No telling how many years of accumulating tools such as Steffen has obtained. His skill level is fantastic to watch. I have such an admiration of Steffen's machining ability and his watchmaking skills are wonderful he has uploaded so many highly instructive videos, I personally will always be highly appreciative of his work. We all should express our deepest thanks to him.

It is such a pleasure to see high grade craftmanship in this skilled watchmaker. Something you do not see in today's pre-fabricated balance staffs CNC controlled machine making. This was a joy to watch.

I'm sure that this man could have been a great surgeon had he chosen to do so. I am not a watch maker but i absolutely love watching these videos. The precision tools! I can't imagine how much money is invested in the tools that are need to perform for such tasks. I also find the ticking of the clocks in the background very relaxing. Thank you!!!

Mr. Pahlow, your craftsmanship fascinates me immensely, but as a filmmaker, the photography was very beautiful to watch. A pun? Oh, well, a joy to watch.

It is so wonderful to watch Steffen do the quality craftsmanship he preforms on this watch. Amazing such precision work done with cobalt steel graver on a lathe to fine cut the pivots. Very impressive and a pleasure to watch. Cudos to you Steffen for the work you do and the wonderful videos you have uploaded here on UA-cam!!!

Enjoy viewing his master skill. Not thinking of replace a broken shaft involves a lot of works and require lots of expensive and precision instruments, experience and skills. Custom made watch really cost a lot!

Hi there. Really interesting work! Certainly excellent at what you do! Love the tool's! ...2 guestion's.....#1 on the jacot tool, are those the original driving belts? they look oversized for the machine? Also, what time frame was that built in? (beautiful tool) #2 on the Lathe ,approx what would be the value on a machine like that?

    Because of your question:
a set of pin gauges... Yes
    mm drawing paper... Yes,
diamond wheel... No, it is a special wheel made of hard metal (carbide)
turning between centres... to the left the staff, its pivoted in a safety insert, to the right the staff point runs in a tiny countersink closely drilled into and at the insert edge. You don‘t prevent breakage by the tools, you have to act / turn cautiously, that's all.
    Regards Steffen Pahlow

What exactly was the purpose of the one graver at 21:04 ? You acted like you where going to start cutting with that one and the switched to hand held graver..?
Thanks for helping me to understand this.

    In reguards to 29:56
Ah I see, so you "turning by centers" by having a pointy end on staff to fit in the counter sink hole on the facing side of the tri-prong tailstock thing. What is the name of that tailstock device? Is it something you made yourself?
The safety insert, I wonder if I could make one for my lathe. I like how it grips the arbor but I guess yet flexable enough to create "turn by centers"..
    Your making me think...!!!

thanx a lot for your videos!!

At 11:19 is that a set of pin guages to measure jewel hole inner diametor..?
At 19:32 is that in mm graph paper, wonder where to get it?
At 24:54 is that a diamond wheel that your blue machine uses? (excellent..!!)
At 29:56 I don't get the tri-prong tailstock thing, I mean I think I get that the pivot rest against it but is there an indentation like a Jacot head? How does it help prevent the pivot from breaking when turning?
    Awsome job..!

  • @douro20

Speed lathe work, which is what is being used here to turn the pivots, requires an exceptionally high amount of skill. However, it is the only good way to hand turn these very small diameters.

Sorry Mr Pahlow, really I could ask you a million questions. But I only have 1 more for now. When I am cutting a staff, I find I have to constantly measure after cutting. I cut a little I measure, I cut a little I measure etc.. But when my work is on the lathe and I dont want to take it down. The best I can do is use venier caliper. I find it very clumsy to reach in an measure with. On this one was simple design. But when you have a normal one, how do you cut-measure etc..?
    Respectfully RJ
