I have watched, seen many of your videos. I'm thinking you have been a commercial, flat rate auto mechanic. I can say that I was and I recognise your work ethic
and skill level. Whom ever trained you, or where ever you learned this craft, you are executing it very well. I'm impressed every time I watch your videos Simon. I hope some guys will learn our trade and flourish in their lives. Your level of competence in mechanical work is exceeded in your ability to create, produce, direct and edit videos for You Tube.

I'm having a bit of PTSD, I remember swapping one of these heads in the pit at Mosport to try to get our Chump Car BMW back in the race. Unfortunately our milkshake like oil had doomed us to a DNF. That damn clamp on the back of the head was miserable to access on our car. Great video as usual! Keep up the great work!

hello simon, i love to watch your videos in my free time, i am from argentina, i have a 66 Chevy C10 66, and i am restoring it little by little, but well, here there is not much market for parts for old vehicles, so almost everything i end up making it myself.
i send you my best regards.

About 1991 was the last good year. Ask any old timer who's worked on them for decades.
I wouldn't own a new one if you gave it to me. I'd sell it immediately and buy a nice example 1980s one.

    Dear Mr. Fordman.
👍👌👏 THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for using the right tools and showing how it's done right: A proper valve spring compression clamp, hex tools for loosening and tightening the hose clamps and a rubber hose plus electric drill for grinding in the valves! By the way: I used to make it a little bit different: A tighter fitting rubber hose made hose clamps unnecessary. Therefore I was able to pull on the drill so that no pushing against the valves was necessary (= no harm was ever done to the handle of a screwdriver!) 😁;-)
    2) I absolutely love your non talking videos with no music! No unnecessary distraction, just the pure working sounds/noises. Your filming and editing skills are professional, just like the mechanic/wrenching skills. Congratulations 🎉 !
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all involved life forms (human and cat).
Post Scriptum: Your cats are very cute.
Post Post Scriptum: Cat litter is great for absorbing spilled liquids. Additionally it usually smells good.

When I worked at a machine shop in the late 90’s we did several of those heads. If they was warped severely we would put on the (heater) a burner we made to heat any aluminum before welding or in being warped badly get hot then put in press and put a little pressure on it and leave it till next day. 99 percent of times would be able to repair and resurface with bare minimum taken off. Great job man

Your efforts never fail to keep me captivated. Proper old school spannering and good use of what tools you have. I'm loving your musical hammer and those resonating valve stems ❤. I actually went to my piano to play the tune ( notes, in case you're interested😮, were C BBBBCBBBCB).😂.Seems one of the valve stems refused to join in the melody.
This took me back to my my 6 pot Triumph 2000 days, doing the same as you've just done now. I was a young chap, like you, when I owned the Triumph.😊

Another video that was a pleasure to watch. Great filming angles and the sub titles simply said it all.
I did this job on an old VW Passat many years ago. It was a lot less complicated though! And I remember grinding valves using a stick with a rubber sucker on the end. I wonder how many thousands a garage would have charged to do what you did. Oh, BTW I watched a car vid with music the other day. Awful!

  • @timothysmith3311
    @timothysmith3311 7 годин тому

using the rubber hose while lapping the valves was genius. You should invest in an electric ratchet and a parts washer. Love the videos and the care that goes into the vehicles
p.s. you definitely should have had the head decked but it'll probably be fine. As for the valves you can wiggle them around while sticking half way out of the head to give you some indication of play and valve guide wear. Again will probably be fine.

I use a similar method to grind the seats. However I just chuck the stem right into the drill chuck and use light upward pressure while moving it off the seat occasionally. The rubber hose method... even better. Keeps you from damaging the guide with off angular rotation. I'm going to steal that method, too. Thanks!

Great content/channel. A good reminder that I don't miss looong drama filled intros, the nonstop background music, begs to like/subscribe, and the cussing. It's nice to simply see what you expected to see based on the thumbnail, and to learn something new even w/o an AI narrator-who knew? 👍
