Yew Barton, love the show , appreciate you keeping it real. Back in the early 90's mate... definitely some of the wilder days of life, you n I used to bounce up quite a bit on the North Shore, and at "certain" gentlemen's clubs in Honolulu !

So you had the inside knowledge about Filipe taking a year off, I have now heard twice of another high profile surfer leaving the tour!!! Anyone else heard this?
What a great point to bring up about the effect on the North Shore locals with the timing of the contests. Just another one to add to the list of recent poor decisions by the WSL
great episode, Just a thought I reckon you blokes could do a separate podcast on culture and conspiracy theories or truth theories as they are now. Keep up the great work.
BL, you guys are amazing and so wise and wonderful for us (old) guys that just love surfing ! I will try to keep this brief even though I could write a few pages here on the topics y'all addressed... First off - YES the WSL totally whiffed on the majority of the waiting period for the Pipe Pro. This has happened more and more often in the last 3 years at many contest stops and that 1 factor is on the verge of ruining the CT. But, they were saved on the last day as y'all said - the heat with Betty Lou and Pickles might be the very best ladies heat in the history of competitive surfing. Caity Simmers is just a breath of fresh air as well..."I just wanna go get barreled again". Just amazing on the part of all three ladies - HUGE props to them ! (If you remember I commented last episode that I thought Molly would be a front runner ;-). I am sad that Riss and Moana went down on that crappy day that should never have run. But I do hope that Carissa, as well as Felipe, DO concentrate on what they need to do to focus on the Olympics. A world championship is one thing but an Olympic Gold is in a different realm. BL you have my vote to be CEO of the next WCT because the WSL is about to fuck the whole thing up if they're not careful... Peace, be well and take care !
@@barton_lynch LOL love it BL ! I think there will be some revolutionary surfing from the young ladies this year - and that makes me really happy. I just hope the WSL can get it right with the forecasts and calls to go on contests with good waves this year. Their track record the last few years has been suspect to say the least.
Love that you combine the stoke for surfing with critical feedback, thank you guys! …The WSL would be so much more interesting if they would take your approach…
That beard is looking better every day BL! Great discussion guys!! You should still be commentating for WSL as you were the best they had since Potts disappeared!!!

Haha yhe in protest I dont do the fantasy surfer picks and on the verge of deleting the wsl app but Can someone post a link or timestamp of the WSL if they mentioned lahaina fires in the pipe comp or sunset? I was waiting to repost something to create help and awareness but didnt quite find the commentry or links to help...?...
Great Points ! Someone in the high ups of the WSL needs to watch this. Shit WSL should hire Barton to run the tour. Was sad to see Carissa surf her last heat in professional surfing in those horrible conditions when they had a big heavy day they could of ran on........ Bring back trials and the Triple Crown and tour finished by Christmas makes sense what Barton said about the WSL being in town for the whole season and being eyesores at 2 spots at the same time like the 2 set ups at same time Barton said.
Awesome pod as always! I agree the last day was fun to watch, but it still wasn't enough to save the contest from the dark cloud of the failure to run during big Monday. Days like that are why I watch surfing and I think I am not alone. On big, scary, gnarly days that even the pros are afraid of, the sport turns into a gladiator event at the coliseum, and it truly is the best show on earth- even better than the super bowl-which, by the way, I couldn't agree more on the taylor swift/kelce stuff, vomit inducing. Hilarious to see an ozzie loving up american football though, good on ya-I had an oz buddy try and get me into ozzie rules football, man it was tough for me to follow, but I enjoyed the beers.....Anyway, tangent aside, it makes me think that this is a sign of what is to come-the wsl is pushing a sanitized version of the sport, they want it to be gymnastics, more relatable for the average guy, and they also don't want to put their money where their mouth is with the equality push because eventually, if you run it on a big monday type day and the men and women are really "equal by nature" you gotta throw them in there too and somebody might get truly messed up. But the way things are going, it feels like if teahupoo or cloudbreak gets a HUGE swell, it will be on hold too, which is horrible for the sport. I personally think more people would tune in to watch the gladiator spectacle, and it would be good for business......One last note. I truly do appreciate the push the women have made, they deserve their respect and kudos. But if, as some believe, they will eventually match the level of the men, then wouldn't that logically imply putting them in the same division? If they are "equal by nature" then why even have divisions (once the ladies catch up)? I might already be a relic in the way I think at the ripe age of 32, but I personally do believe in archetypes, and that men are bigger, faster, stronger, and hence more capable in sport (capable of course is a subjective judgement, what defines capability, charging? grace? also more capable in one area doesn't mean better as an overall human!). Does that automatically make me a bigot these days? It does seem society is pushing for one archetype, one gender, negating the differences that make each gender so great. The yin and the yang, the difference, is where the beauty lies. Of course there will be exceptions, and they should be encouraged (a woman who charges as hard as the men, a man who is graceful (toledo???)....but I think this push to make the women equal to the men, is weird. If they truly were equal by nature then we wouldn't even be at this point; the women would have been the uncles out in 80s hawaii giving slaps and sending people to the beach in that case- the fact that they have to catch up shows there is difference to begin with. Anyway, sorry for the novel.......Keep doing the great work you do!
"Flexibility" can be found by have one longer contest window for both Hawaiian comps where either comp can be run on any day. For example, on that controversial day that was deemed too big for Pipe, they could have ran the other comp at Sunset. This is a possible future of pro surfing. For example, a 2 month contest window for Australia where a comp can be held any day at multiple locations in Australia & Fiji. For example, two amazing days of swell in WA, then fly to catch the same swell at Bells, then fly to catch the same swell at Raglan or Cloudbreak. If it was done with Surfabout 1979 it can be done today. 1979 also showed a mere one competition need not be restricted to one surfing location.
Thanks for sharing that idea and definitely has merit, although the setups these days are massive and make moving on a daily basis very hard logistically.
At Cloudbreak they run the event from a big boat and then have the communications set up on the island so it is still a big and expensive setup@@BarbarraBay
Yeah I didnt know anything about that, so is that on youtube or the webcast? they had a chat where people could leave comments but they dont now? I have never seen the chat function but interested to hear what happened.
@@barton_lynch the chat function has been running for years on YT for WSL, and has created a great community, some super long term users, some newbies and some wildly opinionated people taking cheap shots. It's a community after all. But it's been there for years. All be it a little unregulated or moderated at times. Especially wild was the day of the Kelly's pool comp and the uproar between Brazilian's and the judging fiasco. During this years Pipe comp, WSL chose to fully moderate the chat, with long term chat participants getting banned from the chat for bad mouthing the WSL, things as small as "WSL sucks" and "make WSL, ASP again" were instantly banned. They then moved to a time system, where you couldn't comment for one minute since your last comment, making it near impossible to have more than a paragraph to get a point across. Understanding that WSL has been under a hell of a lot of backlash for a while now, specially since and before Elo left, and the choice of venues and time of year they choose to run, and the judging. They seem to be open to change, as now at least the judging has a flag associated to individual judges so we can try and understand if there is judge bias etc, and that's a good thing. But the chat is a melting pot of community, that's what a community is. All sorts of people, with all sorts of opinions. Some of us have made friends on there globally, hooked up for surf sessions, gone and had beers, had people sleep on couches, made travel plans, found new spots. I had spinal surgery last year and was off work for a hell of a long time, and the chat kept me sane for a while there, i could interact with like minded folk, watch surfing, and have a laugh. Well it’s hard to argue that they are the 2 best ever anymore . It’s pretty obvious that Caitlin and Molly are riding pipe just as good as anyone on the woman’s side ever has .
Where to begin, the potential on the new generation, the poop fest by wsl, or how lucky are we really, contemporaries of the likes of the greatest , the bull , the cat , rabbit, Thompsons, the Lopez , the fletchers, the kongs, the Smiths, THE LYNCH'S, such a endless list of talents we witnessed, I nevertheless still paddling with a big smile, with a stoke . There's changes at the horizon and competitive surfing will fall , to raise once again hopefully, till then let's hold on tite mate, always a pleasure to get a new "Stoke Blocke". Pura Vida Master thank you.
Lacanau Pro ‘94. Waves were still really good after the comp. It was late, hard to see too far. I saw a goofy way too far in. I thought: not making it. I dropped in, he made it. I had to step on the gas. Who the f is this guy? It was BL. That teaches you not to drop on a world champ. He was pretty mellow about it.
Girls need the opportunity to grow up not having to play the gorilla game with men in the water, and it's extremely difficult fighting bigger, stronger, men to get those waves, even when the men are less capable they still have the animal drive to dominate women. These couple of women really dominated and made a difference. Caity, Molly, Moana charge.
There is so many locals at heaps of the spots, what a weird point to make? Doesn’t take much thinking to account for most of of the spots. I also don’t buy the myth that the judges don’t want wildcards to win. Why would they hand them out then? They literally do it to make it more interesting, not the opposite. Case in point Barron Mamiya who qualified via the wildcard spot and is now winning Pipe Masters. It creates great storyline’s when a wild card upsets the status quo and the WSL make a big deal of it. The WSL are barely capable of making the right decision where necessary, but I feel like those critiques are obsolete
I thought it was excellent as well , just want to ask what you guys thought of Rip curl dumping Bethany Hamilton for a man/ woman Sasha Jane Lowerson I think its utterly disgusting
We love Bethany and she actually left ripcurl before she wasnt dumped she saw the writing on the wall and wanted to get out of there and we support her and the integrity of woman's sport so I dont like it either.
Seth is hardcore, Robbo got skunked by conditions that let someone average sneak through, even JJF got done because the the heavy situations didn’t come into play. Caity was great but slipped past the best girl on the day.
Wsl dropped chat on youtube...I've been a regular on there the last two years and regardless of the few wild peoples on there, it was a great way to be a part of the community. Disappointed with wsl.
The last generation of women simply didn’t work on their weaknesses. Moana showed it. Professional when comfortable unfortunately like the Men’s World Champ x2*
Fair call there wasnt the desire to push into the bigger waves from that generation, Layne Beachley did more charging than the newer generation but this next one is ready to GO!
Such a poor decision not to finish the women's elimination round after their opening round. Sad for Carissa and Moana but stand up Molly, Betty Lou and Caitlin
WSL has a big problem on their hands. I'm not even sure they're aware of how quickly this could snowball on them. The problem is that their current format is just not inspiring anyone. Not the fans but more importantly not the competitors themselves. Two of their world champion ladies are apparently not inspired enough to spend a long arduous season battling for wins and points that won't actually matter once they reach a short day at Trestles so they opted out. It's simply a risk vs rewards mismatch and apparently they're just not that interested in doing it anymore. And who could blame them? Especially in Carissa's case? Then on the men's side the reigning 2X world champion, who might believe all of that effort and risk would indeed be worth it in his particular case, is also still opting out because his world titles seem to earn him nothing but scorn and ridicule instead of the accolades and adulation deserving of a world champion. So who can blame him if he's just not feeling it either? I know I don't. So I don't think we've seen the end of the exodus. I hope I'm wrong and WSL figures out a way to hold it all together while maintaining its competitive integrity but I'm not gonna hold my breath. They're gonna have to resort to some ISA like rules preventing departures somehow if this keeps up. And speaking of the ISA's all I know is that even being an American myself, Team Canada is gonna have one extra fan this time so go Team Canada and especially go Erin!
World champs always peeled out. Curren, Potts, Carroll all left early. Slater, Irons, Medina. Gerlach left in no.2 spot. Occy burnt out mid carreer. Carrisa has won a million events and wants kids. There's no crisis.
@@xwhite2020 You're naming people and cases where they left and took breaks all at different times. This isn't the same as that. Three of WSL's top surfers just left in less than a month. Are you denying that's not the same thing? Also Carissa has many reasons I'm sure, as would anyone, but she said herself that she's just not finding the motivation so be sure to count that reason as well. Because it counts. A lot. Anyway, as I mentioned, I don't think the exodus is over yet. More CT surfers who are qualified for the Olympics may find it difficult to not go focus on Teahupo'o once/if it's clear they're not making the cut or the final five. Unless WSL implements some ISA style rules penalizing them for doing so that is.
Interesting discussion as always. The WSL appears to treat Hawaii like a cash cow, milking Hawaii's rich surf culture, fabled waves and its rightful place as a proving ground for being considered a complete surfer. The support staff for all elements of the WSL, from the surfers, judges, IT, broadcasting etc. would be considerable, and as you add, all of the media, surf reps, coaches etc in and around the water. Perhaps the WSL should consider themselves as surf travellers when they hold contests around the world; be respectful of the locals, give more than you take, and leave the spot cleaner than when you get there. And, try and avoid the most crowded part of the season (change the Pipeline event back to its previous date) Cheers
@@lamar_actual You could just as easily build an editoral on why Pros are now having extended careers. Steph departing for a year at 36 years old after 18 seasons. Carissa champ at 18 years old, 13 seasons, millions in prize money. All World champs now given wildcards back in but that doesn't fit the adgenda here does it. Its all doom gloom and conspiricies with the cool kids.
@@xwhite2020 Are we discussing what is happening with three top surfers pulling the plug in less than a month or redirecting onto another topic? How many seasons will Steph have this kind of opportunity to add one more championship without Carissa in the picture before she's another year older? To be honest I'm doubtful Steph will be coming back next year in the first place. And if she does she'll be facing the likes of Molly, Betty, Caroline, a sophomore Sawyer and possibly Sierra and Erin to boot! It's not going to ever be any easier for her going forward than it would have been this year and she took the year off. Not only did she take it off but so did Carissa and Filipe and...counting. My only "agenda" here is to speak the truth and wish the best for WSL and surfing because I'm a huge fan and want it to be successful. That's it. At least so far as I'm concerned.

Go out of my way to avoid surf travel when pros are around, Feb was consistently a beautiful and mellow time on the north shore. What a shame.
Yeah greedy buggers made a mess of it.
This is my mom's phone Amanda Smithson this message and the previous message is from Mark Smithson ( tini)
Thank you for sharing your stoke with us mate
Carissa has been absolutely skunked by WSL of late
100% skunked
Lacanau Pro ‘94. Waves were still really good after the comp. It was late, hard to see too far. I saw a goofy way too far in. I thought: not making it. I dropped in, he made it. I had to step on the gas. Who the f is this guy? It was BL. That teaches you not to drop on a world champ. He was pretty mellow about it.
Ha great story and thanks for sharing.
either Molly's 5.60 was underscored or Betty Lou's 7.00 was overscored. Molly won the heat despite Betty Lou's great final wave
YEP, thanks for tuning in.
It was really a crime not to run on that big day
100
Girls need the opportunity to grow up not having to play the gorilla game with men in the water, and it's extremely difficult fighting bigger, stronger, men to get those waves, even when the men are less capable they still have the animal drive to dominate women. These couple of women really dominated and made a difference. Caity, Molly, Moana charge.
Those ladies definitely charge and lets add Betty Lou and Bethany Hamilton who also kill it out there.
@@barton_lynch absolutely!
The WSL has never made it clearer that they could care less about how any fans feel.
Thanks for sharing.
R.I.P curl

Toledo was scared, that is all.. Good luck representing Brazil at Chopes!! Can't wait to see that.. NFL is like watching Felipe at Pipe.. Boring as
Different strokes for different blokes.
jack robbos got sunset
Got a great chance.
Seth is hardcore, Robbo got skunked by conditions that let someone average sneak through, even JJF got done because the the heavy situations didn’t come into play. Caity was great but slipped past the best girl on the day.
Great wrap up and thanks for sharing.
nothing has changed except Hawaiians now running comps to hog the waves themselves. WSL now only has two major comps instead of the previous three
I dont see it that way but all good. Vans is not Hawaiian.
Wsl dropped chat on youtube...I've been a regular on there the last two years and regardless of the few wild peoples on there, it was a great way to be a part of the community. Disappointed with wsl.
I wonder why they did that, any ideas?
The last generation of women simply didn’t work on their weaknesses. Moana showed it.
Professional when comfortable unfortunately like the Men’s World Champ x2*
Fair call there wasnt the desire to push into the bigger waves from that generation, Layne Beachley did more charging than the newer generation but this next one is ready to GO!
Chumbinho at itauna... but he never had good results there
Yes exactly funny how that goes.
Such a poor decision not to finish the women's elimination round after their opening round. Sad for Carissa and Moana but stand up Molly, Betty Lou and Caitlin
Well said.
WOW it is Santa Lynch hahaha
Every day is xmas
JOHNJOHNJOHN final heat was terrible , he made poor wave choice and fell off most of his waves. Baron made every wave count.
Thank you laurie
@@xwhite2020
You're naming people and cases where they left and took breaks all at different times.
