    o&r was originally an model airplane engine company. they used the same engine in a chainsaw, skill saw, generator, and some other things. very interesting business idea but unfortunately it didn't seem to take off. very cool to see one of these engines flying again!

I bet you father is proud. I am curious every time I come to your channel to see what you come up with next. Take care.

    Can we make an ultralight powered by chainsaw engines

    • @Lagggerengineering
      @Lagggerengineering 5 років тому +2

      You would probably want to use something bigger, like a Weed whacker engine or a small motorcycle engine.
      Still doable though, if you cut off unnecessary weight from the engines.
      For example here he kept the flywheel/fan on there, which is unnecessary weight since he already has the propeller on.
      Not sure about the starter, but that could also be taken out and replaced with an electric variant. More convenient and lighter.

    Nice project man. I was wondering, did you use 1 or 2 servos to control the ailerons? How many channels are you running on your receiver?

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  9 років тому +2

      I used only one 9 gram servo per aileron. I am using all 6 channels on my radio system: ailerons, elevator, throttle, rudder, flaps, and a radio controlled relay switch which when on it grounds the ignition and kills the engine.

      +umar zaman The best thing to do is use a caliper to measure precisely what size it is, and if that size is unavailable, buy one that is slightly under size and drill the collet to the correct size.

      MultiChannel™ i have no experience in this whatsoever but i think he may have extended the output shaft with a bolt or something that would allow him to fasten the prop with a nut or something similar.

  • @ProMayvn
    @ProMayvn 8 років тому

    Im making my own chainsaw plane! I have been studying your video for mounting and other information, but I still have 1 question; what servos do you use? ive made plenty of foamies and have plenty of 9g servos but I feel those are gonna be too small, so, Samm, what did you use?

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  8 років тому

      Haha, 9g worked for me! My mounting and throttle control is all very much just thrown together to try and make it work. I did use a standard servo for the elevator, but before that I used 2 9g for safety.

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  9 років тому

      +umar zaman That was one of the challenges with this project, I measured the drive shaft with a caliper and found that nobody made one with that exact size. So what ended up working was I ordered the next size smaller and drilled it out to the perfect size. I used a lathe but some careful power drilling with a bench vise might work too

    amazing transformation of engine onto plane! can you do a video on a plane with a nitro engine?

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  7 років тому +1

      +i Build never had a nitro engine. Though converting a spark ignition engine is as easy as a glow plug and nitro fuel.

    • @maxjones1414
      @maxjones1414 7 років тому

      True. Anyways, it still would be cool if you did. I've been looking on eBay and the prices for used nitro engines are pretty cheap. I've seen nitro engines for $0.99 but I think that they were old engines that didn't run. Still, it would be cool If you did a take apart of one of these engines

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  7 років тому +1

      i Build I love getting super cheap engines and just playing with them. I haven't found a case yet where an engine wont run after a little rebuild. See my "taking apart engine video" it's so fun especially when the engines are so cheap I don't care if I ruin anything

    • @maxjones1414
      @maxjones1414 7 років тому

      Yeah it is fun. I have an old leaf blower engine that has a busted carb. I've seen the engine take apart video and thought it was interesting. The cam shaft gear that runs the valves seemed to be olyptical. Was it? I know a youtube channel called rapmoz which is all about small rc style engines , many of which are fairly old. You should check out his videos because it would be cool if you did engine rebuilds on camera. I would definitely enjoy that.

    Mr Samm, I bumped into your interestingly fun and entertaining videos while looking for information on the "HOW" to build an affordable foamie plane, and get it to....well fly.
    I enjoyed your video, where you got to audit and work on a team... and guess what, when you tossed the foam board in the air, then diagramed why it did not fly......I was hooked.. then Lead acid battery vs high tech LiPo...... pointless, I think Not!!
    fun Samm , and you narrate in a way that captures the fun!!
    salute!!
    P.s. being an old Nitro flyer( crasher ) the chain saw motor video was a "Gas"
    keep up the Funtastic work, Inspirational!!
