Hi Jim, like you, I often show folks the long way to install apps on their Mac, so they know where things are going. I did want to share, that you could also drag and drop the app right on the Applications "Alias" sitting right next to the Skype app in the installer folder. Not sure if that's helpful or not, but it does save a step or two in the process. Thanks for your videos!
Admittedly, that's correct, but I like to show people the full process so they can learn to do it themselves first and then the shortcuts can kick in.

Thanks. It should be although Skype has changed some since this tutorial was made. You can still make computer to computer calls for free, but calls to a cell phone will require a credit card payment set up during installation.

I think that's fair, yes. Zoom is mainly used by business so in most every case, it's a business that sends the invite, in your Dr's case, for example.

I haven’t done a specific tutorial on using Skype on a PC because I’ve used an Apple computer since about 1990 and I don’t use a PC. However, I can give you the steps to sync your Skype from your mobile phone with your PC.
Skype, the Universal Windows app for Windows 10, can replace your default SMS app on Mobile, and you can sync your SMS messages with the Windows 10 PC.
To sync SMS across Windows 10 platforms you need to set Skype UWP as a default SMS app and then enable the syncing from the settings. Here are the steps:
On the Phone, Open Skype and go to ‘Settings’. Scroll down to the SMS menu, tap to ‘Set Skype as the default SMS app’. Do not close the Settings window.
On the PC, Open Skype UWP and go to ‘Settings’. Scroll down to the SMS section and tap ‘Enable’. Write down the ‘Authentication Code’.
On the Phone, you will see a request for connection from the PC. Tap to Enter the Authentication code. Enter the 4 digit code shown on Desktop.
That’s it, your devices are now connected with Skype, and the app will sync the SMS messages across them.

Great video Jim. I already have Skype I do know the basics and I probably should know the answer to this text question but in order to video I’m quite sure both people need to have Skype on their computer correct I know that when you call somebody’s phone that’s a different situation unless you’re calling Skype to Skype but video you both people do need to have Skype downloaded I’m quite sure is that correct?
I asked this question because my brothers going to be conferencing video conferencing with his doctor in about two weeks using zoom (that’s what the doctors office uses) we were given a link by his office that when we click on it it opens up a video and they we will be able to see the doctor when it takes place it looks like we don’t have to have zoom software on our computer but with Skype I believe both people have to have it downloaded can you explain the difference in the technology so that I can understand?
You are correct, sir. In order to use Skype computer to computer, it needs to be downloaded on both computers. It's free to do that. However, Skype has recently changed a bit and charges if you want to make a computer to cell phone call. That's fairly new and happened after I made this about a year ago. Regarding Zoom. It is free to use and does NOT need to be installed on your computer. It's all done virtually in the cloud. You'll receive a link from the party setting up the conference. Click it the link at the appointed time you'll be automatically connected to them through Zooms cloud service. The link will only work during the appointed time (a few minuted before) and during the call and will no longer work once disconnected. it's a one time use per link situation so you can't call the Dr back on that link to conference again until another virtual meeting is arranged on their end.

I am trying to instal on galaxy tab A7 from playstore. It seems to be different setup than yours?
It is a bit different on PC than on Mac.
hi mr. Costa - where do get the mike and camera to operate skype?
Skype is an app you can install on any smart phone (any manufacturer) or computer or laptop (Mac or PC). Once installed, it will utilize the built in camera an mic on those devices. It will ask to access those accessories. You should allow access. However, you can also attach an external camera and mic to the audio and USB inputs on your computers, if you want, but you'd need to buy those separately. Installation and access to the accessories is the same for external devices as it is for internal cameras/mic. Let me know if you get it working.

This has been happening recently, I heard. Assuming that the person you’re trying to call is actually online and ready to receive a call with Skype open on their end, there’s most likely a bug. If their computer is off or Skype is closed or something, they won’t know to pick up a call.
Try this to check for bugs:
Reset the Skype for Windows 10 (UWP) app on your computer. To reset Skype for Windows 10 app, please follow the steps below:
1. Open the Start menu and click Settings.
2. Click Apps.
3. Locate and click Skype from the Applications list.
4. Click Advanced option.
5. Select Reset.
Then, uninstall and reinstall Skype from the Windows Store.
Or try classic Skype:

You started out discussing "how would like to see your grandchildren" then went a business application making phone calls! I was looking for how to video chat computer to computer, and though that was what you were going to explain from your opening but that never happened!
It works the same person to person, business to business & computer to computer.

I'm guess you mean a notebook PC computer. If so, it's the same. If you meant something else, let me know. I'll need more info to answer your questions.
HEY JIM, MY DISK-DRIVE WON'T OPEN, IS IT A LOST CAUSE, OR IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN TRY ASIDE FROM JAMMING A KNIFE IN THE SIDE-CRACK AND TRYING TO FORCE IT OPEN? IT'S AN OLDER DELL TOWER PC.
There should be a little hole in it that can force it to unlatch & open. The hole is tiny, on the door somewhere and you can stick something small like an open paper clip in the hole to force the door open without breaking it.

@@tracyteresi9382 Windows 7 is pretty out of date these days as is that computer, I think. It depends on what you're going to do with it. For just general paperwork, email, internet stuff, it's fine. For any other type of more advanced graphics or video work, it's not going to work. Here's the specifications: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02977202. Computer to computer via WiFi is still free on Skype, but they've changed since I created this tutorial and when calling a cellular device, there is now a charge.
do you talk to the monitor do you need to have a microphone ??? I don't get it.
If your monitor has a built in microphone, Skype will ask to access it and it will work fine. If not, you will need an external microphone of some kind. Laptops have a built in mic and work great.
Better than most. The directions on Skype are confusing where it talks about adding another phone number and then it mentions cost. Maybe you could revisit the new skype download, go through the process and explain what the it's talking about. Never does it say that you can use you own phone number for free.
You need to read the description. When the video was created, Skype was free. It's since been changed to free for computer to computer calls only. To call any cell phone, Skype ow requires you to enter a credit card to pay for the call.
TFS❣️. How can this be done on iPad?
Skype will work the same on an iPad, you just need to download it to the device first.

@@delladearest2511 Well, your other solution would be to simply sign up for a free email account from Gmail or Hotmail so you can get Skype then. You can learn how to do that here: ua-cam.com/video/i1Aes82bBzk/v-deo.html. Also, just so you know, Skype has changed a bit since I made this video and it's still free for computer to computer calls, but there is a fee now if you call a smartphone. It didn't used to be that way. They'll ask for a credit card from you when you sign up to charge for those. You have a few other options to consider that are still free. FaceTime would work free so long as you're on WiFi. Learn about that here: ua-cam.com/video/3qBBppDFiLA/v-deo.html. You could also use Zoom for free also. Any way to use a Sony Handy Cam on Skype?
I can't speak to that specific camera (since you don't mention the model #), but you can use an external camera provided you can connect it to your computer so, let's say you have your camera and you connect it's A/V output to one of the inputs on your computer (USB or some other). You'll need the proper connector cable to do this to convert the output of the camera to the input of the computer, then Skype can detect it when you change the settings to the external device.

The model number of the Sony Handy cam Camcorder is DCR SX454/L.
This Camcorder came with a USB cable and I've already tried it with
SKYPE without any luck. I Don't think it will work with Skype. Thanks

@@luigi5890 I believe this is the manual for your camera: www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/4264/42647411M.pdf. You can download it if needed. With the additional info you provided, keep this in mind & see if it works: This camcorder cannot be use as a Webcam because it does not have the following features : 1) USB streaming for USB cable 2) DV OUT for a firewire cable.
However; although the camcorder does not have these features, you can still use the A/V cable to send live video signal to your computer. Here is how it works :
1) You'll need an A/V to USB Adapter which you an get at Bestbuy or similar. This adapter will come with a software. So, Install the software supplied with the A/V to USB Adapter. Connect the A/V cable to your camera. Connect the other end of the A/ V cable to the video input on the Video/USB adaptor. Connect the USB plug of the Video/USB adaptor to a USB port on the computer.
2)Power on the camcorder. Launch the software program you installed for the Video/USB converter. Watch for video from the camcorder. If you don't see it, check your connections.
3)Launch the Skype program. On the Skype toolbar at the top, click on "Tools." Click on "Options," then click on "Video Settings" on lefthand sidebar. Be sure the "Enable Skype Video" box is checked. Open "Select Webcam" menu box. Choose "Default video device" if using the Firewire connection. Choose "USB device" if using the Video/USB adaptor. You should see video from the camera in the video window on the right side of the "Video Settings" box
Note : You will need to disable to Auto Shut Off feature on the camcorder to avoid the camcorder turning off byitself after 5 minutes. Also Disable the DEMO mode to avoid Activating when there is recording going on. Checked Operation manual of camcorder to disable these features.
Jim, thanks for your helpful video. My Skype account was preloaded on my PC laptop with Win10...at least I don't remember setting up an account. There is a default Skype name and my main email. Can I change both in Settings? I would prefer that others on Skype don't have this email unless I give it to them. Do users generally change their name so it resembles their own name or leave default? Also, the only video icon I see under my name is labeled "Meet Now". Is that how I start a video call? There’s few questions here so let me tackle them one at a time.
There is a default Skype name and my main email. Can I change both in Settings?
From Chats, Select your profile picture.
Select your presence status or your mood message to quickly make changes.
Select Skype profile to update additional information. From here you can:
• Select your profile picture to make changes. Learn more about how to change your profile picture.
• Select your name or choose the Edit button to change your display name.
• To edit other details, select the information you want to change, and then choose Edit.
Note: Your Skype Name cannot be edited.
To change your email:
To set a profile email address as your primary email address:
Sign in to your account.
Select your profile picture, or select Edit Profile in the Account details section at the bottom of the page. Note: If you're on iPhone or iPad and missing any options, you may need to clear the history and cookies on your device and sign in again.
Scroll down to the Contact details section and select the Edit profile button on the right.
Select Set as primary email next to the address you want to set as your primary email, and select the green Save button at the bottom of the page.
Enter your password to confirm the change of your primary email address
Do users generally change their name so it resembles their own name or leave default?
This is up to you. Mine is my business name, but you can make it water you want.
The only video icon I see under my name is labeled "Meet Now". Is that how I start a video call?
Meet Now in Skype allows you to easily set up a collaboration space and invite both Skype contacts and friends or family who are not on Skype. Participants can then easily join meetings whether they have an account or not
How do I create a meeting in Skype?
Starting your meeting is as easy as signing in to Skype and selecting the Meet Now  button. You'll get a call link and a Share invite button to easily to invite others. Once you're ready, set your call to audio or video and select the Start call button. You can also create a meeting directly from the web.
How do I join a call with my Meet Now invitation?
Our unique Meet Now link will open your installed Skype app on any device. Even if you're not signed in, you can join the call or chat as a guest. If you don't have Skype installed on your desktop, we will open our Skype for Web client for your convenience. If you'd like, you can install Skype on your device as well.
What can I do during a meeting?
During a meeting you can:
A - Open recent chats.
B - View participants currently in the call.
C - Share the Meet Now link.
D - Start recording the call.
E - Mute or unmute the microphone.
F - Turn video on or off.
G - End the call.
H - Open the conversation.
I - Share the screen.
J - Send a reaction to the call.
K - View More options.
Can I still access the Meet Now chat after the meeting?
The Meet Now link is accessible anytime you need it. We will hold your call recordings for up to 30 days and media shared in the chat even longer. Meet Now in Skype is perfect for your conference calls, webinars or work interviews.
What's the difference between Meet Now and Group Chats?
• Meet Now chats can be quickly set up and shared with others in two easy steps. However, all new Meet Now chats will initially have the same title and profile picture. Tap or click on the Chat Header in your meeting and select the Edit button to rename it and add a profile picture.
• Group Chats are customized from the start since a group name is required and has you select participants first before creating it.

Yes, it does work like email. The other person will still see the message in the chat thread, but if you delete it at your end, they can't respond to it any longer from their end.

You failed to explain something important. You said you can contact someone by email. Does that mean you can video chat, making the connection by email alone? Or is skype strictly a software that works exclusively by phone for video chatting?
No, you need to make the connection through the app now. there have been some changes to the program since I put this video out a couple years ago. An updated video is in the works.
I'm wondering why MS wants to charge my credit card for a phone number to make Skype calls.

@@georgemickel6608 I found an answer for you: If you only use Skype one-on - one then its free, Skype Out (calls to phones) needs a credit card number so that you can deposit money in your Skype account to pay for the Phone calls.

Pretty Good Video. BUT....what about those of us who have external cameras. And external Mikes? You know.....us Stone Age Folks. Also..... how about a "Panic Button" when you press a wrong key or button and your computer world goes off somewhere near Siberia and they're selling Yak Hooves! How to get back on track. Thanks !!!

Yes, provided you both are on Wifi & both use Skype. Skype allows computer to computer, mobile to computer and mobil to mobil calls.

if its free why is it asking for money???????????????
If you only use Skype one-on-one (say computer to computer) then its free, Skype Out (calls to phones) needs a credit card number so that you can deposit money to pay for the Phone calls. This a a relatively new change to the program.
