It's because in Iowa, the weather has been up and down a lot and so he probably doesn't want to miss out on fishing if it's possible, if we had crappy weather he probably would be doing the more complicated baits

back in the 80s Bill Norman made a soft plastic lure called a Snatrix , it was a snake shaped thing with a long flat tail . i would fish it Texas rigged on a 2/0 hook and no weight it would slide across the surface of the water , over Lilly pads or whatever looking exactly like a small snake swimming and Large mouth bass would kill it .
sadly it is not made anymore . you should make something like it and try it out where you fish .

As a wood turner a couple of tips for you sir. First clean the ways off with a high grit sand paper say about 1000. Then add some paste wax to them will make it so much better for sliding the tail stock back and fourth. 2nd please use a face shield. If you get a catch and the wood flies off there its going to do some damage (I know from experience). And lastly if you take your drive spur out and use a mallet to drive it into the wood you will be sure its attached well. Nice looking bait as always sir.

The outro was pretty funny. I have a suggestion for the molds. Rubber bands can actually lead to more flashing because they apply most of their pressure at the corners of the mold which causes the sides to actually bow outward from the middle. So even if it isn't enough to see it at the sides, internally the center is being pulled apart from the pressure being placed on the corners. If you use 2 flat boards, one on each of the sides without a seam and then gently clamp the boards with a c clamp or 2 it will apply flat even pressure against the 2 halves of the mold pushing them together so that the seam inside where the flashing happens will be sealed completely flat. Just a suggestion.

That montage at the end is classic. I live in the South, so I don't get to do a lot of ice fishing, but that chubby grub would be amazing in swift creeks close to eddies, or casting in to spillways. That little tail on the back would whip like crazy in the current. If you were injecting from the tail, I would say make about a quarter of the tail a highlight color, like a chartreuse. It's always fun watching your process, and I look forward to one day owning some kind of Marling bait in my collection. Not that I would be able to bring myself to fish with it, mind you. That's like using the Mona Lisa as a fish gutting board.
