This is a very impresive demo SON WU. Excellent. You nail it and demonstrate the incredible power of this TE update. The only “problem” of the OP1 was it size factor compair to it’s incredible creativity…a bit like a violin. If you don’t know how to play it, you can’t understand it’s value. We are good for the next 10 years of fun, pleasure, and quality with this OP1-field and demo like yours.
Thank you very much! I can understand that some people get frustrated with it, because of the limitations. But that doesn't mean it's a bad instrument....just not meant for them. Don't buy a kick drum, if you want a guitar sound :)
Just came back to this vid and it makes so much more sense now after after a couple of years with my op-1 filed. The update allowing the splitting of 4 stereo tracks into 8 mono ones totally passed me by. So glad I re watched this!
Most definitely. The OP-1 original had a great update cycle just most people missed it because they didn’t find out about the device until after 2016. But those first 5 years had new effects and synth engines added yearly.
Your videos are amazing man!! 👏 I can't thank you enough. Please keep up the great work. I definitely want a private lesson soon too. That's too cool that you do that.
Great video and a really good update. I still love my OG OP -1 and have had the OP-1 Field for 2 weeks and love that too. My top 2 upgrade wishes would be the ability to save multiple Endless Sequencer patterns as I would like to reuse sequences when I hook it up to my MIDI setup (iMac running Reason 12 and Live) and my 2nd wish is to be able to back-up straight to USB C memory stick rather than having to back up to a Mac or PC. Thanks for the video 👍
Imagine how amazing that would be if they could somehow implement a virtual pitch bend wheel via the accelerometers. We could juste slide our left index on the left side of the OP-1F and that would be registered as a pitch bend (kinda like on the OP-Z but with a sliding motion instead of pushing). I think that would be more convenient than using the shift button and having to move the OP-1 in the space. I don’t know if it’s a good idea or even if it’s possible but I requested the feature on TE’s support page !
Off topic, but I‘m desperate :D - changing patterns or muting tracks on opz via midi does only work on a „per project basis“ for me. Meaning: I have to hardcode the project into the button when changing patterns, which would require a total of 160 buttons- please tell me I‘m missing something here and you can set it up to have only 16 buttons for all projects for changing patterns!
Can’t you just record into a sequencer? To me that’s the biggest benefit. The recording is on step because it’s step based and you can record numerous melodies into each finger sequencer and then just play them in your desired order onto the tape.
Is the action the same on the OP-1 Field the same as the old OP-1? Because the keys are more of a toggle, where at a point after pushing a key, it's all or none, almost like a click, but not quite. So I wonder how sensitive the velocity sensitive keys are.
The keys aren’t actually velocity-sensitive, the device uses the accelerometer inside it to detect the force which the keys are struck with, similar to how smartphones detect velocity.
Great update indeed! Good work from you too! Wanted to ask you about usb audio from op-z to the field, didn’t you get that to work? Thought I saw it in one of your videos but can’t remember which one. Thanks
would you recommend getting the OP-1/OP-1/OP-Z I am relatively new to synth however i have been making music for some time - i am looking for a device that can make music on the go? pretty sure all of these do this tho .. thanks
Are you used to classical instruments? If you can play the piano in time, I'd say the OP-1 field would be great...if you want to sequence things, go for the OP-Z. It's hard to say, but I personally would NOT go for the OP-1 "classic"
@@SONWU I love your shorts and these little tips need to be known by everybody! Maybe you can show it real quick but then towords the end include practical examples? Pitched down hihats in reverse for instance.
Hey Son ! Thanks for the update's review. I just received my OP1F and i'm a little desappointed with the quality of my keyboard. A fiew keys are "clicking" occasionnaly when I press them. Have you the same problem with your keyboard or is my product is bad ? Thank you !
@@SONWU Ok so you think that with some time playing with it, it will be ok ? Good to know. Thanks for your work, you deserve more visibility ;) cheers !
OP-1 field should have at least 8-12 channels, quantize, and better integration possibilities with other gear for this price. I wonder if it would be possible to add more channels with a software update??? What are your thoughts??
Quantize would be a huge help. Would get rid of those annoying clicks and pops mostly. I suck ass at playing on time and doing the weird tape start record shortcut
Limitation fosters creativity. No need for feature bloat because this isn't a DAW. Most of us owners also have larger synth studios. If someone is stressing on the money they spent on an OP-1, it's not probably not a wise decision to make the purchase.
I guess they could port it back to the original OP -1 if they are indeed using the accelerometer. But with their recent attitude towards their products, I kind of doubt that.
What sucks is exorbitant price which makes this potentially cool piece of gear out of reach for many. How does Teenage Engineering justify this price when there are so many companies offering value for the money? Think of all the great gear and software I could get for $2000 here in fall 2022.
It's up to each individual to see if it's worth it for them or not. What's sure is, that there is nothing exactly like the OP-1....that's why they can charge what they want.
I mean that's cool and all, but why in the world didn't it ship with velocity sensitivity in the first place? Could you imagine ANY other synth company adding velocity later on? Here's your new DSI Prophet, velocity update coming soon. I own the original OP1 and i appreciate the thing for what it is, but i was like 20 when i got it, and now 10 years on it just seems like absolutely pointless to buy something like this for TWO K, you could do soooo much more with that money compared to the OP1. It was cool at the time, but it seems like little more than a vanity purchase at this point. Velocity update i mean coooome ooooon, am i the crazy one??
For sure, i get that. The OP1 is fun. Just hard to not to get cynical about an "update" like this, since they of course built the thing with velocity, and purposefully add it later for dramatic effect almost.
Oh gee! It’s a free update!!!??? Of course I know it’s a free update. It’s just madness that these swindlers at TE went for the cash grab, pushed out a product that was only slightly better than the original and still didn’t even come with velocity sensitivity at $2000. Damn the lipstick on the pig sure is sexy.

This is the best update! I mean it also leads me to believe they will give us more in the future.
I think so too!
TE gave the OP-1 audio interface mode 10 years after release. So yep

You can reset the pan to its center position by shift + click the orange encoder
Have a great day
Thanks!
I realized that too...after filming :)

WHOOP WHOOP! Now the OP1 Field has everything!

thank you so much for this video!
No worries!
This was an average purchase at first, now I’m loving my decision holy heck
Pleasant surprises are always nice!
This is really cool. I love this machine.
Same here...now I am hoping for some sequencer improvements. But either way, so much fun!
That.... that's impressive as hell!
Very good day for us Son wu
great! thanks sir!
My pleasure!
Thanks for the tips :)
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
Woah they're really teasing me I'd prob buy a op1f if I could get it for below 1.5k op1f just feels much simpler working for advanced stuff
maybe it'll drop some day...who knows?!
@@SONWU I'm hoping for a used one to come onto ebay
I've managed to bag one 😍
Sounds like the start of "Beat It" by MJ
How did the tape speed external sync change with this update? Did the sync not work properly before?
Gotta investigate further…I didn’t have any sync issues before

This velocity update has alot more bite than I thought.
Yes, especially when utilizing the velocity LFO!

Yeah, the OP-1 field functions as USB-audio host....and the OP-Z as an interface, so you can hook them up.

It a tape recorder. It’s audio. If you want Quantize then use the step recorder.
I don't think it will be done...the interface is built around 4 tracks. But, never say never.
