  • Here I show the design I came up with to make your own propane torch! I had been frustrated by how limited the options were for a decent torch, for those of us who don't want to deal with the overhead of specialized gasses, but also need something more powerful than what a handheld propane bottle can provide. So i designed this: It hooks up to a normal 20lb propane tank, and can be run as either an atmospheric Smith's torch, or a forced air Swiss torch. In either form, it has plenty of power for annealing and hard soldering, and should work for brazing with the forced air.

    Over 40 year span I’ve made dozens of burners for myself and other craftsmen.
    But none of them come close to your torch.
    I bought a commercial Torch that uses propane and compressor air supply and it is similar … but it cost $500. It’s actually a little too big for my needs so I’ve been contemplating doing a custom build for myself. If you ever get bored ( not likely) a parts list and simple exploded diagram would be a big help. Nothing fancy…. Pencil on legal pad for screen shot would be tasty :-)
    Great job and thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work!

    Awesome video. I rebuild bicycles and am now looking into frame repair and building. The torch problem has kept me back and my research has finally lead me here. I'll be building a version of your torch to use with my air compressor. I'll be making a video about how it comes along, because that's what I do. Keep up the great work!

      A real torch costs about $11-30 on AliExpress. Don't be stupid and buy one, it is cheaper and you won't die. This thing is as unsafe as can be. Also get flashback arrestors. They are like $3 each.

    I question the use of solder unless it is silver solder for a torch, Wouldn't at least brazing be more appropriate?

    I am surprised this didn't blow up. This thing has no flash back arrestors. In a PREMIX torch that is a bomb waiting to happen. When you turn off the gas and the pressure starts to drop it can crawl right past your penny nozzle and ignite inside your handle. Not even the $5 Chinese torches from Aliexpress are this unsafe and STILL cost less.

      Well we May be seeing the difference between theoretical and practical knowledge here my friend. I've been using it well over a year now with no issues. In the meantime I've had a chance to take apart a few older air/gas torches, and they're constructed in almost exactly the same way. These are torches that have been in use in the jewelry studio I work in for decades, and again, seem to have no issues. I think in reality the gas would need to be at much higher pressure or volume for explosions to be a real concern. Forced air forge burners are constructed in much the same way, and do operate at higher pressure in larger chambers, and on those I have seen a few flashbacks. But even in those, at worst flashbacks give you a hiccup that's essentially harmless.

    • @wildmanofborneo
      @wildmanofborneo Рік тому

      Please explain why you think this would blow up and not just cause a small flash or puff of pressure. The pressure would just escape out the nozzle, wouldn't it?

    Hi, I only used propane for some brazing and sometimes it needs something hotter, I was thinking about those propane-oxygen torches but instead of oxygen use compressed air, do you think it could work?

    • @maxmeier4039
      @maxmeier4039  3 роки тому

      Compressed air + propane will definitely get hot enough for some brazing. In the jewellery studio I work in, I've done plenty of brazing with natural gas and compressed air, wich doesn't get as hot. There's probably a better way to build a torch that would be optimal for it though, I'd like to experiment with it

      @@maxmeier4039 Thanks for your answer. It would be very useful, oxygen is more difficult and expensive to obtain.

    • @garyoverman4393

      It’s common in Europe to use compressed air and propane. I have a commercial unit and it is amazing.
      Oxygen tank will increase heat by a few hundred degrees… but it’s plenty hot enough to melt bronze with a 5 gallon compressor. Just get a quiet compressor because it kicking on while holding the torch always made me jump. My 60 dBa compressor is perfect.

      @@garyoverman4393 Thanks for your advice .... I only do small occurrences where high temperature needs then the compressed air would be perfect.

    Wouldn’t “don’t do something stupid” include building your own homemade blowtorch tip knowing you don’t have any expertise whatsoever on the subject; and further compounding your situation, (while securing your Darwin Award application) you have the most rudimentary understanding of torch physics and engineering.
    Just a thought, but building a torch head is probably more about the equations and math than just putting some pipes together that will eventually work in creating a jet engine style torch that doesn’t turn you into the Red Skull in the first five minute. On a pure DIY standpoint tho, it’s next lvl amazing, well done bro.

      stop being so negative. if it wasn’t for people like him the first torch would’ve never been built and we still wouldn’t have torches.
