- 31 March 2011, ASKO|Schönberg Ensemble and Synergy Vocals, directed by Clark Rundell performed Steve Reichs exuberant masterpiece Tehillim (1981) in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam.
For this piece I designed and programmed a visual acompaniment using the LED-walls of the auditorium. These acoustic walls have a light-installation built in, consisting of two hundred panels or cells, that can be directed to take on any colour and intensity at any moment in time. Using Flash animation video and lighting software Ecue, a synchronous light programme was cued to the music by an operator during the live performance of the piece.
The audience reacted very well to this enhanced performance of the very powerful minimal composition Tehillim.
The concert was part of the Minimal Music Festival 2011
Fantastic. I used to work with this group before I retired from singing and they go from strength to strength.
Perfect marriage of musicians, music and the visual arts! No wonder Amsterdam is so densely settled, no one wants to leave town and risk missing anything.
Wish there were close shots of the musicians. I can appreciate the camera was set to keep the lights part of the performance. Wow really putting the vocalists to work!
the marriage of the visuals and the music at around 31 minutes is incredible
I saw this concert live. One of the most memorable concerts from the time I spent studying in Amsterdam. Beautiful.
I first heard this piece 30 years ago and it's still one of my favorite pieces of music. What a wonderful way to present it--the lighting dances with the music. When I first heard it, I thought, this is what it sounded like 2000 years ago. Congratulations on a wonderful creation.
Great performance, the lights add a lot!
Lyrics (in Hebrew) are a setting of Psalm 19:1-4 (in Christian translations), 34:12-14, 18:25-26 and 150:4-6.
1. "The heavens are telling the glory of God..."
2. "...Depart from evil and do good..."
3. "With the loyal you show yourself loyal..."
4. "...Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!"
I would have flown to Europe from the U.S. JUST to be at this performance. Timeless.
hats off to the player playing that beast of a shaker/maraccas part.
such lucky people in the audience to experience this performance.
A highlight of 20th century music. A piece of incredible beauty. This is one of the best performances ever.
Love this as much as Life itself.
this piece makes me cry sometimes, it's so beautiful.
holy, timeless, pure joy
This work is always so uplifting. "Illuminated" indeed!
I'd never imagined Reich with a light show before. This is very nicely done. Excellent work.
i think it's the bass that makes that moment. so powerful and dramatic.
i love how the sound weaves your senses in with it.
STOCKING STUFFER
Gem-a tray of precious
Rock-familiar some, and some unknown-
Each now “ours + yours” alone-
Yours at birth delicious-

A Christmas sock!
Count on them, my vintage stock!
Incredible piece, incredible performance. I love the sound he gets out of the strings...
My goodness! this couldn't get any better!
stunning.
je suis content de voir que des gens aiment autant sinon plus que moi la musique de Steve Reich
Wooooooooooooow ........... this is a breathtaking performance. I want more .... lol ...
Ongehoord meesterwerk. Reich's masterpiece.
I cannot believe this has only been viewed 4200 times. Sad.
Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ opened in 2005. The Danish architects 3xN designed the acoustic walls of the main concert room in which the LED's are integrated.
I adore this piece, but wouldn't a closeup of the singers work better for us watching on tape? Live, that light show must be exciting; but all I want to see here recorded is the 4 singers in detail.
Just stunning ... wow
They just nailed that thing!
Beautiful performance.
@15:05 ... there's not a single word in the english language to describe how perfect that moment is
Magnifique !
I can only imagine that this what Scriabin pictured the 'Mysterium' being like... ;)
Ted Chaffman TRUE!!!
LOVE IT!!!
Prachtige uitvoering!!
magic !
I can't believe this is posted at 360 AH!!!! Where's the 1080???
Why feel people the urge to "enhance" everything in their life? Is it impossible today to just, you know, listen to the music?
A wonderful live performance of a great and lovely piece; kudos to the performers. [The visuals are/were between utterly extraneous to badly distracting.]
brillante!!!!
Adonai!

The heavens declare the glory of God,
the sky tells of his handiwork.
Day to day pours forth speech,
night to night reveals knowledge.
Without speech and without words,
Nevertheless their voice is heard.
Their sound goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.
~ Psalm 19:2-5
13:08 Part II
Mi-ha-ish hey-chah-faytz chah-yim,
Oh-hávv vah-mim li-róte tov?

Who is the man that desires life,
and loves days to see good?
Guard your tongue from evil,
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn from evil and do good,
Seek peace and pursue it.
~ Psalm 34:12-14

With the merciful You are merciful,
with the upright You are upright.
With the pure You are pure,
but with the crooked You are cunning.

This is the best live performance of this on you tube, is it possible to get a HD video, or something higher quality? Beautiful stuff
espetacular
The singers were brilliant...
I agree! Let them take the next month working part-time at full pay, Rosh Chodesh!
This video is the first performance of this piece I ever encountered and I'm kind stuck on this version, its so good. Any other good performances of this?
the original ECM recording is the best I think
fantastic! But lights start sometimes too late
@SrNutritivo Not true: he gave a talk at Ohio State last month where he praised Schoenberg effusively. He is sharply critical of Schoenberg's (and Adorno's) repudiation of popular & vernacular music, however.
ironic since sound travels slower than light.
What venue is this?
It must be a religious preference, but if I'm going to listen to a mostly percussive and vocal track for 33 minutes, I'll take Rick Wakeman's Jouney To The Center Of The Earth!
*****
Funny... Reich don't like Schomberg :D
what is this?
+Sharl Yu Rolling Stones - It's gonna Rain
+Sharl Yu The piece is called "Tehillim", which is the Hebrew term for "Psalms
I don't like this lighting.
The main act should be the music, not the lighting.
totally underwhelmed..... Sorry.
Inutile, et maladroit. Comme si le spectacle des gens qui jouent ça n'était pas suffisemment compact.
