Alan Rickman’s first movie role
No it wasn't it was actually Busted in 1982 it was a TV movie tho
Krazy Hatter than first big screen movie roll
Robin Hood?
@@JoseGonzalez-zo2zn POT was made three years after this film.
First movie where he created one of the most spectacular characters in movie history!
One of the best films of the 80's.
First Die Hard was the best of the franchise.
You were an absolutely master at acting Mr Rickman. Thank you for many hours of fun and drama, thank you sir and may your soul be in a place of happinness and no pain at all, you deserve it, Im sure.
Hans, not Snape, was Rickman’s best movie role! I’m surprised they didn’t cast him as a James Bond villain.
RIP Rickman!
EXACTLY! I would have loved to see how Sean Connery's James Bond would have dealt with him even though that would not be possible. But, he should have be asked to be a villain in a James Bond movie.
According to imdb, he was asked to play 006 in goldeneye but passed
@@troyandrew6154 damn that's a shame he would've nailed that
He's not German enough to play a Bond villain
Could have worked against Timothy Dalton's version....!
This one villain is more handsome and sexy than the hero
You're absolutely right ❤️❤️❤️
Agreed ❤❤❤❤❤
Lol if you need therapy hehe just teasing
I really wish he'd won lol
beauty and the beast
one of the all time great performances. Severely underrated actor
He was never underrated.
I think he was. He was never recognized by the Academy Awards.
@@MsAppassionata That is not the definition of "Severely Underated"
keepdancingmaria Not your definition, you mean. The fact of the matter is he was not recognized by an institution that supposedly recognizes actors for their brilliant performances. That is an insult to him and many other actors that have never even been nominated, let alone won an academy award.
@@MsAppassionata That's still not the one and only definition of "Severely underrated" The fact of the matter is he had steady work over decades, many incredible roles, is rated extremly highly for his talent and his generous nature by his directors and his costars and coworkers, and has a rabid body of fans (including you and me!)
A single institution failing to do its job does not make him " *Severely* underrated" with all that other rating going on.
RIP Alan Rickman. You were the greatest actor to ever live!
No one cares about your personal belief.

One of my all time favourite movies. Alan Rickman's velvet voice made it even better.
Amazing actor. My eyes are wet already. I'm still not over his death.
One of the Best & most iconic action movie villains in history
R.I.P. Alan Rickman
I love how John finds the cigarettes and is like "these are very bad for you" and in the very next shot he's got one in his mouth.
Always find it interesting how people know how bad smoking is but they do it anyway
Well , he did not know if he Will survive so , a cigar doesnt matter in that Situation hahaha

The funniest part is he’s giving health advice to an already dead man.
You're GenZ aren't you?
The hans gruber character was kind of new ground in character development. But with little exception, most antagonists were portrayed as eccentric mad men or satan loving sadists. Hans gruber comes off as a patient/educated man who is articulate. And above all else, he has a european accent and wears a business suit. If you look at movie antagonists after him, they follow the same principles and idea. Hannibal lecter comes to mind. It's been said that the actors who play the very best villains are usually extremely nice and down to earth people. Alam rickman was no exception the rule.
mindeloman It was Rickman’s idea to wear a suit. They originally wanted him to dress like the others.
U NAILED IT BROS ICON STYLISH ALAN PATIENT SUPER COOL DUDE
RIP Alan Rickman
Always.
Hans was the quintessential movie villain class and humor plus Rickmans hilarious attempt at an American accent when he's trying to fool McLane
"Mister mystery guest" something about that line :) ONE OF ALL TIME BEST CLASSICS, THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THIS ANYMORE 💚
I actually cheered for this guy.
"by the time they figure it out ..well b sitting on a beach earning 20%" fav line of all time !!

Bobsuruncle Mum What?! You’ve never seen Die Hard? Shame on you!

Love it. Hans is as cold as freshly shaven ice, but now he's like, "Shit just got real."
Always........RIP Alan Rickman,we love you after all this time
Still miss the guy- what a total loss to cinema - I wanted to grow old with him on screen! No one has that voice - even loving him in Harry Potter repeats.
1:10: John: *mimics wrong answer buzzer* “Sorry Hans, wrong guess!”
Hahahahaha! Love that!
I like Hans' facial expression when he did that.
What a badass Rickman was.
RIP. Great actor, one of the best bad guy actors. This and prince of thieves is my favorites.
This movie is the incarnation of being at the right place at the right time
Or rather just pure luck
what a good legend alan rickman was in his time. it's sad knowing that he's no longer with us, but we should take comfort in knowing that he will always be with us in spirit.
Best action movie of the 80´s
*of all time
Alan Rickman was a legend - my sister & I loved Hans Gruber when we were kids XD
Watching the movie right now, I still miss him :( Alan Rickman and Robin Williams are the only celebrities whose deaths made me cry.
Alan Rickman and John Ritter are the ones (for me) that was crushing. RIP JR & AR 🌹🌹🌹
2:02 just another American who saw too many movies as a child, another orphan from a bankrupt culture who thinks he's John Wayne, Rambo, Marshal Dillon. The most truthful line in the movie. Love Hanz, R.I.P Alan Rickman.
Alan Rickmans best role. RIP Alan!
Alan Rickman pure class he gave this film class.
Alan Rickman was so smooth here. His role here made me a permanent fan.

When Hans looks at the radio like he can't believe what he's hearing😂 I was fortunate enough to see this when it was released at the DRIVE IN!!! I still can't believe how fortunate I was
Best movie villain of all time.
I can’t belive I watched this movie a few years ago and NOW I’m realising it was Alan Rickman... I’m truly sorry Alan!
(imitates buzzer)
SORRY, HANZ, WRONG GUESS!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO FOR "DOUBLE JEOPARDY!", WHERE THE SCORES CAN REALLY CHANGE?
"Unless you want to open the front door for me" the last mistake Gruber would ever make.
Hans Gruber and his brother Simon Gruber are both great villains!
CAN U TELL ME HIS BROTHER ACTED IN WHICH MOVIE OF ICON ALAN
Another great thing about Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber is that they didn't even need to cast a German actor and Rickman didn't have to pull off an overly convincing German accent (though the character did occasionally speak it). It was the despicable nature of the character in that situation and the way the actor protrayed him that stood far above the background context. A typical action villain that was ruthless but also had a degree of charisma as well.
This was one of the top 10 action movies of all time, a pretty high honor if you ask me
Watched this on Chirstmas Eve. 5 stars.
I find hans more likable than the other guy
It might also have something to do with the fact that the ending (and not only) was so unrealistic. Who in the right mind believes that one (annoying) cop kills an entire group of highly trained criminals? I might have been tempted to trust/like the movie more if for instance Hans and the cop died together, but nooo one guy kills all. Not believable.
@@potocatepetl considering he had 1 to 1 encounters it's not completely out of the picture
AGREE WITH U BUDDY ICON ALAN
It's now been two years since your transition...thank you for leaving the rest of us with movie moments such as these.
D McElveen I miss him so much. I miss looking forward to whatever he was going to do next. 😭
Hans' expression at 1:15 is priceless.

He's too attractive.
Ly Phan he's bloody gorgeous and I'm a red blooded male!
What does too attractive mean? Too attractive for what?
MsAppassionata too much to handle as a mortal
He really was. I’m on his side, I can’t help it. Sorry, Willis. Rickman was 🔥.
OMG I knew I wasn’t the only one. Why is Die Hard stereotyped as a “men only movie”? If it was intended to be only for men, they wouldn’t have made the villain a suave, smooth, classy good looking guy.
Just watched this on Christmas day with the mom and it was so awesome
My favourite HansGruber- line is immer noch: schieß dem Fenster😂😂😂😂love it
Kaya x Shoot the glass! 😀
The cavalry is here! The cavalry will, ultimately, spend the rest of the movie bumbling around outside, but damn this felt good in the moment; like our hero had finally caught a break.
He was such a goddamn legend!!!
