Hello Everyone! Join me as we go back in time and into the life stories of the oldest-known living cowboy on the planet. John Hoiland was born in 1927 and has been a cowboy since day one living on the same land for 95 years. He remembers WWII, the Natives, and has never owned a cell phone. Get some popcorn and sit back to the oldest living stories of cowboy culture in the Western USA.
nice video , at 4:52 I think that is a 1940 mccormick tractor , I tried fixing one before but it was hard to fix , it had 2 fuel intake and I didn't know if its gas or diesel although it was probably diesel , ended up scraping it
Dude I've never been to Montana or Alberta or anywhere west but I would never go hiking without a weapon , wild animals are generally friendly and I've never had a problem with wild animals and I don't hunt , I think hunting should be banned , I think people who sport hunt are chickenshit , but if I'm hiking in some remote mountain I would probably take a weapon , wild animals are unpredictable although wildlife is generally friendly
I love how no matter how much you tried to drag out of this gentleman; he was so simple and content. Anything you want to do before you pass? Just see if the sun rises and sets I suppose. Gold
My great-grandfather (98 on march 19th this year) is still driving, ranching, and walking around just like normal. I asked him one time when the last time he rode a horse was and he said that it was when he was 94 years old.
What an amazing person John is. I can't believe he lives by himself through Montana winters. His only regret in life is not relaxing enough. I think that is why he has made it to 95. God Bless you John.
Yup, gotta keep it going. A lot of people check out shortly after retiring (the ones who make it that far, that is) because they have nothing going on anymore. I'm sure not getting married extended his life some too, haha.
My father passed last year and was born the same year as John. John's mental acuity and physical mobility is amazing for a man his age. Both men were born 15 years after the Titanic sank, were 2 years old when Wyatt Earp died and were born 24 years after the first Wright Bother's flight. They both lived through remarkable times.
RIP to your dad. My grandmothers friend made it to 104 and just passed away this month just after his birthday. How crazy it would have been to live thru everything that’s happened. Born in 1918. Just 10 years after the first ford model T was made - back when the cheapest model was $800 ($18000 today)
Wow, I bet you’ve heard 100’s of stories. I love listening to elderly people talk about their past. I’m blown away by how much they had to do just to survive.
My father was born in 1924 and just passed away last year in 2021 at age 97 . The day he die was the day he drove his pick up truck back to his home in West Allis in Wisconsin from Ho Chunk Casino in near central area of Wisconsin . He drove his pick up truck there almost once a week in his 90’s . He’s Cantonese of Italian descent. RIP papa .

John is amazing. My Grandparents went to Montana in the early 20s. It was rough. The air was bad due to mining of metals. The first two children got very ill, breathing that bad air. It still seems to be the wild west to me. I have an old photo, with my Grandfather sitting on his horse, somewhere out there in 1918 or so. Great video!
He’s amazing for his age. That lifestyle has kept him strong and mentally sound. I know a 81 year old cowboy who ropes when they do the branding. He wakes up at daylight about 5:00 am to still work the ranch.

I had the pleasure of meeting quite a few men and women cow pokes of a similar age with my grandparents at their hand-built cabin on their ranch in Eastern Idaho. We were all of Norwegian descent. The work ethic was incredible. I'm blessed to have had such strong mentors.
My husband's grandma is going to be 101 in December, her hearing and eyesight isnt doing well but her mind is sharp as a tac. We live in rural west central Iowa and she still lives in the farm where she raised all 10 of her children. It's absolutely amazing to think of all the changes she's seen in the world. I always think of how many miles her legs have put on. Her family also farmed with horses for many many years. She actually lived through the dust bowl in Nebraska and then moved to Iowa. It's pretty amazing. She's got 10 kids, 35 great grand children and almost 80 great great grand children. What a legacy this woman will leave. Thanks Peter for always having wonderful content!!!
it is insane to me, and shows the lack of depth of today's society that Peter only has 1.2mill subs. This man has the best content on YTY by far. Peter I am so happy I discovered you 1-2yrs ago. Keep it up!
A million subscriptions is nothing to sneeze at, and most UA-camrs would kill to have that high a number, so I don’t know where you’re coming from. SMH
@@chuckw2236 I stated that because I see much worse channels with 2-10million subs, it was a compliment, relax. His content is universally consumable. It isn't niche. He could and will have 5-10+ eventually....

I just recently found your channel and I love your content! This video of this old fella is my favorite so far! I just recently went to Montana on a hunting trip and the folks out there are full of stories and knowledge! This old timer is a jewel and I truly enjoyed his story!
John Hoiland, a legend. Only a few minutes into this, but appreciate all the videos you put out - pure quality. Was hoping you’d meet up with him, watched a documentary on him a year or so ago. Very interesting story.
Peter this is some of your best work . I’m 55 and can count on one hand when tears were brought to my eyes. This makes it two hands . What an amazing video. Thank you for sharing. God bless him and you .
Peter that was unreal! Thank you for giving voice to the elder. Yes so many elders (and not so old) are bored with life just looking to go, to end suffering, that's a nice lesson he's givin, not suffering from loneliness or poverty... It changes the perspective. I appreciate it!
I have known John for 20+ years, he is a character. Great guy. When he was in his 80's he had a Bull that started giving him issues and getting violent, and he got it into the pen, got a couple of ropes on it, and got it stuffed into a trailer and took it to billings all by himself. He is featured pretty heavily in a documentary I did with Robert Osborn about Photography, Bob took the photos on John's wall. ua-cam.com/video/mdty2s_0ayk/v-deo.html
This is one of the best episodes of watch for a while. Great to see somebody that old still independent. You did a great job with this interview. I'm from Australia and really enjoyed this show.
Bless his heart. It's a simple life he's living now, and we'll deserved. He's lucky to have good neighbors to help him along. I'm glad he's able to ramble around his property in his golden years.
I really loved this. He is a national treasure! It seems each generation moves further from the land, and look at the world now! The way he moved reminded me of my 95 year old dad who I miss everyday at some point. This was beautiful. Thanks Peter-
My dad is 100 and this guy is happier and healthier with a sound philosophy. I’m British but he makes me proud just the same. So touching. These are the best videos on UA-cam.
Wow this man is the same age my grandfather would’ve been. It’s amazing to see someone from his generation living a different life. It’s just amazing to show how different life has always been for different people in different places. I mean with modern technology I’m watching a man that lived for over 8 decades at the same time as my own grandfather who never would have seen him. Amazing and rather humbling, thank you.
Very touching to see John making the best out of his life. My wife's grandmother is also born in 1927. She's still with us and she still lives at home in the same house for 65 years now in the country John's accordion was built. Would love to hear John play once again. By the way: what a beautiful landscape!
Thank you. This was your best episode ever. Life is so simple it just doesn’t have to be complicated. The best part is when he said he’d like to see another sunrise and sunset.
What an amazing character, John !! His memory and knowing dates on everything is amazing !!!! His sight , hearing and getting around is so extremely amazing at that age !! And talking about digging his own grave besides his parents. John is very rare and someone needs to truly do a documentary or book on John. He is truly a rare breed and need to be known for sure !!
95 years old equates to somewhere between 34 thousand to 35 thousand days. Thank you for sharing one of them with us John. Wonderful video Peter, peace
"OH I'd still like to see if the sun comes up in the morning and sets in the evening" I appreciate this man! simple and consistent seems to be the recipe... keep it going!
My grandmother was born in 1926 and the stories about her working in the factories making plane propellers at the factories in Youngstown Ohio were amazing to hear..
@@richardmorris7063 I live in Fowler which is the town next to the Airbase in Vienna. My grandparents owned a restaurant in Liberty where the old Arthur Treacher's was a very long time ago before it was Arthur Treacher's and before they had my father and moved to Fowler where they started a farm and built a new house that I now own and live in. But I remember the stories about WW2 from my grandfather and my grandma working in the factories and to hear how people came together for the war was amazing. I'm worried these days that wouldn't happen if there were to be a WW3.
Thank you Peter. Wished you had hugged him at then. Hope you did off camera. Gave me the impression he was expecting a hug. What a treat. Watched the whole video. Always been fascinated by old old people’s stories since I was a kid back where I immigrated from.
Love this man, my mother was born and raised In Ryegate Montana. We went back every summer to see grandma and family there. They were all ranchers had cattle, horses. What's amazing my mother was Norwegian-Swiss as this man is also Norwegian. Love when he says the road is "a beautiful mess" 😂🤣. He talks with common sense = which isn't common anymore 😂
Peter....without a doubt this was one of the most interesting stories to watch. Don't you wonder how many other "John's" there are out there in places off the beaten path?? John Hoiland is obviously a legend in and around Montana....I'm happy you found him and we got to meet him. Thanks for a GREAT video!
Very heart warming and interesting how this man really lives moment to moment but can zip back and forth across time , his history, without a hitch. His only regret was that he moved too fast most of his life. Practical to the core! Really enjoy this content. Thank you for all who have shared. Happy new year!
This is the third documentary of yours I’ve watched, and I’m so impressed. As a child I remember meeting people like these whose stories you are sharing. i loved this! my great uncle just turned 90 this week. he lost his oldest son and laid him to rest this week. hes a retired deputy and plumer and still a life long cattleman to this day. i have been going out to his property once or twice a week this summer helping do what i can to tidy up and do maintenance and sell some of his 60+ years of treasures after living in the same home that long trying to raise enough to pay taxes and pay for my great aunts insulin along the way i ask as many questions as i can to learn about their life. i feel like i owe them a lot after such a long hard life. they are happy giving loving people but after a lifetime of active participation in the community they have a hard time with everything going on in the world today and i dont blame them. john seems like i could spend a year with him and never hear the same story twice. he also seems like my great aunt and uncle having a hard time with a busy changing world.

Wow this has to be one of my favorite ones. He is incredible. Not to mention all of the incredible neighbors who help him out.
it is insane to me, and shows the lack of depth of today's society that Peter only has 1.2mill subs.
@@rh6696 Not to worry, I'm relaxed. I'm all for him reaching a higher subscription base, and more power to him. Besides, UA-cam doesn't monetize based on subscriptions but number of VIEWS, so obviously, subscription numbers are deceiving, but what the hell, I'm rooting for high numbers for your sake.
@@chuckw2236 lol ok buddy
His memory is amazing!!! It's awesome how he's still able to care for himself and Lord bless those who help him!
His simplicity is beautiful. Just looking forward to the sun coming up and going down. And his humor is awesome lol
What a great man!! I’m glad he’s got good neighbors looking after him as well.
One of your best episodes. The words of wisdom we can get from a 95 year old is priceless.
All the classics on that property. gorgeous land, many treasures including this man. great video to capture His Story.
thanks for this story,my mother is 93 years old ,love what you put on
I just recently found your channel and I love your content!
Man so amazing to see a man at 95 being able to recall all these wonderful memories
John is such a badass hes gonna dig his own grave. They dont make men like this anymore.
How would you know?
Peter this is some of your best work . I’m 55 and can count on one hand when tears were brought to my eyes. This makes it two hands . What an amazing video. Thank you for sharing. God bless him and you .
John is a National Treasure. A beautiful "man", He has Forgotten more than most of us know. God Bless him. Hopefully he is doing ok still.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I hope John is still living his best life doing what puts that smile on his face. 🙏
@@SueTay. last I heard he was still kicking.
did the people whose cows died due to the town putting stuff on road, get reimbursed?
My ex wont even breed a violent cow or bull. Off to auction they go.
❤❤❤ so great!
This man is a corker! I could watch him over and over. A living history book, and Peter, you are lucky to have met him.
This is one of the best episodes of watch for a while. Great to see somebody that old still independent. You did a great job with this interview.
I'm from Australia and really enjoyed this show.
I didn’t want this to end…I would love to see the outtakes!
Bless his heart. It's a simple life he's living now, and we'll deserved. He's lucky to have good neighbors to help him along. I'm glad he's able to ramble around his property in his golden years.
❤❤❤
I really loved this. He is a national treasure! It seems each generation moves further from the land, and look at the world now! The way he moved reminded me of my 95 year old dad who I miss everyday at some point. This was beautiful. Thanks Peter-
Knocked it out of the park with this one. The older gentleman is a gem! Great content, well done sir!
My dad is 100 and this guy is happier and healthier with a sound philosophy. I’m British but he makes me proud just the same. So touching. These are the best videos on UA-cam.
Legend. These snippets into these people's lives are phenomenal. This is such important work. Thank you.
He is an inspiration. Too bad about his cows but he survived. Beautiful show.
95 years old equates to somewhere between 34 thousand to 35 thousand days. Thank you for sharing one of them with us John. Wonderful video Peter, peace
Peter, thank you for allowing us to virtually visit all of these wonderful people and glorious landscapes. It makes my heart glad to see them.💗
I can tell how difficult this one was and the respect you showed! Peter you are a legend. Everyone should watch all your experiences!
This makes me sad how he’s alone and stuff but happy he’s still all there and so humble. I only HOPE to live that long.
What a wonderful episode! John has seen SO much. Please respect your elders. They are special.❤
My utmost respect and admiration for this salt of the earth gentleman. God bless America. Thank you Peter. Regards from my farm in South Africa. 🙏👌
My uncle just turned 95 in Canfield Ohio. I was born there.
@@RaspingPompano2 I lived in Liberty till I was 11, that was 68 we moved away. Our house was Girard my school was liberty.Thanks..
@@RaspingPompano2 my mother is still alive @91, she said my uncle worked @ the GF in Youngstown, they made parts for planes during the war too.
@@RaspingPompano2 LOL, I saw Vienna, I thought you were in Austria..Of course you're out by the airport..
Thank you Peter. Wished you had hugged him at then. Hope you did off camera. Gave me the impression he was expecting a hug. What a treat. Watched the whole video. Always been fascinated by old old people’s stories since I was a kid back where I immigrated from.
Bless this old man. He made me think of my grandma who passed at 89. Amazing video Peter as always!
People were so gracious and kind to each other, and took the time to know and help their neighbors. Social interaction is becoming a lost art. I’m subscribing and look forward to watching more of your productions.
95 years-old and sharp as a tack.
A great Soul and model Human.
Thank you, Sir, for your example!
Awesome stuff, he hit the nail on the head when he spoke about the Civil War. The media/ government are doing everything they can to start one.
I think he meant the republicans starting one. He's no right wing.. 🙂
You are correct Sir! The main stream media and and so called Administration are hell bent on starting one
They are the MOST EVIL SCUMM OF THE WORLD!!!
@@varkychan And I think you’re an idiot. It’s pretty clear to see he’s not one of the sheep that plays the two party BS. He’s simply a human living his life.
@@varkychanhe is full of common sense and worked is ass off his whole life, he's no Democrat
Can't get enough of Peter's videos, especially on a Sunday... My day off .. awesome video as always. Keep up the great work Peter
This guy is so sweet and full of knowledge. He's so kind to take the time to share his journey. The best people to talk to are our elders who came before us and share the way they have seasoned through this life. ❤Thank you Peter and Natalia
My mom is 96, fiercely independent. So Much to glean from the generations before us.
i loved this! my great uncle just turned 90 this week. he lost his oldest son and laid him to rest this week. hes a retired deputy and plumer and still a life long cattleman to this day. i have been going out to his property once or twice a week this summer helping do what i can to tidy up and do maintenance and sell some of his 60+ years of treasures after living in the same home that long trying to raise enough to pay taxes and pay for my great aunts insulin along the way i ask as many questions as i can to learn about their life. i feel like i owe them a lot after such a long hard life. they are happy giving loving people but after a lifetime of active participation in the community they have a hard time with everything going on in the world today and i dont blame them. john seems like i could spend a year with him and never hear the same story twice. he also seems like my great aunt and uncle having a hard time with a busy changing world.
Meanwhile all the illegals have everything for free here in NYC and great people like you have to actually “pay” for things like insulin.
Mine just turned 100 this year
An electrician he was moved to Florida some years back. The man is over 4 times older than me and I hope to get to visit him before he goes.
thanks for these videos Peter. The respect you show to everyone doesn’t go unnoticed. - take care from northern Alberta.
was at a party last night talking about soft white underbelly with a friend and then your channel came up naturally. Love your content brother, keep up the wholesome knowledge seeking!
Brother I really enjoyed this one. It was great listening to this 95-year-old beautiful man's history. You can't help but love this old guy. I would love to see him live many more years. Thanks for sharing that.
The moment you said Goodbye and turned away. I literally started crying. Love you John. Thank you sir for always putting up amazing content. I love it, and God bless❤
This was my favorite video so far! I think John an inspiration for having such a positive attitude. Watching this put me in a totally different mood and mindset today. Thank you for posting!
John is such a charming gentleman & such a beautiful outlook on life !
I'm glad you shared his story, Peter. Now the world knows who he is and took a peak into the life he lived. Every person who lives to that age deserves to be honoured. Especially given the century he lived through.
what a beautiful soul it's an honor to spend time with him.....
Loving your videos! John is amazing… God bless him. He never had a wife, but he sure did acquire a collection of vehicles! So interesting to speak to the elderly … so much wisdom and history. My Dad died one week shy of his 91st birthday and I will miss our chats till the day I die.
A truly amazing guy with a great outlook on life!
Pure life in this man. Lovely example for mankind.
