The great story of gen 5 makes the mediocrity of sword and shield even more painful, the only half decent aspect of the story was Hop’s character arc and Rose is easily the worst villain in Pokémon, I’d rather have a generic Giovanni type of villain over what we got with the mess that was Rose.

Yeah I don’t get the whole familiarity thing, it feels like a Pokémon game bumped up to 11.
When ever i played a pokemon game i only use the regional pokemon. Because i dont see a reason to use the older ones again when there are new ones to try out
If only the pokemon weren't ugly.
@@insertnamehere658 i dont remember any pokemon games that have not ugly pokemon. They exist in every game and the reason you might find more ugly ones in Gen 5 is because they have the most pokemon. So of course there will be more you might dislike
@@azunkor422 no, I straight up dislike more than half of the pokemon but like the other half quite a lot.
Gen 5 was pretty much my introduction to pokemon so I never felt that disconnect to the other games. Personally I think Black/White and Black/White 2 are the best pokemon games and there was never a downside of that disconnect for me so I never understood the hate.
As someone who played white quite late I never felt any disconnect all regions have their own flair and the lack of mons from other parts of the world was part of the story if I remember correctly that's why bw2 had them there it's really a subjective argument
I think platinum, xy (unpopular opinion) and HGSS were better than bw1. BW2 can be argued.
Exact same
I played from the very beginning back in Gen 1, but never felt that disconnect others say is very present in Gen 5. I loved Gen 5, even though Gen 2 will my be my all time favorite. Especially more so that I got to explore a region with all new Pokemon (at the time), and wasn't forced to wade through Gen 1 Pokemon through most of the game to get any of the new generational Pokemon. Or had to go through an ENTIRE post game to get the new Pokemon... plus the story.
B2/W2 was good, but I started to feel the disconnect when X/Y released. Oras brought me back, but then thereafter it never lived back up.
Unova was intentionally disconnected from the other regions, since Unova is based off the United States, while the other regions before it were based off Japan. That's probably why the older pokemon were locked behind post-game in the original Black and White. That, and Black and White were supposed to be soft-reboots of the series as well, hence why the Pokemon designs were similar to gen 1's pokemon designs, and why they put around 151 new species.
Unova didn't feel exactly like most pokemon games at the time, but that was for the better. What's ironic though, is that the people who started with the Unova games, including myself, know it as what pokemon is supposed to be, or the peak of pokemon, and want something similar for the newer titles.. which will sadly never come.
Edit: I personally also find the art style of Black and White to be the best in the series. I love the charm that the 3D world gives off compared to all the other games in the series, and how clean the game looks if you run it on an emulator.
This!!!!!
Couldn't have said it better. Took the words right out of my mouth

This man lowkey dissing Game Freak by saying that the story is so good that it looks fan made
the fact gen 5 is getting so much love recently really shows how pokemon hasn’t changed very much since it’s debut
I feel like it shows the opposite; how much the franchise has developed since its debut
The reason (from what I remember) why people didn't like gen 5 was because it was a massive change and the fandom, which consisted of more genwunners back then, didn't appreciate it.
Now that gen 5 is older, the younger fans (I don't mean children but teens) who played bw as their first games regard it as the classics and golden age of Pokemon. So really, I think since the franchise evolved so much and the most common demographic at the time weren't used to it, it shows how much Pokemon has changed.
@@bierangtamen I also think Pokemon XY have a similar situation. Lots of people now ive seen come out saying they like it.
@@thenintendogamer1542 Yeah exactly, that’s a really good example
When it first came out it was so new and everyone was bashing it but now younger fans who started off with xy/oras/smusum seem to enjoy it for what it is

@@thenintendogamer1542 I didn't like XY/Gen 6, but ORAS was a masterpiece and the greatest part about Gen 6. I loved the big change they did with the new visuals in XY, but I just did not like XY because it was very easy compared to the past games, and it felt like an imcomplete game; excluding the battle frontier, ORAS was a complete game and had a better post-game than XY had. Even though I grew up with Gen 1 and Pokemon Blue was my first ever Pokemon game, Gen 3 or Gen 4 is probably my favorite. Hoenn and Sinnoh were just a wonderful time for Pokemon, same with Gen 5/Unova.
IMO:
Gen 1 - 9/10
Gen 2 - 8.5/10
Gen 3 - 10/10
Gen 4 - 11/10 (11/10 because of the HGSS remakes; HGSS definitely had the best post-game content)
Gen 5 - 9/10
Gen 6 - 7/10 (If it was just ORAS for sure 9.5/10, but it would be 10/10 if it had the battle frontier)
Gen 7 - 9/10
Gen 8 - 6/10
Ngl, N is probably the best written character in the entire franchise
In B/W he was but in 2 it was kinda off at least to me
Tbh I think Lillie is better
I've said it in other comments sections and ill say it again, this man manages to be your rival, the main antagonist and champion simultaneously. And let me just say that in black and white, having to beat the elite four, then having to make your way through N's castle and finally beat N's legendary dragon after catching your own on the spot is by far the greatest concept I've ever seen in a pokemon game. This game and its sequels are easily the best pokemon games in my opinion of course. Platinum is right behind it.
It is
Imagine if they’d be generous enough to let us PLAY AS N. Omfg. The possibilities for depth and exploration of that story.
I think one of the reason gen 5 feels so different from the first few gens is that Unova feels very lived in and developed. All of the regions before it felt like they were lived in, but you were going on a unique adventure, finding rare Pokemon and bumping into other travelers along the way. Unova feels like you are going along a path that many other people have gone on before, and are going on with you as you travel. The 3D games also have this, as the routes in the 3D games feel way smaller than the ones in the 2D games. I think GameFreak making Unova feel more developed makes sense and helps the story, but it also makes it harder to believe that there is an ancient ruins with a Volcarona hiding inside of it, when it is right outside of the most populated city in any Pokemon game. (also that there is a boat in the city that takes you to an island with a mythical on it)
I totally agree on this. And N is probably the only rival character in the franchise that, story wise, makes you feel like the world is not here just for you as you might feel it in older gens. You are part of it, and N established the importance of the Other really well.
It is possible Gen 5 games are objectively the best Pokemon games every released. Even me, I acknowledged my love for gen 4 and 3 as being due to the prime effect. I played them and loved them before, thus it's easy to downplay Unova.
It is undoubtedly one of the best regions GF crafted

This lack of familiarity is what makes Generation 5 great
I remember when a friend of mine came to my house years ago (around 2011-2012) and I was so eager to show him Pokemon Pearl, but maaann... My jaw dropped the moment he showed me Pokemon Black on his DS. The graphics were so innovative at that point in time (especially in the eyes of a child), and it's this lack of familiarity that made BW so unique and special.
The release of these games was a bold action taken by Game Freak which led to arguably the most successful reboot of the Pokemon franchise.

What I’ve loved most about BW and BW2 is the story, you can tell there was a lot more thought put into the plot and the characters and how everything feels a bit more alive and like a region that is really a place where people and Pokémon would thrive, not to mention that music tho

As someone who grew up on Gen 5, and is born and raised in New York, it’s upsetting that people didn’t like Gen 5. Unova had some of the best music in the entire franchise and an amazing story. Even if it didn’t have familiarity, the fact that it was different was nice. Something to set it apart. And when they had the Gym leaders show up and fight the Seven Sages, it was amazing. Fighting the Villian instead of the Champion was an amazing difference. The Route number being reset made it feel fresh. You can fight gym leaders from other regions and champions of other regions. The rivals were different. Like Silver in Gen 2, Gen 5 rivals had an actual story. Bianca was always underleveled when you fought her and she always felt weak and she acknowledged it and didn’t know what she wanted to do. Her dad trying to bring her back to Nuvema and Elesa stepping in was every emotional. Hugh would get very mad when a Pokémon is missing and his personality changes because of his sister having her purloin stolen 5 years ago. Throughout the game he is trying to learn where the Purrloin is. When he received the Liepard his aggressive personality vanishes and he just freezes. The rivals in Gen 5 were better than others. Barry was annoying, Blue was bland, May/Brenden was bland. Silver had a story which set him apart. The differences between Gen 5 and the other games made it feel...unique and special.
"Barry was annoying" THANK YOU. Peoople say he was a good rival, but.... his team is easy to counter, with the exception of the staravia, His personality got old fast, and in the anime he was the most obnoxious little shit.

So... does that mean sentret is gen 2 ratatta? how about "pidove is gen 5 pidgey"? it's the same has saying "taillow is gen 3 pidgey". Truth
that's an exaggeration. Gen 5 (though I love it) doesn't feel like it's part of the entire Pokemon world. Like ttar pointed out, xy and kanto have that snorlax that blocks the road. Sure it might've been fanservice or nostalgia bait, but it feels like "snorlax blocking the road" is just something that happens sometimes (they even made an item to resolve that issue). Everything in gen 5 was too unique for its overall good
I feel like the only reason why it is so disconnected is because Unova was the first region to not be based on an area from Japan, so it made sense to disconnect it from the other regions
@@ono_o_o b/w and b2/w2 were completely different from the normal games.....the story was much darker and deeper. I agree that they could have some nostalgia here and there, but them adding a whole ass snorlax blocking the road or Kanto starters is too much, just way too much service for Gen Wunners
I was alienated as a kid when black and white came out especially because many of the "new" Pokemon felt like uneeded clones. The diversity of the region was lacking, which was later fixed in the sequels

@@perritoshido5845 I kind of disagree on the topic of XY for a start and like BW better for it because BW does a really good job compared to other games of introducing type matchups with the first gym and just really does a good job with introducing mechanics though debatably S/M and US/UM does it better, the simplicity of no Z-Moves or megas or true gimmik and none of the truly off putting difficulty of USUM I think makes it worse so maybe USUM but IMO XY does not introduce types well and kind of just carries you through the game not really teaching you many mechanics as Mega Lucario basically wins the game for you and that's that. FR/LG are good for mechanics as well but I think the just lack of different Pokémon from later generations makes it worse as well
@@rtasdsasfrt7671 in XY you have a lot of Pokémon variety in general to see all the different types and experiment yourself, and while the game is easy, it isn't too story focused so it should be perfect for a new player.
As much as it sucks, Let’s Go is a better pick
Gen5 wasn’t like Pokémon, but that doesn’t mean it was a bad game. Just not what you’d expect, and for some that was great, for others it wasn’t. Simple as that.
Gen4 with gen5 graphics looks awesome
Ikr to me just because something is different than the original doesn’t mean it’s bad there are tons of other games that do different things
Honestly, I feel like Gen 5 was the start of “hate on the current generation and call it ‘the worst’ generation”. Happened with this, happened with Sword and Shield, and now it’s happening with Scarlet and Violet. Watch it happen with Gen 10, I bet it’s going to happen come 2025!
No it wasn’t that was gen 4 I swear I remember the hate Sinnoh got before gen 5 came out.
The argument for "they fluked with the Kalos region by bringing back the gen 1 starters to get rid of that disconnect" ignores something though. It WASN'T a fluke. What pokemon has done for every other game that they don't do for gen 5 is they appeal to nostalgia to keep older fans buying newer games. The main reason fans didn't like gen 5 is because it doesn't have older pokemon they're familiar with. And when Gamefreak saw that, they made BW2 to correct that and some of the other buggy problems with BW. They realised bringing older pokemon back makes fans happy and brings in more money and went "well what if we offer them the Kalos starters but integrate them into the gen6 power-system so that we can get much older fans to still buy the games". It's all a marketing thing. And that's what pokemon has done since then- appeal to nostalgia instead of trying risky cool new things to keep fans attached. Here's bosses from old games! Here's remakes! Here's a really low risk game where you can sweep everyone because it's easy!
The feeling of discovery and exploration and wonder gen 5 offered because it did something new isn't "disconnect". It's just not appealing to nostalgia like all the other games do. And that's why you either love it or hate it
EDIT: same with your thoughts behind gen 3 as a part of a 5th gen remake, or being able to explore Sinnoh postgame in BW. What that does is integrate nostalgia into the BW games by connecting it to an older generation. But that takes away from Gen 5's charm as being risky and new
Bro imagine surfing through the ocean with thunderous lighting crashing down when kyogre returns to hoenn.
Gen 5 is definitely what kept me playing pokemon. Although I dont play pokemon anymore, these will definitely remain the best to me.
My first games were Gen 5 and so I loved the new Pokemon and when playing new games, will almost refuse to use old generation Pokemon in a new game. Even though regional variants are cool, I look for those new Pokemon to be a staple of the region and make it feel like it has its own identity and can stand on its own, as opposed to being a callback to prior generations. How many more times do we need to see Charizard be the star? It was Leon’s ace and it’s not even from that generation. I wonder if I’d have that same outlook had I started playing the games a generation earlier
Like i wish man had an urshifu. It makes more sense
I don't care what anyone says. Gen V is still my favorite regardless.
Same same..
I love Chandelure and Eelektross for some reason- and it was my first DS pokemon game..

Ironic, most pkmn fans hated game freak for making gen 4 the same way as the first 3 saying pkmn died after gen 2 & they'd only come back if they actually Changed the games.....well they did and guess what? Gen 5 was hated for it. Then people hated gen 7 bc to much story, so we got Gen 8. The way pkmn Games are now is bc of the fans. They fucked up 😂
@@pkmnproductions7461 also because game freak's gotta pump out a game every year or else daddy nintendo will cross them into the shadow realm
@@pkmnproductions7461 Gen 5 is at least creative, in fact they went nuts after gen 5, they created megas (and gone 3D) then with sun and moon they added UCS, regional Variants and then with galar they taken it to gmax (which isn't the best but it is a cool Gimmick for the Galar region)
Ah yea Z crystals happened too
@@pkmnproductions7461
It's both because of ungrateful fans and greedy GaneFreak
One of the things that make Gen 5 the best gen is how challenging yet how good and how in depth the story is, gen 5 felt like the last game where game freak actually put in hard work to make the best game they possibly could, we've never really got another game that felt challenging at all, or had a story that you would actually be invested in too. Another thing is that Gen 5 was the last pokemon game where very little was given to you
The poor sales really did change em, eh?
Gen 5 was the start of the difficulty going away though lmao. How many base 120+ Atk/Sp.Atk pokemon could you easily get? Theres at least 7 of them and they can OHK up until N's battle or Ghetsis (which were good fights).
*cough* *cough* legends of arceus exist.
thank God i have waited for this moment.
Bro gen 5 wasn’t that hard at all.
Move along, just a Narutard moving off the bandwagon into Pokémon. N is an ignorant tool, can talk to Pokémon but can't understand they're happy with trainers and furthermore gets used by ghetsis. Ghetsis is a boring villain. You don't feel anything for him, you don't even care about beating him.
Crazy how Gen 5 has the best story, best evil team, and best region
Say it louder for the people in the back
And, in my opinion, it had a couple of mature themes/moments too!
I like the pokemons too, i know that most people hate gen 5 pokemons but look at haxorus, hydreigon, druddigon, embour, coke bear, gigalith, galvantula. There's a lot of good pokemon

He is talking about what people thought in the past, and only now most people are actually acknowledging the gen5 games. In the past, they didn't even sold as much as other games
They aren't fresh, new, or exciting. They offered nothing unique over other Pokemon games in terms of raw gameplay.
@@rpgfanatic9719 Gen 5 was the first of story focus, actual development and memorable characters (N, Ghetsis, Gym leaders), had decent mons (hate Garboder all you want but Haxorus & Bisharp are on the good half of Unova), Changing of seasons, PWT, Actual dungeons and puzzles to explore (Abysll ruins, Ancient Relic, Caves,) and so much more.

Gen 5 and sequel is the best last pokemon game for the DS. Thy hate it got was unfair, literally over a trash bag and ice cream cone. I really hope they get remakes and more about the pass of the original dragon.
Of course, because the pile of sludge and the upside down poke ball is obviously much better. Also we don’t need remakes, it really isn’t needed. Not only is gen 5 not that dated, but game freak will probably ruin it. If the developers of bdsp can prove that they can make a game, maybe, but still I’d rather have gen 5 be untouched than have the fear of it being ruined.

First game or not, they are still bad designs. I don’t love the trash bag and ice cream, but at least they are more creative designs, if they are good is up to interpretation.
I’m just gonna say this much, the reason I found so much love for gen 5 as a Pokémon game was because it felt like a whole new side to Pokémon to be explored. I wasn’t seeing the same old Pokémon show up in every route. Getting to meet every new Pokémon felt like such an exciting thing. To hold onto the past Pokémon would seem more like a nostalgia play. I actually felt more connected because the first time I ever played a Pokémon I had the same feeling because everyone Pokémon felt new and exciting to meet for the first time. That’s why I enjoyed black and white myself at least
I'm a gen 5 kid so I'm pretty biased but for me this is the best game in the series. The sprites, the music, the unique pokemon. It's all great in my opinion
This gen is the worst gen in terms of creativity. So many pokemon are just previous pokemon but worse.
