How To Repair A Loose Bottle Cage Mount
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2014
- I show how fix a bottle cage boss mount that just spins when trying to tighten or loosen the screw. I also show how to remove a screw from the mount when the mount spins in the frame. The issue is a riv-nut that has loosened. I show how to tighten it up with a cheap, easy to get screw, washer and nut.

I lived with a rattling bottle cage FOR YEARS, then I just fixed it in less than 5 minutes for zero cost. You are today's hero.
RJ: You are so awesome! Every time I need to learn how to do something on my bikes, you seem to have the exact video I need. Thanks!
Thank you! It worked! I used your technique on one of my rear rack mounts. I had no idea how those mounts worked. I thought there was a nut behind them and if I removed the screw on the mount that just spun, the nut would drop down inside the seat stay. Who knew it was a rivet nut -- well, you knew. Thanks so much for taking the time to make and share the video and your expertise. Now I've got a rack that's sturdy on both sides. Thanks again!
I was about to take my old bike to the shop, but watched your video, followed your recommendations, and had the problem solved in five minutes. Thank you!!!
RJ to the rescue again! Thank you!
Honestly rj the bike guy is by far my favourite UA-cam bike mechanic, he always has a video on how to fix the obscure random problem you've encountered. Absolute legend 👍
This worked beautifully on my Storck Fenomalist carbon frame as a repair to the riv-nut on my down tube. Thanks for posting!
Hi RJ just a note to say thanks for posting this video. I watched it when it was first posted. today I found a loose rib nut on my bike. I remember this video and knew exactly what to do thanks to you. Job done in less than 10 minutes. (Otherwise I expect I would be making a complete mess by trying to solve the problem with glue.)
This is a quick effect way to solve this problem, I had two rattling mounts and this saved me having to go without my bike whilst the lbs repaired the rivnuts. Thank you for sharing
I have been trying to figure how to free the screw on mine forever! Thank you so much for this useful tutorial!
Thank you for the very useful tutorial. Loose rivnuts are much more common than many think.
You are like a God to me.
You are the answer to every question my bike has.
Worked like a charm! Thanks for making the video.
I thought id seen all your useful videos - missed this one somehow. great timing as i'm doing up a frame with a loose bottle cage mount- thanks!
Great video. This worked on my band new (Giant Propel Advanced) carbon frame. It saved me a lot of hassle and warranty wrangling with a retailer who basically didn't want to know!
Wow, I've been looking for this for a week. Many thanks
Thank you RJ! A quick youtube search for "bottle boss thread" and your video told me exactly what I needed to know - looking forward to giving this technique a 'spin' later this week ; )
Great video thanks. Had a pump mount stuck on and couldn't remove it to allow for vice grips. Used a cable cutter to cut through the pump mount eye lit plastic which allowed it to be removed and reused after fixing the issue as you described.
This worked perfectly! Thanks for the video.
Wow! fantastic! thanks it worked, I just bought a new cage and then the bolts were spinning, thought I was doomed until i saw you video. Now it's on and looks great.
Totally ready to try this, thanks!
This works! Thank you so much for this!
I had this issue for 5 yrs. Didn’t really bother me but person I rode been bothered with it. Until I found this channel! I just fixed just now! ( 7/4/2023). It took me awhile to get all the Things I need for this fix and did slowly doing the process to make sure I get the right tension.. and I would like to thank you for sharing this fix! 5 stars..
YOU"RE THE MAN RJ! It worked perfectly and only took a minute. Thank you, you have saved me multiple times now!
Thank you VERY MUCH RJ for that video, it's very appreciate. God Bless you
Brilliant mate, just what I needed to watch 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for posting this !!
Thanks for sharing info, I appreciate it.👍
Great tip, thanks!
Just the video I needed.
Thank you.
Thanks for posting. Just bought a demo Kona Private Jake that was perfect in every way except for a loose bottle cage boss. This great tip fixed that one small issue perfectly!
+Mondo Jacobs Cool!
It worked for me! Amazing. I didn't have a good hex bolt to use, so I used a Phillips-head screw and drove it with a power drill and a low torque setting, working my way up to what seemed like a good tension. Around "10" on my 18V Makita, for what it's worth. Very pleased!
Hi RJ
Just wanted to thank you, I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm, thank you for saving my day :)
Regards from Switzerland
Thanks a lot it just helped me deal with a problem i had for the past year❤
Just had a new specialized delivered with this issue, thank you!
I swear man thank u so much u are the only one with these rare problems kind of videos i freaked out i taught something is wrong with my frame thanks alot appreciate it alot♥️
Actually, there's several of these videos. this is the 3 rd one I've watched in the last few minutes, showing the exact same solution.
Just in case you don't happen to have, or want to buy an 'M5 x .80' bolt, you can use a quick release hub skewer for this repair. It is the same size and thread count. I use a modified seat post skewer for this trick. With the addition of a few spacers the 'quick release' action acts as the wrench (tensioner).
awesome thanks
I owe you a beer, sir! Worked like a charm!
But make sure you don't reuse that skewer anymore for your wheel & for riding. Do make that skewer as a bicycle tool moving forward for your safety.
Top tip (even 8 years later!)
Thanks
Great trick!! Thanks!
This worked on my MTB, all four were loose. Thank you!
Yes! I needed this badly. Wish me luck
Thank you very much, it works great!

This fix worked like a charm on my alu Diverge frame!
Thank you, I was able to install new rivet nuts using this method :)

Nice and short no bs. Good
I was a bike mechanic for 15 years and managed to not learn this during that time. Now I have. Thank you
Thank you sir☺️
Nice video. Wish I had found it sooner
worked, thanks. had an annoying tingling sound on my bike, found out one of these was loose and causing the noise
Thankyou so much mate you help me alot now I just save a 12 bucks for repair that I can do by my self thank you so much this video is so helpful 🙏
That is great info. You helped me with an easy repair. I should have watched your vid before I spent 2 hours trying to fix it myself.....=)

Thank you for this video it worked on my Carbon bike!

thanks for this :)
Awesome! Gonna give this a go this weekend! Thanks man!
Didnt work out. There isn't enough of the rib nut exposed to get a grip on my Remedy.
Pedaling Dave having the same problem. What’d you end up doing?
Just bought a bike for my gf and two of the bottle cage mounts appear to have this problem. I can't wait to get home and try this, Thanks!
Sorted thank you
i will recommend this to my mechanic friend 💯
Ok RJ i have landed on your site yet again, and i have this problem, so i can't wait to try fixing this :-)
Just found a bolt from my old mtb somehow, it looks exactly the same as yours, and i also have a slightly bigger nut and a washer, so i am good to go. Have to remove the cage, i have 3 bosses, so when this one started wiggling i just moved the cage down.
Thank you so much! This was driving me insane on my bike...
thanks
I should have known that RJ had the solution !
Nice
good
Bought a brand new bike for $234.00 at Walmart and one them were loose. Called the bike shop and he wouldn't give me a price and suggested I drop it off for him to look at it like it was a Harley or something.
Well, thanks to this video I was able to dodge the Jive. Thanks RJ The Bike Guy!
With a Walmart bicycle, it always pays to listen to RJ because most services at a bike shop will cost more than you spent on the bike. This is especially true for children's bikes that are in the under $100 range
I like video
i just had the same problem. And will try this as soon as possible..if its works i will come back and change my comment.. Thank you from now.
RJ! The threads inside my rivnet are completely shot! Any advice how to get the whole thing out? Love the vids!
Thank you! Anyone know how this even happens? Brand new Trek was assembled by LBS and came like this :/ I think I'm just going to take it back and have them deal with it. Appreciate the video!!
impact wrench and hold it at a slight angle... works for me
THANKSSSSSSSSSSSSS
For 3 yrs i didnt know this was fixable ty youtube recommended gosh
What else could I use instead of a vice grip, because I have the same problem on my fixie and I don't have a vice grip.
Just had an issue with sized m5 screws in my frame, and thought there's a trick to this. Hey presto...I found it.
Just going to put some wd40 on all the screws first, as they've been in there a long time. Think I took them all out and greased them up, just incase I needed to fit accessories.
This happened to me on a cannondale caad9 frame, the Thing is that between one of the screws and the frame I still have the bottle cage. The cage is metal and I can't take it off cleanly. Do you have any ideas on how to fix that? Much appreciated!
Hi there ask MTB seat tube 27.2mm for extra water bottle in hardtrail?
Well I'll be damned, it worked! I didn't have a longer screw, but found the front skewer had the same threading and used it to tighten it down.
great tip, however I couldn't do it due to a massive washer in the way which is not allowing me to catch the mount under it...
What's up RJ. I have the same problem on my aluminum bike. I want to spray paint or powder coat it and replace the bottle cages with carbon ones. But My problem is the following. The bottle cages are stocked on the frame. And the mounts on the frame are loose. How can I solve this problem? I took everything from the frame. But this is getting in the way. How can you help me, what do you recommend me ?
I could've used that info back in 2005 by that i mean the lbs that sold me a brand new mountain bike with this exact same problem...their fix didn't hold for long, whatever they did.
Hi Rj. Great video. What would you suggest if the cage mount is loose AND the screw is rusted in there? Even if I hold the mount, the screw does not turn. Thanks!
Lots of of a good penetrating oil like Kano Kroil.
shyflirt1 What thoughts did you have on the marine grease, the black EP grease, and the Super Lube?
Not sure what you are asking. I use different greases in different places. Marine is a good all purpose grease. Super Lube is good if there are plastic or rubber parts. Black EP grease? I used to use regular automotive grease before switching to marine grease. Is that what you mean?
good video... doesnt help me get the nut off in the first place if the bottle cage is still on. help!
I have the same problem with a aluminum frame I want to build for my backup rainy days bike. I got it from a friend. But in my case the bottle cages are still on the bike. I want to replace them, but can't get them out. And it difficult to reach the back side of the bottle cages to do that.
It's a pity that UA-cam don't allow me to put a pic so you can see the situation.
What can I do? I have some parts coming in to rebuild this bike. AMD I don't want this to be my obstacle.
Thanks in advance
I couldn’t get my grips on the riv so I had to do some insane shit to get the screw out, worked thou and only scratched the frame a little
how did you get the rib nut off mines too short to get a grip with the vice grips
🎉❤
Any suggestions on how to fit water bottle screw mounts on a AL frame that doesn't have them?
And, do you think it's safe for the frame?
+Bane Tudajfor You do it at your own risk.
